How Did You Start Reading?
My dad read to me every night when I was little, when I was 4 I learned to read on my own and yeah, just never really stopped <3 My grandparents were always buying us books for gifts so they really pushed for us to enjoy reading :)
Well, I was always read to well before I can remember and I was reading picture books completely on my own by the time I was five. I remember going to the library with my mom and getting to pick out three books of my choice to take home as long as I was good (in addition to the ones she picked out for me). The libary used to seem so big and scary then. When I was about seven I started reading little chapter books, like Nancy Drew, mom says I asked her if there were books with longer stories. I loved the library at school and always got books when we went as a class in addition to the ones from our public libaries. Mom and Dad say I started reading 'real' chapter books (longer ones) when I was about ten and I stopped using the school libary. Mom left me in the children's book section once for a little bit on my own at the huge libary near us (it is my favorite now, three floors of a wide squareish building) and I learned how to browse and figure out what I liked. When I turned fourteen I got my own library card and the fines would be my responsibility if I didn't keep them renewed. I always got books as presents and some of my favorite memories are of reading with my grandmother when I was very little. She had the most beautiful, ornatepop-up books. Now when I go to the libary it isn't uncommon for me to come out with more than 15 books or more :)

My favorite book as a child was The Color Kittens. My mom read it to me so much, I memorized the words that went along with the pictures. Then I started to read it myself, associating what I had memorized with each picture. The words made sense. That's how I started reading. Happy New Year!
My mom bought me this book called The Greedy Rabbit by Enid Blyton when I was young. And I was really hooked and kept on buying the others. When I got too old for Enid Blyton's books, I stopped reading. Then when I was about 9, my mom forced me to read literature books like Jane Eyre, Silas Marner, and The Pearl, which then led me to hate reading.
When I entered high school, I was 12, I read Twilight and I just fell in love with books all over again. Though after reading Twilight when I got older, I thought it was poorly written. But it's still my first YA book, so I have so much respect for it. :)
My mom probably regrets it since she can't control my reading habits now, and is mostly pissed at me for reading paranormal books instead of studying. Since eye sight got bad, my mom got pissed off twice as much. :D

You should definitely read what you like, who knows maybe you will want to branch out of that genre some day.
I forgot to mention that I read at least one book to my baby every night before she goes to bed, she's 9 months old and Ilove how, already, if I leave her be a few minutes she will find one of her books and flip through it, looking at the pages. :) Definitely my daughter :P

The first time I really started to get interested in books was when I read Harry Potter and the Twilight Saga. I loved them both so much that it's made me love books ever since.

I guess she knew I would probably pick them up one day.

Picture books when I was little, Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones when I was about five, and Harry Potter when I was like seven or eight. After HP was when I really started reading like, three hours a day.
When I was in eighth grade, you had to have so many AR points to get a good grade. My mom forced me to read Harry Potter. And thus, my love for reading was born :D

When i was 10 years old i had a BFF who was a braniac and she kept reading books by Jacqueline Wilson and J.K Rowling. I got bored because some of my other braniac friends always had a conversation with my BFF about the books they all read and i felt really left out. That's why i started reading and here i am obsessed with books especially books by Colleen Houck and J.K Rowling!!!!!
well, my mom told me that when i was like, 3 or 4 she picked up a book and showed it to me thinking she would teach me to read before i went to preschool. (the book was Dick and Jane) As soon as she opened it i started to read it. apparently i had taught myself by listening and occasionally reading when my mom wasn't looking! Then i read all the signs as we passed them in the car! Let's just say that i've never remembered a time when i didn't like reading!!
I remember that I used to be read to by my Grandma when I was little. The memory that comes to me is when I was at a used bookstore with my mom and I picked out some goosebumps books to read. Thats when I started to really read alot. Plus my mom loves to read and works in the library so I guess reading is in my genes lol
i more or less taught myself to read a little bit before I turned four, but since my mother made me dedicate an hour to reading books she chose for me after that, for a long time, I dispised reading. But then I figured out that I was a little bit better at it than my older sister and I couldn't get away from it. Reading has always been my sanctuary when life get's hard, and every since I realized all this when I was seven, I never go anywhere without a book.
When I first discovered Dr. Seuss and realized how wonderful reading was I fell in love and have not stopped loving it.Plus to me, reading has always been my escape and when I was young I used to be really shy and kept to myself so I was always hiding behind a book (:
Everyone in my family hates reading so they all find it weird that I enjoy it so much haha

