Adriana Discuss The Lovely Bones here!

I've read this before. I'm not looking forward to reading "the scene" again...

Lynne | 35 comments oh dear! I just read some of the reviews on this book (most were beyond negative) and now I feel the urge to truly apologize to y'all for having submitted this book for the monthly read :(

I'm going to start reading Lovely Bones today/this weekend.. simply because I feel obligated to do so (mainly since I suggested it).. however, I promise, from now on, to read reviews BEFORE I suggest another monthly read.

Adriana I think it's the ending. I saw the movie so I know. I actually now have this one! :D
My main library hates me as well. It has Stardust but only in spanish! Maybe my brother has it...

Lynne | 35 comments I just finished The Lovely Bones. over all, I liked the book and I've rated it 3 stars

I didn't *hate* it... but I didn't love it either. It wasn't completely awful (writing-wise) as some of the other reviews have pointed out, but some of the way things were written was just ...uhm, weird?
I don't know how to explain it. The way the author described things was sometimes strange and awkward.
I had to keep reminding myself that the story is being told by a fourteen year old girl to justify the oddly written stuff (and if that was intentional of the author, then well done her!)

However, there were a lot of subtle touches that I really appreciated and I thought the author was very insightful to things most people just never think about (like what a dead person thinks about).

I *really liked* the concept of everyone having their own little heaven. And it makes me wonder what kind of heaven/s are my loved ones in (and what would my heaven be like?)...
I've had people close to me die (though thankfully, not how the protagonist died) so I really related to the void someone leaves behind on earth when they die and how those left behind move forward (or not) in their lives.
It's amazing how one event sets off a perpetual ripple effect that spills over and touches many lives in many different, long-lasting and unexpected ways.

The ending was weird too (weird like Patrick Swazey and Demi Moore getting together in 'Ghost' sorta of weird). I found it really just too much, too unbelievable and I felt like the author felt the need to throw in some gratuitous sex to make her book whole or something. So I was annoyed the author insulted my intelligence with that. but, eh, whatever. I guess a teenager in the protagonists position might find that important....

Now I'm mildly curious to how the movie (based on this book) deals with the ghostly effects and stuff - but I'm not going to be busting the doors down to rent a copy of it.

Adriana Starting to read it now!

Adriana Took me forever to read it! After two days I finally got over the rape scene. So happy when it was done. I lied most of it and cried a lot. These people had their lives pretty screwed when she died. It's so sad. The only problem is her having sex with Ray... I mean what was that!? The movie was just a kiss and for good reason. It had some different events going on but seriously having sex with someone elses body? ew...

The heaven thing was interesting. I've sometimes pictured heaven and have realized that it didn't have a whole bunch of people which I thought before it should have. I mean everyone is together when they die. Everyone from across the world in one place right? Maybe. I also have heard something interesting before where you review your life and there are others around you. I forget where but I have that image in my mind as well as sitting by a grassy hill under a tree. In the background is like church or school or something and I would run to it. Maybe Jesus is around somewhere talking. I also have thought it being a library by the ocean with people around the corners of the library. I'm pretty sure I got that from an anime but whatever. It's what I would like. Meeting people. Tlking about books. Reading endless amounts of books. I don't think I would like any family members there like her grandfather. I think those old folks won't like me. And close family members... I don;t know. I guess it's because she's in the inbetween but I would think you would be really happy. Bliss.

Connection is what I think you meant by the effects are lives can make on each other Lynne. You said it eloquently though.

I cried a lot in this book. Thinking about this world we live in and my family.

I got really creeped out by the actor in this film. *shudder* for awhile. Really creepy. Unexpectedly so on account of his other performances.

Wait. What did you rate it Lynne?
