Jim Maher | 19 comments Hi everyone,
I have just started a review blog for books for boys, called http://booksforboyos.wordpress.com/. I am going to review anything and everything sent my way, and the reviews will be posted when they're done.

If anyone would like to swap reviews, I'd be happy to offer up copies of my books.

Thanks!

Shawn Davis (shawndavis) | 11 comments AWESOME! It is harder to find books for my son than for my daughters. Part of that is his age: what do 9 year old boys want to read? But another part of it is that I'm tired of the endless parade of books with titles like, "The Day My Butt Went Psycho." Which is okay once or twice, but they all seem to be like that...

I'll be reading to get more ideas for him.

Shawn, for a 9 year old I HIGHLY recommend Pseudonymous Bosch's books.

And Jim, I think those books would be excellent for your blog, if you're ever out of things to review. :)

Alan (coachmt) | 5 comments Mine might be a bit old for a 9-year old. They are about an eighth grade class that gets sent to another world and transformed into different creatures/beings after they arrive.
A Measure of Disorder (Mother-Earth, #1) by Alan Tucker A Cure for Chaos (Mother-Earth, #2) by Alan Tucker
The third book, Mother's Heart, will be coming in January or February. There's lots of action and adventure, very little romance. Great for boys (and lots of girls too!)

Jim, I'll be sure to check out your blog!

Thanks, Shawn. That's the idea. I definitely think there's a place for books about psychotic posteriors, but I wasn't that kid growing up, and I'm sure there are others like me out there now. The blog is for those kids, and people looking for books for those kids.
Jim

Might just have to check those out, thanks, Sarah.

Awesome, Alan, they sound exciting. I'm thinking of an age range between 8-12, maybe a bit older. Not sure yet, early days. Your books would probably be just fine. Thanks for sharing!

I will try those! My son is a grade ahead in school and has a high reading comprehension. We're reading The Eye of the World out loud together right now (with my girls as well), and my son LOVES it.

Cool! I love middle grade books. If he likes Pseudonymous Bosch's writing style, I'd also recommend Lemony Snicket. Trenton Lee Stewart is good if your son likes mysteries and puzzles. Adam Gidwitz is a bit bloody, but not extremely scary.

I can't wait for my sons to be old enough for books like The Eye of the World and Harry Potter. They're 4, 2, and six months old right now, so a little bit tiny.

I'll check those guys out, too. Right now, I've got a fair number of submissions already, but there will undoubtedly be a time when I'll have to find new material. Thanks, Sarah. Good call.

Awww! They're still the snuggly ages!

We busted through The Bad Beginning and the others as soon as they came out, and my kids STILL re-read them. They are instant classics, I think. I hadn't heard of the other two you mentioned, but I will definitely give them a try. Thank you so much!

I love that series! Pseudonymous Bosch and Adam Gidwitz have writing styles similar to Lemony Snicket's, and Trenton Lee Stewart (who unfortunately does not have the funny narrator, but still manages to make me laugh) has similar characters and element of mystery. All authors are very original, though. :) Happy reading!

And Jim, good luck with the blogging!

Yes, very snuggly. Lots of Dr. Seuss, and my eldest is so into space right now that every book we get out of the library is about the solar system. I'm learning stuff they didn't know when I was a kid. It's great.

Thanks, it's going well so far. I've posted my first review today. Moving onto the next book tonight.

Katharina Gerlach | 7 comments Jim, I had a look at your blog, and suggest you might want to change the subtitle. The "just another wordpress blog" is amateurish which you surely are not (just go to the settings tab in your dashboard).

When you've got time/room for another read, contact me about my historical fantasy (late MG, early YA) "Urchin King" for a review copy. It's a Prince&Pauper like story with a sinister twist and some light fantasy. The setting is well researched medieval Europe, and I remember that most boys loved to play Knight (at least in Europe, can't tell for the US). Feel free to contact me through my Goodreads Author Page (Katharina Gerlach)
