Not really 'Do you choose a book by it's cover' ... as that would be silly, BUT if you've already decided that you want to read a particular book, read the reviews etc - and when buying online you see that it's available by different publishers with a variance in covers, do you choose the one with the most attractive illustration even if it means paying a bit more? ... or is the cover totally irrelevant to you?

Yes, I do. I am about to return a book to Amazon because it isn't in the condition that I ordered and it has a different cover. I took longer than usual choosing the cover because there were some pretty good ones. I am into art and graphics so I love a good book cover. I also avoid buying the movie cover.

Snap. I'm the same Kirsty. Unless it's really expensive then I'll pay more for the cover I'm most drawn to. With Water for Elephants I had to have this one Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and I've recently bought Perfume and had to have this cover Perfume by Patrick Süskind .
Movie covers generally put me off to, but I did make an exception and buy a tatty 70s Picnic at Hanging Rock paperback with the film cover just for nostalgia's sake.

I love the feel of a paperback and the artwork does play a part in my reading enjoyment I suppose and a naff cover would put me off slightly.

Yes! Absolutely! lol like you Ness I try to avoid movie/tv show covers but if it means a much higher cost I will buy the cheapest, depends how much the design speaks to me. For example I really want to read Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead but I don't want that cover I want Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead just in case I fall in love with it and want to buy the rest, I love the contrast of black and red against each other and the pictures look so pretty. It is really hard to find though, the next 6 you can find no problem (even in red and black) but the first book there only seems to be this one everywhere... Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy Series #1) by Richelle Mead *sadface*

Oh yes I can see what you mean Sam, the black rose on red is a much more stylish cover :) and I'm the same if there's a series I have to have them all in the same format.

I like those Orion Anniversary series ones Kirsty, they do look quite special.

Most the covers aren't on Goodreads yet so here's a link Orion sculpts 20th anniversary releases

Ten | 34 comments Oh yes, totally. But I have to say I also like my book series to be uniformly styled, and this trumps cover - I hate it when, for example, there's a trilogy and they change the cover style on a later edition, I have to hunt for the original so that it matches the other two.
