James Everington | 53 comments Anyone read Three Ghost Stories by Dickens? I've never liked his novels too much, but thought I'd give this a go. I was quite disappointed.

I'd already read The Signalman in an anthology - good but not great. That opened this collection.

Of the other two, the middle story (The Haunted House) is very odd - full of digressions and very little tension. It was obviously intended to be something other than a chiller I guess, but any other literary merit escaped me too.

The third, The Trial For Murder, was okay-ish. Some creepy images but pretty predictable.

Just wondered what others thought and if I'm missing something. For me, compared to someone like Le Fanu say, this was pretty thin fare.

Char I do like some Dickens novels, most especially David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby, but I haven't read any of his ghost stories.
After reading this, I won't be reading them in the near future either.
