OK this connection business is driving me crazy!!!
First of all I think Tessa will be in the MI because in the COFA magnus thinks

So that's obviously the ID and that's Tessa!! So she's still alive!!
Secondly, I think that Tessa and Jocelyn are related because Jocelyn changed her name to "Fray," right? Maybe she combined her own last name "Fairchild," and her mother's maiden name, "Gray?" Idk...
Speaking of Jocelyn, and Clary, they were definitely related to Charlotte and Henry, but wouldn't their decendants be called branwell?? Maybe Charlotte has a sibling we don't know about?? But Clary has red hair like henry...
I think maybe Cecily and Gabriel end up together because alec looks like will but his name "Lightwood," but cecily looks like will too, right?? hmm...
I also think will was the first herondale to get the star-shaped mark... just a gut feeling, but why would an angel give it to him?? Argh this is making my head hurt...
as for tessa... what the hell is she?! We now know her mom can't have been a shadowhunter... I think her mom may have been part fairie?? After all that fairie at the party, Hyacinth, knew tessa's mother...

this is all driving me crazy... please reply and tell me what you think :)

I read Infernal Devices because Cassandra Clare stated out that the male character in the story is Jace's ancestor, William Herondale. I am a bit ignorant about the other characters. Jace is the one who dragged me into reading 5 books.

I thought Tessa couldn't have children so how could she be related to Clary?
I've been thinking the same thing about Will but I don't know how or why he would find an angel

Hey, I probably cant help one bit, but I may bring a new perspective to this theory...

First of all, Alec's middle name is Gideon, as it states in 'City of Lost Souls',
Sophie + Gideon + appx. 150 years = Alec? Maybe so..

2nd, you probably shouldnt be guessing who gets together by looks alone, because of that 150 year gap

3rd, (Im hoping that you've read the book by now, but if you havent, these are only minor details which dont really matter to the plot line) I think that Tessa appears in City of Lost Souls as the 'Female warlock that helped magnus put the protective spells on Clary when she was a baby'...

and Finally, Stephan Herondale's middle name was Will... What a co-in-ki-dink? Meh, I love the series, Hope I helped :D

I think Tessa will have a big part in CoHF as she is probably the female warlock that did the protection spell on Clary but Jocelyn didn't say but I'm assuming because Tessa would know Magnus from 1876

It's kind of irrelevant but when Jace was in the Silent City during COFA, the initials in his cell were that of Jessimine Lovelace, who had carved them as JG, or Jessimine Gray

It is a matter of fact that a warlock can not have children, but Tessa is a different kind of warlock. Even Magnus can not really explain why Tessa bears no mark.

I really want to know who brother Zachariah is! I mean I'm ruling out Will based on the fact that Zachariah says he owes the Herondales, I mean he is a Herondale so..I'm thinking its Jem, like most people, or even possibly Gabriel maybe?

and if theres a family tree, it will solve all our problems!! a long time to wait for it though :/

Ok I think Jem is brother Zachariah. Why? Because in CA Tessa said, "It hardly seems worth living a long time if you're going to look like that." about brother Enoch. Then Jem said," I suppose it depends on what you're living for." so Jem right. Plus brother Enoch knows some things and might be a vitle person cause he is still around in the COLS book right he might have some vary interesting parts to play.

I think that it is somewhat obvious that Brother Zachariah is either Will or Jem. He says to Maryse that he can understand losing one's family, and both Will and Jem lost their families at a young age. Zachariah speaks of the parabatai ritual with knowledge (Jem and Will were parabatai). He says that he knows what it feels like to love someone more than anything else, and both Jem and Will were completely in love with Tessa. He is also very interested in Jace's welfare, and only refers to him as Jace Herondale, even though he was adopted by the Lightwoods and goes by Jace Lightwood. In the end of CoLS, Zachariah says that he knows a lot about the Herondales, also, that he loved two people in his life before the Brotherhood. Why does everyone think it is Jem and not Will? It is also mentioned that Brother Zachariah has dark hair (like Will).

