Questions and Ideas, post here. No spamming. I hate people who spam.

Sum What if we expanded the 'racism' further, into religion? There are a lot of ignorant people who look down on other religions, or just religion in general.

Definitely agree with that. There are a lot of people who discriminate against religious people because of prejudice/bias.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) It was strange - I had a fight with a friend of mine when he offhandedly commented that Romanians were all basically thieves and immoral, all because the shop he worked in got looted ONCE by a "gypsy-looking" lady a few months ago...

I accused him of being a racist himself for making such a sweeping generalisation on the whole Romanian population....and then he accused ME of being racist for calling HIM a racist...because he was white, and felt that everyone thought of white people as racist...so basically, he used his own logic against himself, but when I tried to explain this to him, he refused to listen.

Phew! It was just going round and round - but what controversially themed conversations aren't, right?

;)

He IS being a racist, and you were just pointing it out, lol. Why did he freak out?

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) He freaked out because he couldn't handle the truth...that's the thing about racists, isn't it? Most times they don't realise that their thoughts aren't "normal" - they think that everyone thinks like them secretly, but are too afraid to admit it.

AND then there are those racists who justify their opinions by saying it's the "truth" somwehow!

Which makes no sense whatsoever...

But *smiles nervously*, I'm still friends with the guy...sorry!

It's okay, unfortunately everyone has prejudice in them at least a little.

We learned all about this in sociology. Unfortunately, I found out I was mildly prejudicial and I didn't like it.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Yay, I do Sociology, too! That subject is FTW, man!

And you're right; Soc taught me some stuff about myself I didn't like either.. but isn't that the best type of education?? learning what you're made up of? Which, I guess, is why I'm going to (hopefully) study it in university...

I can't wait to learn damning stuff about myself some more!

:)

I love finding out that I'm a sociopathic crazy with gothic issues. Jk.

Sociology and Psychology for the WIN!

HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I love the Freudian symbol part.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I specifically put No Spamming for a reason.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

D'ya think we could put up a topic about how to deal with bullying/racism/discrimination? And how to help friends out with this?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm. Good idea.

message 14: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ So, I saw that we're going to do group reads and stuff. Is there a topic for book suggestions yet? I mean, we'd read books about racism/sexism right?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, there is. We have a poll up, choosing which book we should read for January to how long we want to take to read the book. :P There is also a folder called book and you can go there. :D

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait, what are you trying to say? Are you asking a question?

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Wait, what? Elanna, why would you think something like THAT?? What's the problem with inter-ethnic relationships?

Andromeda (Jenna) (hufflepuffsheirloveslee) | 8 comments With out interracial relationships, by best real-life friend wouldn't have been born!

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Jenna - that's a fabulous way to put the comment into perspective. Now you've said that...I can list all my mixed-race friends too. Wow, I can't imagine my life if some of THEM hadn't been born, either!

Inter-racial marriages FOR THE WIN!

message 20: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ Elanna wrote: "I think the worst and don't get me wrong is when peoplede have well get married interatinal"

Well, "don't get me wrong" but I don't think your point of view makes much sense. How are interracial relationships "annoying and stupid"? You do realize this group is for people against discrimination, right? :P

message 21: by E.J., The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 606 comments Mod
People please stop for a second and let me explain Elanna's thing. I think she's against people who hate mixed ethnic marriages. I don't know if she's texting or if she's typing wrong, but i don't think she'd join this group if she was racist.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

What's wrong with inter-racial marriages? It's perfectly normal. This isn't the Civil War, this is the 21st Century. Think of all the wonderful people who wouldn't have been born.

And you think that skin coloring should stop people who are in love with each other?

message 23: by E.J., The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 606 comments Mod
Once again, I think it was a typo.

message 24: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ EJ Luv Zombie wrote: "Once again, I think it was a typo."

I was wondering that, but I can't really tell. I mean she did say "don't get me wrong" like she was going to say something offensive... but I don't know, maybe she'll come back and explain. I'm confused.

message 25: by E.J., The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 606 comments Mod
The reason I think its a typo is by looking at the words and how they're put up there. They don't form a coherent sentence so they might be new to English or they might be texting or being interrupted a lot. Example of her sentence is repeated below.

I think the worst and don't get me wrong is when peoplede have well get married interatinal

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Yes, EJ, but then she also says:

"I think its really annoying and think black and white marriage is.stupid"

Sure we can give her the benefit of doubt, but until/unless she comes back on here and explains her comments, I'll stick with my original assumptions..

message 27: by E.J., The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 606 comments Mod
Before that she also says this:
No i was trying to explain but i couldn't. Verywell people think its weir w

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, but if what people say turns out to be true, then I apologize for this. It would be completely uncalled for and she WILL be kicked out. Racism is not tolerated here or in any groups I'm mod in.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

It could be either. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) But then...why would she join a group like this if she then spouts trash like that??

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay guys, no spamming.... THanks. :D Take this into chat please.

Claudia Patrício (iseul) | 1 comments Guys, a question, 'cause I'm knew. If one has a story to share, about discrimination/homophobia/racism and etc, where should he/she post it?

thank you so much for the invitation! =D

message 32: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 403 comments There´s a thread called "personal stories". Just post it there. :)

~❤Rikka❤~ *living is just a symptom of dying* | 70 comments I didn't know where else to put this so I thought I might as well ask here...
What's a 'tranny'?

message 35: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) It's what they call elderly women who hang out at train stations taking down numbers and makes of trains in their note books as a hobby:p

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, it's a girl... Err. With a male's genital. Tranny stands for Transgendered.

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Actually Rikka, I didn't lie, I just took creative liberties with a definition, ( Tranny= Train-spotting granny:p) but the mundane version, which is true, is what Streak said:p

He did not lie:
He told a terminological inexactitude or a tactical misrepresentation.

Still, if she doesn't know.. Don't lead her wwith false answers.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) It was just a joke! :D It's fine!
(Well, it's fine for me, but then again, I'm not the one being picked on, am I? So I guess I'm gonna have to scold Woolfie (even though he's older than me).
Tsk, tsk, Woolfie. You used to be a teacher; you should know not to make fun of someone's naivety. Tsk, tsk.

:D

(It felt empoweringly good to scold an older, wiser person)

message 49: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Streak it wasn't an answer, not even a false one, but I take your point:p

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, well that's over then. Let no more be said on this topic before feelings start being bruised.
