I had seen the movie when it first came out, and it was pretty intense, so I am curious to see how it compares to the book!

"Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920's, it is the story of the beautiful but love-starved Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to accompany him to the heart of cholera epidemic. Stripped of the British society of her youth and the society she fought so hard to attain in Hong Kong, she is compelled by her awakening conscience to reassess her life and learn how to love."First, let me say that this was definitely not an uplifting book, and that Kitty's character was shallow, selfish, and completely detestable. However, there was something so moving and poignant about the book that I honestly couldn't stop reading. Even though I was completely disgusted with Kitty, there was something utterly human about her character. It had a certain sadness about it, but it was so beautifully written. There was no gratuitous violence or stomach-turning description. It was mainly focused on the thoughts, feelings, and actions of a few key characters. Overall, a beautiful and moving read.