Also, not that this is related to anything that I just said, but Tessa's clockwork angel is displayed in the NY Institute (CoLS).

Because of this snippet, I don't think that Will does go on. I think he lives and, maybe, just maybe, he was reincarnated as Jace? It would be kind of interesting. Just a little theory I have. :) What do you think?

from a snippet recently released between Tessa and Jem. Tessa asks Jem would joins the brotherhood take away his illness and he said he can't become a silent brother so I think it's will but I hope Cassandra Clare is just messing with us and it has no relation to either of them!

brother Zachariah is Jem! It says so in clockwork princess. also I never noticed before but Charlotte uses an electrum gold whip, like Isabelle's. Also, Isabelle's pendant was Magnus' but then he gave it to will who gave it to Cecily which is leading me to believe that Gabriel and Cecily get married. oh and SPOILER ALERT Sophie and Gideon get married so that could be connected too. Also, Alonysius Starweather is Tessa's great-grandfather, her mother was a shadowhunter who was never Marked and her father was a demon.

I don't think Jocelyn and Tessa are related. I believe Jocelyn is a descendant of Charlotte and Henry. Charlotte was a Fairchild and since she was the only child to carry on her family name she and Henry gave there children the Fairchild name. And yes Alec is a descendant of Cecily and Gabriel. So I guess that makes Jace and Alec cousins (3rd, 4th cousins...idk) Oh, and Tessa's mom was a Shadow Hunter she just never new it because she was kidnapped by the Fairie people at the Starkweather home. THe Fairie people replaced a unhealthy mundane in the place of Tessa's mom. Tessa's mom then placed in a mundane home and grew up in one so she never new she was a Shadow Hunter. Tessa is part Shadow Hunter and part demon.

(view spoiler)[ Charlotte becomes the Consul, and, assumes her Maiden name which is Fairchild. Therefor, all of her children took her maiden name instead of her married name Branwell. Charlotte and Jocelyn are related. Yes, Jace and Alec also come from the same bloodline(i.e. Cousins). If Jocelyn and Tessa were related in anyway, I think that Cassie would have shown the connection in her family tree. The only connection to Tessa and Jocelyn is Charlotte. I do wonder though, is Tessa somehow protecting Jace? I would hope so, he is her Grandchild. But, judging by the epilogue, I don't know anymore. Lol. I have been totally wrong about Tessa. I think my least favorite person in both of the series is Tessa. She is a selfish person. That is all. (hide spoiler)]

I do think Tessa is somehow protecting Jace :) I think we will see more of her in the 6th book! I can't believe we have to wait until next year....NO FAIR....lol!

I've read the Infernal Devices and I was so happy when I made connections! Jem is brother Zachariah, although he and Tessa are reunited so they might come into the next book of the Mortal instruments! Hopefully to help Magnis Bane, who was also in the Infernal Devices. In the back of Clockwork Princess, there is a family tree of the Cairstairs, Herondales, and Lightwoods. It will tell you all you need to know about who is related to who :)

I wouldn't judge on hair colour, brother zachariah could be Jem cause Jem had DARK hair before it went silver due to the drug!

James+ Cordelia = Owen
Owen+ Lydia = Marcus
Marcus + Imogen= Stephen
Stephen + Celine/Amatis = Jace Herondale/Lightwood


Cecily + Gabriel = Anna,Chris and Alexander
Chris + Grace = Isidore
Isidore + Catia = Andrew
Andre + Phoebe = Robert
Robert +Marys/Annamarie=Alec,Isabelle and MaxLightwood

And ofc Jem is brother Zachariah, CLARY IS NOT RELATED TO TESSA, JACE IS.

So they really are ancestors

My idea is that Jace and the Lightwoods are DISTANT cousins ... since Will and Tessa are his direct great great great great great grandparents ..

Cecily is Will sister and the great great gret great great great grandparents of Alec, Isabelle and Max

With Clary she is releated to Charlotte ..

