Jonathan (jonathan1) Hello all!
Has anyone seen the new BBC's adaptation of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. The original novel was published in three volumes, and they have made three hour long episodes for Tuesday 27th to Thursday 29th December.
Seriously though this programme is amazing, and is a must watch for all!
You can catch it on BBC One, or for the majority of goodreads, to our friends across the Atlantic, go on BBC Iplayer on the Internet. You will be glued to the screen! :-)
Happy watching and happy new year!

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Charles Dickens was an amazing writer. He continualy kicked out brilliant novels with social context & sentiment. A very hard thing to do. Not being a series book writer but having to develope whole new characters and stories for each book. The man was amazing and one of the very best writers ever. They just do not make writers in his class anymore.

Jonathan (jonathan1) Wow, two posts! He was an amazing author, one of the best, with fantastic characters (Miss Havisham, Gradgrind, Nancy, etc....).2

I can't wait for the final episode tonight!

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Read Oliver Twist. It is much different than most screen adaptations. Much more true to life & a social statement. The 1982 screen adaptation with George C. Scott as Fagan & Tim Curry as Sikes is probably the best. Next to Oliver Twist I like A Tale of Two Cities. You just can't beat the books themselves.

Jonathan (jonathan1) I got both of those for Christmas! I'm going to start with A Tale of Two Cities first.

Me too! I don't normally enjoy these sort of programs, historical perido drama, but this really surprised me and i hope the ending is kind of happy at least!

Yay loving this thread.. I have been watching it too.. and it has inspired me to do a classic book reading challenge for 2012, or until uni work takes over which it usually does :(.. cant wait for tonight's instalment ,I love Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham.

I watched an adaptation of Oliver Twist I think it was David Lean's Version from 1948 and remember it being having some brutal parts especially towards Nancy. but it was very enjoyable and must I must read the book

Jonathan (jonathan1) Well what a finale! It was amazing how Miss Havisham burned at the end, and how Estella ran to the horse to give thanks!!! :-)

Huw Evans (dochuw) | 140 comments Gillian Anderson was astonishingly good as Miss Haversham, complete with the ticks and tocks of the obsessive persona. It was the sort of thing that the BBC does very well and with Ray Winston as a shoe-in for Magwich should rate with their version of Pride and Prejudice.

Heather (goodreadscomheather-jane) | 84 comments I really loved the finale and i liked how everything wasn't completely tied up and the whole story was really inspiring and weird in a beautiful way. I think the actors were amazing but i thought the actress who played Miss Havisham was a little TOO over the top, but apart from that what a great series!

Jonathan (jonathan1) Next year a new film of great Expectations will be released, with the great Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, Ralph Feinnes as Magwitch, Robbie Coltraine as Jaggers and Davis Walliams as Mr Pumblechook.
Thats Bellatrix Lestrange, Voldemort and Hagrid in a film once more!

I must agree that Miss Havisham played by Gillian Anderson was fantastic, and her pinching the skin on her hand just topped her performance.

Heather (goodreadscomheather-jane) | 84 comments Helena Bonham Carter will make the PERFECT Miss Havisham! She is an amazing actress and is really good at playing unusual and depthful characters. She will be perfect i know :)
