A Thousand Acres discussion

I thought this book was amazing. The character development is what really blew me away. It is a slower story, but I felt that it was worth it for me. Hopefully you make the right choice for you! In my opinion, if you get 100 pages in and you can hardly stand to turn another page, you should put it away. There is only so much time to read in life. No sense spending it on something you don't really care about. If you feel that way, go out and grab something else. Good luck :)

I enjoy slow books for some reason. This definitely was a slow development leading up to an painful explosion within a family. I thought the movie adaptation was terrible. Jane Smiley is a leading writer in my opinion.

I read this novel back in the early 90s and I thought it was great. I never read anything else by Smiley that I thought was near as good.

Any Jane Smiley book is worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone unfamiliar with her work, even though "Horse Heaven" is my favorite, "A Thousand Acres" probably has broader appeal.
