Above the comment box, there is a clickable link which says - add book/author. If you click on this, you can do a search for a book then click the add button.

The title is the default option. It will automatically look like this if you choose no other option : The Hunger Games

We usually use the smaller thumbnails for the currently reading topic, but larger images work well in the book covers topic.

Here's the code. Both parts are needed to make it work. The end of the first code should be touching the first part of the next code. It is only showing as two separate codes because it automatically moves the second half of the code to the next line because there isn't enough room.

I have/purchased a copy of a book that does not work with my current device. How can I make it work?

First off, you need to make sure that the book does not have a DRM, which is sort of like an ownership code put on by the company who released the book. In some cases, books with DRMs will work on your machines if they are licensed to you (such as gallies or arcs you've been approved for). In the case of those types of books, you'll need to load them onto your reader through Adobe Digital Editions (a free download you can search on the net) because the books can not be directly sideloaded onto your device unless the galley company sends them directly to your device. In the case of not knowing how to do this, you'd plug in your device to the computer, then open your book into ADE, then drag and drop the icon within ADE from the contents page onto your device icon in ADE.

If your book is DRM-free or multi-format, you can download a free and legal program from the internet called Calibre, which is easy to use (more drag and drop stuff) and it will convert your book from its orginal format to the format which will work with your device.

I have a .rar file that is supposed to be an mp3 audiobook. Does anyone know how I can get the file to convert/revert back to an mp3 for use?

A .rar is an archive folder (like .zip), the mp3 file is inside. You'll need to download WinRar to extract it. It's free. Well, it'll say it's a 30 day trial, but it continues to work forever.

That is what I use for audio mp3 rar files. It is super easy.

I feel so clueless sometimes. It took me a half hour to figure out how to get the archived file out last night (I had 7zip on my computer already), but I got it eventually.

I've asked this before but I keep forgetting to write it down. I need to clear out my ADE again because I'm getting error messages saying that content has expired. It's taking forever to load new books, so I want to get this crap off my program. Can someone (probably Jenny, haha) help me?

Also, if you guys think anything else needs to be added to the original 2 posts, please let me know. I think I covered the basics so far but there could be something I forgot to include.

My Documents > My Digital Editions

From my Nook files? Do I just delete what's in that folder?

When I have to do that, I usually just delete everything in the My Digital Editions folder. I add any books that I need to keep to calibre first to make sure I don't lose them.

There are several places I delete from -- this is what I do. :) Sorry for typos -- three glasses of wine so I keep finding errors in what I typed ...

1. Digital Editions (in the application itself). Or as Jenny said -- My documents > Digital Editions

2. Calibre (in the application itself). or whatever your computer is named (mine is after me) so .. Regina > Calibre Library If you delete while Calibre is up, and your ereader is connected -- it will give you the option to delete from your ereader and your library at the same time.

Weirdly enough, they each store their books in separate folders. So you have to delete from both (if I truly want them gone). If I only want the drm versions gone then I only delete from Adobe.

3. Then, I delete the original downloaded version -- my computer puts it in the Downloaded folder. But my work computer put it in Documents. Sometimes these are saved without names. The reason there is this one - -bc once it is added to Digital Editions and/or Calibre, there is another copy made of it in the computer.

I don't keep anything in Calibre. As soon as I convert, I delete my file.

My downloads is also cleared as soon as I download.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what's going on. I literally went over my ADE and Digital Editions folder and took everything out (this is on my reader I don't use anymore). I took out thumbnails, annotations, everything...and I'm still getting an error when I try to open ADE. It's for one book that's not even on my computer anymore (a DRM'ed copy of Grey Wolf Throne, which I got rid of when I got a non-DRM'ed copy).

I must be missing something but I'm not sure what.

You could try uninstalling ADE and reinstalling maybe.

I uninstalled, deleted the info, re-downloaded and installed...same thing happened when I opened it again. Guess I should have mentioned that before, I suppose.

I'm sure the problem is something obvious that I'm going to feel incredibly idiotic over when I finally figure it out.

I guess I'd uhh..
- double check that downloads folder is empty
- clear out my browser's cache
- run a clean disk: My Computer > right click on C drive > properties > disk cleanup Make sure all the boxes are checked then delete all the files
- reboot pc

How do you put a line through text? Also, how do you bold text? These are things I can't figure out how to do on GR.

For strike through text you do: Text you want a line through but take out the !

Strikethrough!

For bold it's the same, but use b instead of s. Italics and underlining can also be done using i or u. You can even combine them.

Bold and underlined. = Bold and underlined.

I know some of you know all the ins & outs of GoodReads. If you read a book more than once, can you mark both dates, or will it only let you mark one date?

