C.R.R. Peyton | 1 comments Jaws was my obsession. When I was in junior high, I got sick and my mom brought Jaws back from the library. Of course, I'd already seen the movie a trillion times and was familiar with the iconic cover. This was an early edition, maybe the first, with a very strange looking shark on the cover, something more ominous and dreadful. In my youth, I wanted to skip to the third act and read and re-read "the boat" part. Re-reading it in later years (4 or 5 times), I appreciated that this story was as much about class division and island society. The whole love affair (sexual tryst?) that was absent from the movie, took up a good portion of the book and seemed to be the emotional driving force for the whole narrative. The movie is about as perfect as a movie can get (aside from a few technical issues) but the book is its own thing, a very worthy read.
