I nominate "Adventures in the Orgasmatron."

Adventures

I'm hoping that we can read something (non-fiction) about sex, money, or drugs.

I recall two good suggestions from previous book advocacy threads that I'd like to remind the group about too. And, since they're about science I'll just assume there's lot's of sex, money and drugs in them. :)

--The best science writing of XXXX (year)
--Guns, Germs & Steel

I have a palpable sense that this has become a 4-person club: Adam, Gina, Mark, and I.

So if Mark and Gina could suggest a few books, maybe we can move on to the poll stage.

If anyone else is out there, by all means give us a holler!

I'm still lurking, I simply haven't had the money/time/energy/wherewithal to keep up with the last couple.

I'm for The Best Science Writing, or else the NPR philosophy bites book.

Philosophy bites? Sounds intriguing!

Wait a sec here: the Burroughs book was available online for FREE!!!!

I can't read for extended periods online. It hurts my eyes.

Williwaw | 194 comments Mod
Fair enough. I don't think I could do it, either. Not only would I experience eye fatigue, but also spine fatigue.

Maybe we have enough suggestions for a poll now:

Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations"

Diamond's "Guns, Germs & Steel"

Orgasmatron

Best Science Writing

Philosophy Bites (Gina: what the title, please?)

Any other suggestions?

My votes, in order:
1.) Guns, Germs & Steel: already read it, but I'd read it again
2.) Best Science Writing: woo science
3.) Philosophy Bites Book: will make for good conversation at book club!

Hey, what's the deal, Adam? You left the sexiest books off your list!

message 13: by Williwaw (new)

Williwaw | 194 comments Mod
Wait, I know the answer! Your life is plenty sexy already, so you needed a little variety.

message 14: by Adam (new)

Adam | 115 comments Mod
Orrrr, maybe I find Guns, Germs, Steel, Science and Philosophy sexy :)

Wait, wait wait!!!! We could kill two birds with Jared Diamond's book "Collapse"!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse...

I change all of my votes to that one!

message 16: by Gina (new)

Gina Sirois (gina_sirois) | 63 comments Mod
I vote suddenly and capriciously for Collapse!!

message 17: by Gina (new)

Gina Sirois (gina_sirois) | 63 comments Mod
although Orgasmatron sounds good too..

Williwaw | 194 comments Mod
I could go for Collapse. I don't think that Orgasmatron could survive the poll. (But Gina, you and I could sneak read it behind everyone else's back!)

Williwaw wrote: "I could go for Collapse. I don't think that Orgasmatron could survive the poll. (But Gina, you and I could sneak read it behind everyone else's back!)" The worst thing that happened today: my wife happened to walk by and stick her nose into my business as I was typing this!

Uh oh! Salacious Controversy strikes Boulder book club AGAIN. When will we learn?!

No worries though, I won't have time for any subversive sexy extra reading once school starts (soon).

(Le SIGH.)

SCHOOL!!!! Gina, I thought that you were a professional engineer who needed no further schooling except for what you learn from the Boulder Book Club. What are you doing, going back for a "Phud" in physics, like Adam? My brother has one of those, and look where it got him! He teaches physics to nursing students in Wisconsin who don't have trigonometry!

I'm thinking that we should read "Collapse." Adam, Gina, and I have all endorsed it. Mark and Mitch have made it clear that this is a subject that is of high interest to them.

Any objections? Shall we make it official w/o need for formal polling? It's holiday time, so I'm hoping that most everyone will have extra time to dive into a challenging book like "Collapse."

Ohhh, sweet gig! Think he can get me a job? :)

Adam wrote: "Ohhh, sweet gig! Think he can get me a job? :)" Damn it, I was thinking that you could get HIM a better job! He was hired at the eleventh hour, and he gave me the impression that the state universities in WI are desperate for science teachers. It may or may not be true.

I *am* all growed up and with a good job, but I'm going back for a degree in MCDB (microbiology). Why is a great mystery. A fit of pique? Ate something funny?

[whist] Oh, to know why we do the things we do.. [/whist]

grr, on with the poll already!
Or not.
It's totally fine if the book club never reads a book. This ceaseless wandering gives me more time to brew, exercise, surf, rant, whathaveyou.

Also alas, poor Ben: "Aieeee, my eyeeeeees!!1"

We could always change the name to "The Boulder Salacious Chat Club."

If we're changing the name, I request the use of the word "kerfuffle" in our nomenclature.
