THE GAME:

Everybody starts from an imaginary spot on the left of Square 1 (except for 3 ROAR winners). Roll a die, move that number of squares and read as per shelf / instruction on square you have landed on.

For example, if you rolled a 1, then you move to Square 1 and read from the historical shelf. If you rolled a 4, then you move to Square 4 and read from the novel shelf.

Snake: if a player lands at the tip of the snake's head, s/he has to slide down to the square at the snake's tail and read from shelf s/he landed on.

Ladder: if a player lands on a square that is at the base of a ladder, s/he has to climb up to the square at the top of the ladder and read from shelf you landed on.

The first player to land on Square 144 and finished reading the book from that shelf is the winner (even if you roll more than you need to get to Square 144).

For example, if you are on Square 142 and you rolled 3, then just go to Square 144 and finish reading a book from that shelf to win.

The Game will officially start on 00:01 am 1 February 2012 (Local Standard Time – ie. wherever you are). You may roll your first die and organise your first book BUT do NOT start reading until the official start time.

CONDITIONS:

DO NOT roll the die until you have at least started the book you are to read from your current position. That’s right, NO planning too much ahead on this game. You can only roll the die for your next move when you have started reading the book from your current shelf and this is only so you can, if you need to, get the next book from the library.

Amended (16 Feb): You can read a maximum of 2 books at around the same time however please note, you will have to finish reading all books to win / finish the game

If you choose NOT to read from a shelf, roll a die, move that number of squares back and read from shelf your landed on. However, you cannot backtrack after you have rolled the die for your move back.

For example, you landed on Square 65 (shelf: reference) but you don’t want to read from this shelf. Roll die again and if you roll 5, move back 5 squares to Square 60 (graphic-novels) and read from this shelf.

If after the above step, you once again found that you do NOT want to read from this second shelf, roll a die and wait for that number of days prior to rolling again for your next move.

THE RUNNING OF THE GAME:

There will be thread/s called “Movement – Thread #” to post your roll of die and where you have moved to. Please post as follows:

Rolled 5
Move to Square 39 (historical romance)

OR

Rolled 8
Move to Square 19
Up the ladder to Squre 44 (2008)

For the ease of tracking, I will be assuming the most recent post to be your current position in noting the “ladder” for the Game.

These threads will be closed off at approximately 100 posts (to keep it neat and easy to track – hopefully). So if the thread is still open (even at 100 posts), just continue to post there until it is closed. Do NOT re-post in the new thread as I will take into account whatever is posted in an open thread until it’s closed.

There will also be a separate thread for your reviews of books read for this game. We’d love to hear your opinion as to the book & the shelf you’ve read.

I will be a little bit busy for the next week with Chinese New Year & Australia Day coming up and I've got family / social events one after the other :p so... feel free to post your Qs but please be patient for my responses. Thanks!

Just an FYI, when I click on your Roll the Die link above it says the page does not exist. I presume that we are using Random.org. How many die do we roll, 2? So...I just went to Random.org, rolled two dice, and got an 11. So I get to read anything I want cuz it says Free Read? If I had rolled a 6, I would pick a book off of the 2009 shelf and read it.

Another cool game, Kazza and gang. You all are so creative. I can't wait until Feb 1 to start.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod

Wow, I'm not even finished with posting all the threads!

Sorry, link fixed - ONE die (yes, will take you longer to finish! ha ha ha)

And sorry to make you wait too BUT since I won't have much time to post these threads for over a week, I thought I'd better do it now PLUS the Mods have been waiting to play since um, June / July?!?! so you get to wait 1.5 weeks!! :p

message 9: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments :( lo!! we love you guys Kazza!! its just torture having to wait...whoever said Patience was a virtue, never had to wait for reading challenges to be posted

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Whoever said Patience was a virtue never met me, that is for sure.

message 11: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments ditto!! i'm doing a book bingo in another group and I drive the category caller nuts with my updates until the next category is posted...one day she is going to penalize me for that...lol

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i'm assuming its like any shelf, as long as the book appears on that first page of shelves we are good right?

Dee wrote: "i'm assuming its like any shelf, as long as the book appears on that first page of shelves we are good right?"

Nah, it's as long as book appears on that shelf, so it can ben on page #100 of that shelf, if you want to :)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments figured but wanted to check...I decided to roll now (just to torture myself) and the book I want is all checked out of the library..haha! fingers crossed on it coming before the 1st

LOL, Dee, you're definitely an ADDICT!! I thought I was bad but I know the torture lies in NOT knowing what your next book for the game, isn't it? I know exactly the feeling :p

Don't forget to post your roll in the Movement thread.

Btw, if someone can see / check the 'challenge' feature on our group - I'm hoping I've done everything correctly. I'm sure it wouldn't take 6 months to play it once through but we can play over & over again, if we want :)

message 16: by Dee (last edited Jan 19, 2012 02:32PM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments looks good to me, and then on Feb we can say this number of books I think...

well, i'm on a limited book buying budget this year because I just had to buy a new car, so I have a 450 dollar monthly payment that I hadn't planned on...so money is tight and i'll be using the library more

OK. I am new to this game...never played Shoots and Ladders as a kid. So let me see if I got this right. If I roll a 2, I go to the 2007 shelf via hotlink. I can read any book shelved as 2007, not just one published in 2007. Right?

@ Kazza,
small fix on the gameboard (Since you posted it, obviously you are the only one who can fix it.):

In message 4, square 92, the html didn't work in mine. I think it may be because there are somehow two sets of quotes, & should be only one. If that's not it, I haven't a clue. Can you fix it?

Or, if you want, you can just take out the html altogether, since I see other people who created tasks didn't put that in theirs.

The page comes up fine for me from Kazza's link. I wonder if the site was just down when you tried it, Lyn. Maybe try again?

And we may need clarification for how many dice to roll for squares # 10 and 62, not just for the first move.

That's absolutely correct, Bea. And I'm glad you're joining us for another game this year :)

@ Susan - 10, 62, & 92 amended.

10 & 62 - one die each

I've fixed 92 with a link to roll 3 dice :)

However, for clarity: unless specified, roll only ONE die.

Oh, yes. This one looks like fun! I think last year having only 6-7 months to figure it all out kinda overwhelmed me. This one appeals to my child self. :)

message 33: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments I wanted to go to Wales after reading A String in the Harp by Nancy Bond. Also, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper. (They are the last two in a series, but the earlier books in the series aren't set in Wales.) And Brother Cadfael from the series by Ellis Peters is Welsh.

A few links that may prove helpful for those who land on that square:

http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/73...
http://www.goodreads.com/genres/wales
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category...

(Although just because a book is on one of these lists doesn't automatically mean it qualifies for the game. Sometimes people put books that don't match on these lists.)

message 39: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments so when someone wins, are we just going to start over, and the winner/top 3 will get random spaces, or what is the follow-on plan going to be

message 40: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9035 comments Mod
Wow, Dee... My thought was that we'll just play once through til we have at least 1 person completed the board (as I'm not quite sure how long the game would actually last) and then, for the rest of the players, we can continue on til they finish (if they want) or depending on 'popularity' to play the game once more but that's about it :)

Don't want to play it to death - maybe we'll repeat it another year ;)

And btw, don't you sleep? ha ha ha, you seem to always be online!!! Well, I'm about to hit the sack (even though it's not yet midnight, it is PAST my bedtime) so nighty-night! xx

I know! It's so hard to wait!!!
I'm keeping myself busy looking at a few pages of the abandoned shelf at a time. Even if I limit myself to books already on my TBR, I'll have lots to choose from.
