Should schools provide birth control pills and condoms to students who want to have sex without parental consent?

Donneil D. Jackson (donneil) | 13 comments As a parent, I feel like if my child is grown enough to have sex, then my child needs to be grown enough to seek condoms/birth controll pills on her own.I think the school should educate them to practice safe sex. But I don't any school giving my child some birth control pills. Condoms maybe. But no birth control pills.

Jiaka1981 Winfield | 42 comments I don't have a probelm with schools giving out condoms ( it saves on kids getting a caught stealing them) I don't think it "promotes" sexual activity I think i educates and encourages those who have already made the choice to do it safely. However the pill is another story. I have been through many diffrent types of birth control and only a doctor should prescrbe pills to anyone. They can do some crazy things to your system. I also think that being mature enough to seek out parental advise to get birth control is a way to ensure you are mature enough to handle the responsiblity of being sexually active.

Lil (lilmar) | 28 comments I do have a problem with schools dispensing condoms and birth control, and even sex ed. I believe it is a parents' job to do this, not a system or government.
I do, however realize that this is not practical for many reasons, so I think the best option is for the parent(s) to have to give permission for the child to attend the class or be given anything, until the child is at least 16.
We have three kids and two of them never attended those classes or were given anything. Since we both believe it is the responsibility of the parent we did it ourselves. I had many frank and open discussions with our daughter about sex and sexuality, she knew she could ask me anything (still does, even though she is married and a mother now as well) and that she would get a straight answer.
Our sons know the same, one is now 19 and a responsible adult, our youngest is 11 and starting to become curious and ask questions. His are answered to a point. at 11 years of age, we do not feel he is ready for information he is not going to be using until later on in life, since he knows that sex is not ok until marriage.

Margaret (LoveMyFrogs) | 35 comments Jiaka, you beat me this time! Regarding birth control pills. I think only a license physician or nurse practitioner should provide these. There are too many side effects and different health histories to consider for a lay person(no pun intended)to provided these. Regarding condoms. This would be acceptible. Sometimes kids don't plan ahead. Having these available in schools might aide in the prevention of STD's or pregnacy. Sometimes they are to ashamed or embarassed to obtain any type of birth control. Kids are going to have sex. That is a fact of life. No matter how much you explain, talk to or threaten them. It is better to provide something than nothing. With the condoms, all schools(even Catholic) should have a sex education course. My daughter was 13 when I took her to get birthcontrol pills. I thought it was early, but I wanted to be prepared. I was too late. We found out she was pregnant at the health department! Do not ever think that your child is too young or not having sex. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Margaret (LoveMyFrogs) | 35 comments Added comment. Parents still should be the first line of defence and information regarding birth control. This day and time, parents need all the help we can get.

Jiaka1981 Winfield | 42 comments You know, the sad thing is i know children in the 6th grade who are already sexually active. Thier parents know nothing about it, and i'm sure they believe its too early to worry about sex with thier pre-teens. My sister in Law had 3 abortions by the time she was 16. Her monther was shocked to find out she was not a virin and pregnant at 18. All those years she hid the truth from her mother. Children need to be protected from themseleves and to do this they must be educated about sex not just told not to do it, but made sure they really understand.

I saw the worst video on this german website, It reminded me of the "Drunk Driving" video they showed us in drivers ed, horrible, gory and and an eye opener. I didnt know what i was looking at seeing the thumbnail so i clicked on it, it was a video of an abortion. The worst thng i've EVER seen. I couldnt even watch it all, and as i left it i thought, "they should show THAT in sex ed. No one would ever want to have sex again after seeing that.
i also learned that if you are re-directed to a site in a foreign language don't click on ANYTHING!
