I always give books and ask for books. My mom wants a National Geographic World Atlas (hey, I guess I better order that pretty soon...).
She loves historical mysteries by Candace Robb, Fiona Buckley, and Kate Sedley. I need to see if any of her authors have written anything new.
I usually get books for Christmas, too. I'm asking for The Wordy Shipmates, which I had to return to the library before finishing, and Bonk by Mary Roach, and the new Malcolm Gladwell book.
Hey, those are all non-fiction! I wish Tamora Pierce's sequel to Terrier would come out, I'm dying to read it.

I always give books and something I've made. I'm going to the Guadalajara book fair so this year, like last, they'll get books in Spanish.
I am giving my siblings the book 'Weird Washington' (just because it looks like fun - they all live on the East Coast so I know they don't have it). I might get 'Websterisms: A Collection of Words and Definitions Set Forth by the Founding Father of American English' and 'American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House' for other family members. As for books I want, I usually prefer a gift card for any bookstore so that I can browse and get what strikes me at the moment.
I'm going to get Cleo the new Lynda Barry in keeping with my new tradition of getting her a Lynda Barry book for Christmas every year (ummm... since last year). I want to get myself David Macaulay's "The Way We Work," his newest book, but I will probably get it for my nephew instead. Judy, did you see the Weird Washington guys at the State Library? I wanted to go, but I was working. I love stuff like that. We made a special trip to Winlock to see the giant egg when Cleo was little.
I did go to the Weird Washington presentation. I'm afraid it wasn't as interesting as the book. I don't think these guys are veteran presenters. Great book, though.
I jumped the gun and bought *myself* the new Lynda Barry right before our last meeting. I love Christmas! :)
I think I might buy myself The Joy of Cooking. I've been wanting it for quite a while now...
I think I might buy Little Brother for Cleo, along with Graceling by Kristin Kashore and Looking For Alaska, an Abundance of Katherines, and Paper Towns by John Green. She'll have a list of 500 other books, of course.

I'm giving American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham, Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende, Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain and The Fabric of the Cosmos: space, time and the texture of reality by Brian Greene
I brought books back from Guadalajara! A group (part of a 50 book series) of books about food from various regions of Mexico (this is some NGO or governmental series, not slick publishers), a bunch of gorgeous children's books from the publisher CIDCLI (lots of theirs have the texts by famous poets, gorgeous illustrations), a book on textiles of the Michoacan region for my daughter, a graphic novel on Kafka illustrated by R Crumb for my son, and flipbooks for the young ones. I will bring my Guad stuff to book group in January, the ones I don't give away.
Now I just went to Amazon and ordered The Mysterious Benedict Club for my grandson; two books, a copy in English and another in Spanish for me: Sol, piedras, y sombras; and finally a book on eating in Mexico City. I'm such a book glutton! Books and food, books on food, the best things to spend my money on!

Sarah, I heard good things about American Lion- did you read it yet? I really liked the part of Kitchen Confidential that I read, but I had to return it to the library before I was too far in. Good choices!
Kate, hope you had fun in Guadalajara! I am looking forward to seeing some of your books, especially if you hung on to any the flipbooks. that Kafka graphic novel is pretty trippy.
Yay, Mysterious Benedict Society! You're going to like it, I think.

I thought I'd rescuscitate this thread... got any books to give or get on your list? We're doing very minimal gifting this year, but I'm thinking that Dave would like this one...
There's a great list of gifty coffee table books on NPR right now, that's where I saw it.