I haven't read any of the books yet but I'm looking to, I was wondering id I should read the Infernal Devices before The Mortal Instruments, and like how the two are connected. Like is The Infernal Devices a blast from the past, or is it the future, or is it the story from another characters point of view, is there a certain order I should read the two stories in? I've read all the descriptions and they're not helping me at all, and I don't want to get started on one of the series and then have to go back and read the other.

Help and suggestions??

I also wanted to add that church the cat is in later books, So is the ruby pendant like some of you mentioned, and I loved how this book ended so didn't expect that! I also hope that Jem & Tessa will be in the later Mortal Instruments books.

I am rereading The Mortal Instruments and just noticed that after Clary wakes up in the Institute she finds Will playing the piano. Without looking up he asks "Alec, is that you?" Just like Tessa finding Jem playing his violin and asking "Will, is that you?" Wonder what else I'll find this second time around.

I realize this is a few months too late but... read Infernal Devices first!! It's a prequel for goodness sakes! The series is in the past and introduces the "ancestors" of the main families that star in the Mortal Instruments. You'll get a nice introduction into the Shadowhunter world as well. Plus, by reading MI second, it makes any references to the Infernal Devices books that much more special <3 lol

jace is related to tessa and will cos he is their great great great grandkids. isabelles demon necklace was once magnuses. alec has herondale blood. OHNOOO!!!!! jem is b zachariah. charlottes maiden name was fairchild and was used instead of branwell.

Wow... The last book in TMI was epic, I mean seriously people. I spent the whole book looking for tie ins to TID, and OMG; Tessa finally turns up! Brother Zach is Jem (we already knew this from Clockwork Princess anyway) and he became mortal (also knew that) whoop! Jace is a descendent of Will and Tessa. Brother Zach (Jem) and Tessa were the silent brother and warlock that performed the protection spell on Clary when she was younger. 'Fray' is just Fairchild and Gray put together. Tessa joined the spiral labyrinth (because she was upset after Will died) but is now reunited with mortal Jem (who is distantly related to Emma Carstairs who is going to be out main character in the next series!) I think that our favourite characters from both series will be coming into it!

I have read the last book of TMI and found myself having really bad withdrawal symptons.. So I decided to read TID and I couldn't believe how many links there was between the last book and the prequel! I couldn't put the books down! I find myself a massive Herondale fan and I Absalotley love the way Clare represents the characters.. Seriously my love for Jace and Will is actually uncontrollable !! And now I have a whole summer off with nothing to read! So has anyone else read anymore of Clares novels and if so which ones are deffinatly worth reading,??? Also! Any ideas on any other books with similar characters where the male patragonist Absalotley hates himself and need to be fixed ?? If so do recommend !! Plus I can't WAIT for the dark artifacts !!!! Hopefully there will be plenty of appearances from the other books! Including TMI and TID! Do we think it will be just as good ?????lets hope so!! Can not wait !!!!!

clary and Charlotte are related charlotte is clarys ancestor she is her a lot of greats grandmother.

okay so isabelle and alec are the descendants of gideon and sophie or gabriel and cecily lightwood
clary is a fairchild which makes her directly related to charlotte who chose to have her kids named fairchild due to he reposition as consul
jace is the descendant of william herondale
gem does not have any kids but the carstairs are continued by gems uncle

I haven't read the clock work angle but I am guessing that jace is related to will because the way that will sounds like as for Clary she has that power because what happened in the past with brother zackaraya because they spoke of a connection in city of heavenly fire jace and Clary might have more power than they think plus Tessa and zackaraya gave Clary and jace a gift that will help them.

Just a random thought..Cecily and will are siblings and their descendants...jace and Alec are closer than brothers...idk why I thought of this but it's giving me the Feels

Actually, they believed Tessa was a warlock so she couldn't have children, but Mortmain pointed out to her she was able to reproduce so that they could create the perfect race.
