Welcome to the group Sandy! I hope to have the room up and running with all the old books for 2011 updated. I promise to keep the 2012 titles available sooner for each month. Have fun with the topics and glad to have you aboard.

Sandy Thank you! I am excited to be a part of this group. I love to read and I have to read every day. My youngest child just went off to college this fall so I have been sucked into books a lot more to try to avoid the "empty nest" that has been lurking in my house. I live in Cedar Rapids but wished I lived somewhere where it was warmer all year long. You have some great topics going on and I'm trying to decide what my goal for 2012 will be. Quick question: on the discussions tab for the monthly books (Dec, Nov)- I see that you have some books listed. Do you discuss them online too or just in person in your meetings? When I click on the link, it takes me to the review section so I was just wondering if there was a place where anyone discusses the book on this board. Thanks for the warm welcome.

To discuss the monthly books look under the 2011 monthly lists. Each month has it's own room, so just add comments to each month, if they are books you have read. I just made new ones for 2012 - January, February and March -- although March is not finished yet.

Not everyone in the Avoca Book Club reads the titles chosen so sometimes when we do meet we discuss the books we have read lately along with some wine and snacks. I write a weekly column for the newspaper I work for and so I have lots of people who read the titles and don't come to the meetings. There are 3 other book clubs at our library who meet once a month at the library, but my gang likes to meet at my house where we can bring the wine and cheese. :o) I do belong to another book club that meets in Harlan once a month and we have to sign in because its sponsered as one of the non-credit courses thru Iowa Western College in Council Bluffs. I really really like this group and have found myself reading books I would never have thought to pick up alone. So make sure you check out that discussion room for titles to put on your list.

I wish I could live somewhere warmer too all year long!!! I also have to read daily, otherwise I'm cranky. My kids are 11 and 14 and I read as often as I need to which means I miss a lot of sleep. Thank goodness I'm a fast reader too. My kids are readers so sometimes my search for books include looking for titles for them to read. Which is another reason I added the YA books monthly.

Again, welcome aboard my crazy new reading friend

Sandy I read a lot of YA books too since I think I read a lot of books to my kids as they were growing up and I am hooked on them now. They sure have changed a lot over the years and I am enjoying them more. Right now I am a substitute teacher so I get to see what the kids are reading WHICH is bad for me as my reading list gets really long as the kids want me to read the books they are reading or I see something I "just" have to read. I hope to change my profession soon now that my son is in college but my love for YA will always be there. You know it's bad when you wake up at 2 am and have to read because you have to know what's going on in your book- that's a sign of addiction, right? Thanks for your help with the book discussions, I will check it out. Happy New Years!!

I have crazy sleep patterns and sometimes I wake up just to read a bit more of that title I just have to finish....

yep just belly up in the month you choose and add comments. It's that easy to have a book club meeting online. Love it!

I've been reading a lot of YA titles too and of course trying to get my kids to read what I read at their ages. My son has read many of my titles but they were action types so my daughter is not hip on those. I would have killed to have the Harry Potter series when I was in 5,6,7 grade. Or the Rick Riordan ones. I read everything I could on Merlin and the Greek gods I could find. I have young kids asking me about books too. I want kids and teens to read. My son will read during one of his study halls even if he doesn't have his homework done. He will do it at home. He has been going thru a Hunger Games type book frenzy. The Maze Runner he just finished and is waiting for the library to get the next two in the series.

What age do you sub for?

Sandy I sub for kind through 6th. Good YA: Have you read the Life As We Knew It Series by Susan Pfeffer. I heard it was really good and I just got the first one but haven't read it yet. I liked the Cirque De Freak series (I usually don't do vampires but this had a good story line), and Avi's books - Crispin, the Cross of Lead. My sons are readers too - it's great to sit around and talk about books! My daughter is just getting into it.

Good for her!!! The only vamp series I've read is the Twilight and Charlaine Harris. Of both of those only a couple books into the series. I have started a werewolf book and I totally totally love the Evermore series by Alyson Noel

I think that Crispin book might be up my son's alley. I also like the Mediator series by Meg Cabot Shadowland there are 6 books

Yeah my son is patiently waiting for me to finish book 2 and 3 in the Hunger games series. LOL!!! He read the Giver and the 2 books after that. He is into books about war too real and those like his PS3 games.

Sandy The Future of Us by Asher and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter are also good reads too. My favorite book of all time is The Giver- Avi is so good.

I have been meaning to read an adult Vampire book but I just haven't found any strike me without a lot of romance. I want adventure and drama with a vampire (perhaps that is asking too much) :)

Charlaine Harris books are so totally different than the Twilight series.

Everyone knows about the vampires. There are vampire bars. I think in the first page there was the line something like this "Vampires came out of the coffin"

Lots of bad vamps and good ones, some romance but mostly drama and conflict going on too!

Charlaine Harris - Dead Until Dark a mystery series. Also a show on HBO called True Blood
