Greetings ! I founded this group as i wanted a group that focused just on the Fantasy genre and had no pressure on reading any books each month. Its more to discuss what you have already read and what you may wish to read in the future. As i could not find any suitable i decided it best to start a new group, so i hope others may also find the group suitable for what they are looking for and that it may allow them to enjoy our common love for fantasy !

Jeanne (jeannekc) I wouldn't mind reading a book together each month, so long as it isn't a requirement but an option. Other than that, it's great to have a group just for fantasy!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

The problem is that most fantasy novels are part of a series, so if we have a book reading each month then it does not allow you to finish the series of books, as the next month its a different book from another series, so that was the problem. So not sure how we could overcome that.

Jeanne (jeannekc) I suppose you're right, after all why develop a whole entire world for just one book?

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Hiya,
I recognize you all from the Sci-Fi/Fantasy group!

I like the concept of discussing books and series we've already read, as well as talking about books we are currently reading, either as a group, or as individuals.

I read far more fantasy these days than sci-fi; however, I have so little time for pleasure reading, it takes me forever to finish a book. I'm still reading A Game of Thrones by GRR Martin, a book that was read and discussed over at the Sci-fi/fantasy group several months ago!
BTW, I'm loving this book, and will continue with the series. Martin's style is at once both cinematic and literary. It's no wonder the book got optioned by HBO! I really hope it gets green-lighted.

Yep its so far all of us from the Sci Fi/Fantasy book club. I got tired of reading all those old science fiction books that i had read years ago. I did start A Game of Thrones but then never got to finish it in time before the next month's reading. I can tell its the type of series i would enjoy plus i find his style of writing of interest. He seems to take his time rather than rush release a new book each year, which i admire. One day i hope to get back to that series.

Jeanne (jeannekc) Actually, Martin has a bunch of things going on, he has another series he's working on Wild Cards, Vol. 01: Wild Cards, and other things that keep him busy, much to the consternation of some of his fans.

Not sure how we will go at getting new members, as i noticed the group search for fantasy always listed the groups with the most members first, so our group is many pages back and would be hard to find.

message 9: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeannekc) I've invited all my friends that are Fantasy readers. I also noticed that if we put book links in our posts using the "add book/author" link on the bottom right of the comment entry box, it puts a link on that book's page so that people who look at the page for the book here on goodreads see that there is a discussion here about it. I'm going to go back and edit all my posts that mention a book to include links.

Robert (rgbatduke) Well, I certainly do love fantasy (I read it, write it, and am even a member of the Mythopoeic Society on the side -- eventually I'd like them to become or sponsor a Goodreads group since their current discussion forums suck). I don't think it is quite fair to describe SF as all "those old Sci Fi books we've read years ago" and I enjoy it as well (and of course there is really a full spectrum between e.g. magical realism, through traditional S&S fantasy, through "swords and science fiction" semi-fantasy in the middle (e.g. Glory Road, The Practice Effect), up to hard core SF on the other side (with oddities such as space opera or Mention My Name in Atlantis along the way.

But it is perfectly reasonable to have a fantasy focused group regardless. The one thing about the SF&F group is that is is so BIG and there are so MANY discussions that it is a bit daunting for somebody with limited time. Splitting off a part of the fantasy discussion will make it easier to start or find a topic.

Yes the discussions on SF&F are many to follow, hopefully having just Fantasy will limit that some. The comment on SF was regarding myself and not meant as a comment on SF in general. I just wasnt enjoying rereading the old SF books i had once read back in the 70's as have limited time reading and prefer to read and discuss Fantasy. I still enjoy SF and recently read the Mars Trilogy by Robinson, but just prefer to read novels that i have not read rather than spend time reading what i once read in the 70's. Due to my interest in SF in the 70's i never actually read the Lord of the Rings and wasnt interested in Fantasy at that time.

If anyone has friends who like Fantasy send them a invite to the group, as we could do with more members. I have started doing those links also Jeanne to try and get our group more noticed.

New members should check our Poll as we have suggestions listed to vote on for our first reading for the month.

message 14: by Josh (new)

Josh | 53 comments I'll be glad to discuss books that I've read, and I have already read Mistborn, but I have SO many books that I've bought that I haven't even read yet and am trying to get through those before I get anything new. But if we do a monthly book reading I'll try to partake. Odds are I have the book anyways, heh.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I am in the same situation. Have a pile of books to read in a large storage box, but the monthly reading does help to get you to read authors or novels that you may have not considered yourself. I am glad Mistborn was chosen as our first group read as it seems The Wheel Time has been a series well read by our members.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Well I belong to a bunch of groups (both RL and online) and I like reading with others - I like having a "picked" book because it gives me a reason to work on something and I usually end up reading something I would not normally read. But I'm easy - just like talking to others about books ;-)

Jane (jane_jones) Lol - Wave Robin - I'm going to finish you husband's book tonight! I'm so excited - it's been killing me that I've not been able to read it - too busy at work - I've enjoyed it so far!

message 19: by Linda (new)

Linda Hi! I was just cleaning out my email and came across a message from JJ inviting me to join this group that I somehow missed along the way. I hardly read anything other than fantasy these days, so I thought I'd give it a look.

As for reading a book with the group, I'd love to do it, but I have such limited time for reading these days that it usually takes me longer to get through a book than a month. But I'd love to read the discussions and probably get a few more books to add to my to-read (someday)list.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Welcome to the group Linda.

Thanks :-) I'm happy to be here.

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Hi Linda! Glad you found us. I, too, have great difficulty getting through a book in a month or less. Like you, I have very limited pleasure reading time these days. I have a very demanding professional career and I write my own books and short stories as well. Busy, busy! Even so, I manage to read a little before bedtime each night.
Hope you enjoy the discussions.

Regards,

Leslie Ann
