P.S. Stereotyping is assuming you know something about a person because of their color, looks or gender.

Stereotyping, i find that stereotyping is happening ALOT in our society/countries these days, smh, its depressing, coz people can think good/badly of one culture/set of people mostly the latter, they think badly of em, infuriating much, everyone different, no ones the same, well it depends on some things...but yeah

I find it ironic in cases where the stereotype is justified because people act exactly the way they do, and this reiterates the perception and fertilizes the stereotype further. People tend to take stereotype as the 'template' for a culture or community, and base their initial reactions to it, but ignorance should not be an excuse or barrier.

Exactly, people act on how they r perceived by other people, they think that just becoz people think of em that way, that they should be/do the same, but lots of people arent like that, and stereotyping still does occur, for example with cultures, hmm...or the colour of the hair, blondes...theyre dumb, thats how theyre perceived by many in society, coz thats how they were portrayed in the first place

Agreed, but the thing is, stereotyping is not just practiced in ignorance, I myself do not rely on stereotype to shape the people around me, but I cannot get away from the fact, that to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the person, stereotype tends to generally be accurate. And as you say it's very hard, almost impossible to escape association.

yeah it is, and even when u say u dont stereotype, sometimes...u do think it...u end up stereotypin, and then u think twice of what u just thought of that person and dismiss the thought of them being like that

And you're right again, some people now try to be all politically correct(PC) and criticize things said or written previously as 'racist' or 'insensitive.'

Case in point, I'm a fan of Herge's Tin Tin, but the portrayal of native Congolese was very in keeping with Belgian colonialism, but that doesn't make the writer racist:)

And Politically Correct people are the types who call Enid Blyton, who wrote many of the wonderful books I read as a child, racist because of how she portrays her black characters and servants.

I think it's wrong to label people my modern standards, at the time I'm guessing such attitudes were perfectly acceptable, it probably formed part of the cultural fabric of the time.

But I can't really say coz I don't remember her stories that much, and most of what I read tended to be about fairy folk and magical lands:p

Yeah butEnid Blyton also wrote The Famous Five Series, and The Secret Seven, very much a teen series:) The FF have a series on Disney Channel lol, and if I recall them aright they were awfully' English':p

Well the show doesn't go that far into the whole 'Old Boy', 'Chap' 'tally ho, rotten luck' blimey' spirit of the books:p, but the characters sound rather posh, from what little I've seen of it at any rate.

I hate when people stereotype Asians, like they all look the same, all Asian names sound the same, all Asian countries are the same. They're obviously not.

And I so don't look like the little Korean girl in kindergarden, no matter what the people in my class say. I'm Chinese/Japanese. >.<

I hate it. Last year I was a happy person wearing regular stuff and I made this poem about death. People started saying that i was a suicidal freak and stufff... Now some stuff happened over the summer and I started wearing black all the time. and people come right up tp me and ask "Are you goth?" I think its unfair that they just categorize people i different groups. But now what they called me last year is kind of true... but still. And some other people categorize me as "fake" as well. It really gets to me. It just sends me down a darker path. Sterotyping is unfair to everyone.

Maybe it's because I come from a primarily Western background, but I tend to have trouble memorizing Chinese names, not that they look the same, it's just, different.

I know what you mean, and I get confused too, but like Chinese names are usually less syllables than Japanese, etc.

Actually I think I'd prefer the syllables, at least then it's more of a name and not a series of short sounds, but that's just because their names are arranged
different.

Example of his joke; Chinese and Indians are the worst to for a business venture; Indians are always looking for a cheap deal, Chinese can't give them one!:p

Mel; yes his humour isn't for everyone, but I fail to see how it can possibly be offensive, if a stereotype is bad then people can try and change it, but it's very hard since perceptions of people, cultures and races become ingrained as they are the means by which people interpret the world around them.

I rather like Chinatown, especially the one in San Francisco. Their food is very good and I love Chinese art and fabric - Oh Lord, the FABRIC. The brocade - I love it. It might be my Chinese blood, or my love for sewing... but I LOVE BROCADE. IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY.

But yeah, Chinatown is cool. As long as I don't need to learn the language...

Let alone how to write Chinese. I think the language itself is not too difficult (except the speaking in different pitches for words that sound exactly the same otherwise), but all these signs... 50.000 or something, though you have to know 3.000 for daily use.

Did you know there's different words for aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa - it all depends on which side, and then there's a gajillion other nitpicky things like that.

I meant that America will soon be owned by China, but i like your ideas too, lol.

You know, I love languages. Chinese is one if those I want to learn. Maybe there´ll be a course in college. that´d be awesome!
