Reading the book, we see that not every character feels it means the same. Those on the outside, looking in, see the Dauntless as madmen, doing things no sane person would so. Surely, they must not fear anything. Obviously an observation made by those who don't understand, or care for, the rush of endorphins brought on by fear.
But on the inside, what it means to be Dauntless is not much clearer.
There are two schools of thought: On the one hand, you have those who believe that to be Dauntless, to be courageous, you have to be ruthless. You keep attacking when you have the upper-hand, even when your opponent is already down. You never back down, even if you know you can't win, even if you've already lost.
Then you have the more honorable Dauntless who believe that while you shouldn't give up because of fear, it's OK to admit defeat and acknowledge another’s strengths.
Which do you agree with? Or, do you fall somewhere in between?
Also, as another thought: Is self-sacrifice courage? If so, does that mean all Abnegation are also Dauntless? Why or why not?