Yes. We don't have middle school in the Philippines. So after graduating elementary at 12, we go to high school. :)
Ju wrote: "When i was 10 years old i had a BFF who was a braniac and she kept reading books by Jacqueline Wilson and J.K Rowling. Because they made it fun when at that time reading was frowned upon and I wasn't really good at it. It was with Harry Potter too. I had a sort of reading slump when I was thirteen, after reading all the Harry Potter books and most of the things at the school library. Then I found His Dark Materials after a friend coaxed me into reading it (I had stared at the covers long enough) and then I really started looking for more fantasy and other genres and joining in on forumboards like this.
i started reading in 6th grade...mostly becasue of how my 4-5th grade year went.people realy dont realize how mean 10 year olds can be.those kids came at me with every thing they could think of...and becasue i had no backbone i did nothing about it.then over the summer something WONDERFUL happend,i found A Wind in the Door.my copy was beat down, kinda smelly, stained, and the most beautiful thing i ever seen...at the time i was realy depressed(later that would become suicidal)so that book was like this rainbow after months of rain.it told me a story that is still one of the strongest in my mind years later!
I have been a reader for as long as I can remember. During summer vacations my mom always made me and my sister read 2 books (one of out choice and one a biography) and turn in book reports. we also traveled a lot since my dad was in the military and everytime we would visit a new place my mom would find books about the place so it would mean more to us. To this day me and my mom socialize around books, we usually take 2-4 trips a year to differene book festivals.
Our Library has summer reading programs every year for kids. They have a theme (Pirate Treasure Hunt, Dino Dig etc.)You are supposed to read 10 books of any length in July or August to advance through the theme and you get sticker and such along the way. That is how I started reading. Just small books at first like Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. Then one of my student teachers introduced me to Pippy Longstockings and I've never looked back :) Now I read a few books every week.

They were encouragement to try something new for me.
I come from a family of readers. It's in the genes pretty darn deep! I was even named after a character in a fantasy novel.

When I was a tiny person I read lots of Roahl Dahl. Eventually I started reading larger Roahl Dahl texts- from fantastic mr fox to the witches etc. after that I just kept reading! I definitely read even more since i joined goodreads oddly enough :o)
bookowl wrote: "When I was a tiny person I read lots of Roahl Dahl. Eventually I started reading larger Roahl Dahl texts- from fantastic mr fox to the witches etc. after that I just kept reading! I definitely read..."Yup! Definetly The Chocolate Factory!
I started reading when my Mom read to me! I I started reading in preschool when I read "T'was the Night Before Christmas" I still have that book. Anyway, I just kept on reading and reading and here I am now, reading 500 page books and classics like currently I am readcing "The Secret Garden" I love to read now. Thanks Mom!
Well I went to private school until I was in sixth grade and we did not have a library at the school and my family did not read so I was not really exposed to it but when I transferred to public school in seventh grade I was put in advanced classes and my English teacher is the one who urged me to check out their library and I have been in love with reading ever since.
I always read books when I was a kid but I didn't become an avid reader until middle school. I moved to a new school in a different state so I didn't make any friends. I read books to pass the time. I join a book club in high school so now I read all the time.
I had an aversion of books when I was young (about 10). However, when I was in year 5 or 6, I borrowed 'The Key to Rondo' from the library for my Premier Reading Challenge at my School (it is an Australian thing) and I read it. I got hooked from the first page. So from then on, my love for books grow stronger and stronger.
I'm dsylectic (hoped I spelled that right). My mother made me memorize prayers and I found them in the prayer book, I think. I know I read before I went to school.
My mom always used to take me to the library when I was little! I always got Dr. Seuss! When I was a little bit older I started Harry Potter, and A Series of Unfortunate Events! When Narnia came out in theaters I became obsessed with the series!
I always liked reading but last year I started also reading in english and italian... My first real english book was the Hunger Games and I still love it!
Well, this is kind of a curious story because I am not sure when my love of reading started. One thing is certain - pratically no one in my family loves to read.
Reading was always a part of me but Harry Potter was the book that really made me love doing it more.
My mom forced me to read my first book. Like at ...... 3 i think... or 4. She made me read to her. it had like 37 pages or 30-something.... well that's how i started.
My sisters taught me to read when I was in Kindergarten with
. After that, I was constantly reading.
One summer I was at home and really bored. My best friend gave me the twilight books series and said they were really good so I pick up the book could not put it down. It took me 5 days to read the 4 books she gave me. Since then I have been looking for some really good books out there. There is so many books so little time LOL... I never really read much but at school. Since my best friend open my eye to books. I love to read now and enjoy reading when I have the time even if I have to make time. I like to read a little bit of everything. I am still reading and I love it.
my school awards the students books, if they do anything good...instead of trophies....so well i had to read them, and then i got hooked....
Scott wrote: "Twilight and Harry Potter influenced many people to read!"No kidding. Funny thing is they are completly opposite too, well maybe that makes sense because it would catch a wider spectrum of readers.

For Me: I started to read when my mom took me to my bookstore and told me to pick anything that caught my eye. Obviously, I picked everything that looked interesting. From there, I loved reading! Around 12 my mom get me into Twilight and I loved it even more!
I'm always reading and most of my family love reading! :)