Only one date if it's the same edition. If you mark read a different edition (let's say hardcover vs. paperback), then I think you can pick different dates.

Yep, reviewing a different edition worked. I had to figure out what to click, and when I search the title I only see the original review, but it did what I was hoping it would do. Thanks!

Does anyone know of a program that will open .mobi documents on your computer? I have some files named with abbreviations that I'm trying to sort and can't figure out what they are and I don't want to load them all onto my reader to figure out what's what.

Turns out I didn't need to open anything. I just loaded the book into Calibre and the picture of the cover told me what the book was.

Because sometimes life really is that simple and I have to over-complicate things.

Even though you figured it out, there's also the free Kindle apps from Amazon.

I need some help because I'm freaking out a little bit.

There's a folder that was on my desktop and it's missing now. When I do a desktop search, it's bringing up an item that's showing as :

(icon is folder) Spring & Summer - File Folder - Desktop:C/Users/My Name

But when I click to open it, the message is saying that the location is unavailable. I didn't delete the folder though. So where can I find it?

Errr.. Are you on Windows 7 or Vista or something else?

Usually when I get that error it means that the icon still exists, but the actuall application files have been deleted somehow.

The folder or files could have been moved and now the shortcuts are pointing to the wrong location. Or it could be an issue with the user desktop. Sometimes the user profiles get messed up and show the wrong desktop. If rebooting and checking that you're logged in under the correct user doesn't fix it then there are some things you can try, depending on which OS you're using and assuming that it's something wonky with your user profile.

All of the codes with placeholder symbols have been removed and I posted picture examples in their place so it's easier for people to figure out.

I read ebooks on my computer, on calibre, or transfer them to my sister netbook and read them with CoolReader. But my colection is really poor and I am afraid to download from amazon or B&N, since I am not from US or UK(I think I can't even download since I don't own a kindle, nook or other e-reader). I really want to read what most of my fellow members read, so here's my questions: there is absolutely no possibility for me to get free ebooks? Thank you so much!

You keep asking this question. Here's the thing.

You can get public domain books (read: classics) for free from Project Gutenberg
You can get some self-published books for free on Smashwords. These will be many of the same books that are free on Kindle or Nook (at least, as far as the self-pub ones go).
Baen.com has some of their ebooks available for free.
There are probably a few other sites similar to these, and sometimes there are deals to be found from publishers or various other places.

But if what you want is to download bestsellers and new releases and books from the New York publishers for free, THEN YOU CANNOT LEGALLY DO THAT. If you want to pursue your illegal options, nobody can discuss those here. If that is what you are wanting to do, then you will have to Google it and figure it out for yourself.

ANyone know how to mark someone so they are not a "top" friend? There is someone who I want to keep as a friend, but they post sooo much that on my "newsfeed" type page they are the only person I see. I know when i first friend people there is a check box to make them a "top friend" is there a way to make them NOT a top friend so maybe I don't see everything?

Yep, find them in your friend list and hit 'edit friends' and you can unselect them as a top friend.

Or, you can go to their profile and all the way at the bottom of their profile is a light gray link that says 'remove from top friends'.

The answer to this is probably obvious, but could someone tell me where to find the announcements topic? I've looked through the list, but I don't see it.

Hmmm...that's interesting because I don't see it. I hope it didn't get deleted (although if it did, it would be my fault and not the other mods, since I'm the one who tends to get in happy cleanout mode). It would be a pain having to redo everything in there.

Speaking of a pain, I notice my photobucket picture examples are broken again. I guess it's time to redo them all and move them over to imgur tomorrow.

When I'm working on redoing the broken links in post 1, I'll search around for the announcements topic. Maybe it got mistakenly moved to another folder.

Post 1 has been fixed and I moved all of my pictures to a new account. If you're not sure how to make a spoiler tag, bold your text, post a picture, etc. then post 1 will be able to help you out.

Is there a way to view spoilers from the (Android) mobile GR app. Tapping on "spoilers removed" seams logical but nothing happens, well, other than me tapping my phone like a crazy person.

I really don't know because I only browse GR from either my computer or Nook (and I use a web page, not the app on there).

Hopefully someone else will be able to help out. If not, you might want to check the Goodreads feedback group and do a search for topics on the GR app. There's a chance someone's made a post on the topic.

OK apparently I have been bouncing and cannot get group e mail until I update or confirm my e mail address. I went in there and did that 3 times and still it has not updated. I still get the message that on May 4th I bounced and need to confirm or update. Does anyone know how to do this? The link they give me to click on takes me there but it is not actually updating or confirming and I am still not getting group e mail. I cannot even find a Goodreads help area to ask them.
