I can say "Sharpe." However, the Sharpe series is much harsher, none of the light hearted friendship of Aubrey/Maturin.
It is indeed, Bob. And I am glad for that too. I love the fun in Aubrey/Maturin, but it's nice to enter the darkness with Sharpe for a while. It's a great balance to bounce back and forth between the two series.
How about The Ramage series by Dudley Pope? Not as good as Lambdin or Forester or O'Brian, but good reads, usually. Forgive me if this is common knowledge, by McBooks Press has a monthly publication of author interviews and book reviews of new nautical fiction. http://www.mcbooks.com/ Also: Captain Frederick Marryat

On the nautical front I have read and can recommend the following:
The Hornblower Series, by C. S. Forester
The Bolitho Series, by Alexander Kent
The Alan Lewrie Series, by Dewey Lambdin
The Kydd Sea Adventures, by Julian Stockwin
So, are there any others you would recommend? And if you would like to trade Wellington's Army novel series we can do that too (can you say Sharpe?)
cheers
