Linda (lindacee) | 130 comments Hey guys! I need some help, I'm writing a story about a woman who lives in Texas and my knowledge of the area is pretty good but I can't decide if I should keep the details of the city she lives in really accurate or if I should do whatever I need to keep the story going in the direction I'm thinking it should?

I think location is important, but keeping a story on track is important also.

I'd suggest going in the direction that you choose the way the story should go.That's all i've got. :)

Awesome! :)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm curious, if this story is going to stay in one place (one location) then, sometimes the location is as much it's own character. And, sometimes that makes it better to invent a place for it.

If your just passing through, or starting there, then you might want to get the details accurate.

just a thought.

Oh, it's certainly not staying in one place! Thanks, I've got a pretty decent handle on it now (I think!)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) If your jumping around, I'm not sure of the mode of transportation but you can easily get the idea of where they are at by describing the airport, LAX is very distinctive, or the Trainstation, Victoria Station is very uniquely it's own thing. Via airplane the Sidney Opera House with it's sectional design (to me it looks like stacked up seashells) is very indigenous to Sidney. Once you do that, you don't have to do much for the reader to provide their own mental details about real places. All you need to do is remind them (via discription...i.e passing the Arc De Triumph in Paris or the London Cabs, accents etc.)

I know you said you've got a handle on it, but I gave my hint anyway.

Sorry...just can't help myself sometimes.
