Brigid ✩ What phone hacking incident are you referring to? It's kind of hard for me to take a stance when I don't really know what the situation is ...

Brigid ✩ Ohhh, okay. I think I did hear about that, but obviously it wasn't as big of a deal over here in the US.

Brigid ✩ That's true. Like we have the Patriot Act in the US. After 9/11, a law was passed that the government was allowed to search records, read private emails, hack telephone conversations etc. in order to prevent terrorist acts. I understand the government wanting to protect people with situations like these––but on the other hand, how much of it is protection and how much of it is an outright invasion of privacy? This is a question I struggle with...

Brigid ✩ Haha. I don't know about whether the government wants mind control. But I am afraid of the government becoming so overprotective that nothing we do is private anymore. And then life would get all 1984 on us ...

Brigid ✩ I haven't either, but it's the prime example of a futuristic novel where the government watches everything we do. Exactly... it's quite a valid question. At what point do we sacrifice our privacy for our safety?

message 9: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ Haha, no you're not. You probably just glanced over it. But it's funny that we had the same thought...

Brigid ✩ Well, just the idea of the government promising to "protect" us when it's really controlling our lives ... 1984 is pretty much the classic literary example.
