RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I think 30 Rock is the best show on television.

"Son, there's nothing to get freaked out about! That's daddy's Japanese sex doll in his bed!"

message 2: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh I agree.

message 3: by Dan (new)

Dan (akagunslinger) 30 Rock is one of the three shows I watch religiously.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I love the Big Bang Theory. If Tina Fey was on that show it would be near perfect.

message 5: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) The only shows I watch regularly are "My Name is Earl" and "Desperate Housewives." That's how I manage to read so much.

Is Tina Fey hot?

message 7: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 22, 2008 08:40AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Whoa yeah.

She's eye candy and marriage material all wrapped together.

Félix (habitseven) Is Tina Fey hot?

Oh my -- YES!

Matt | 819 comments *Geek Alert*

Two words: Battlestar Galactica (the new one, not the disco one)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It's so sad, all I watch regularly now are news shows (Rachel Maddow rawks!), and The Daily Show. And SNL, sporadically.

I did watch the first 6 episodes of Flight of the Conchords last night. Very funny!

message 11: by Gåry! (last edited Nov 22, 2008 11:40AM) (new)

Gåry! (garyneill) One of the great things about 30 Rock is they've got the clout to pull in some great guest stars and get them to do some ridiculous things...

"Help me Tina Fey, you're my only hope!"

LL Cool J's turn as Ridikolous. Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Rubens' excellent protrayal of a physically challenged member of royalty from some obscure country.

And, of course, Alec Baldwin just gets better and better with each episode. Last years episode where he and Tracey had the psych session and Alec played the part of Tracey's father and mother during the role-playing experiment was ridiculously offensive and brilliantly hilarious at the same time.

It's pretty much 30 Rock, True Blood, Dexter, and the Office for me. I only see True Blood and Dexter through the generosity of friends (no cable for me) and my interest in Dexter is waning thanks to an even more implausible and kind of silly plotline this year; and the Office is on shaky ground, the laughs are still often, but the distance between them is starting to grow for me. It's still good and generally amusing, but uneven.

30 Rock is definitely the top of the game right now with so many great characters and sort of a classic TV kind of production where they are pushing the boundaries a little bit. You can't show fake dog penises on TV after all.

message 12: by Dan (new)

Dan (akagunslinger) I'm also casting my vote for Tina Fey being hot. The two shows I watch besides 30 Rock are the Office and Pushing Daisies. Although I'll be down to two shows when Daisies gets the axe. On the other hand, Kath and Kim will probably be on the for the next five years.

Oh and I'm listening to a Flight of the Conchords cd right now. The second season is supposed to start in February or March, I think.

message 13: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I'm glad someone else mentioned Pushing Daisies first. I love it, but sometimes I feel guilty watching it. It's so uncool.

I'm so glad Toby is back on The Office.

Also, I thought Al Gore's appearance on 30 Rock was hilarious.

message 15: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, no, no, David. Tina Fey is a different kind of hot. She's smart, approachable hot. She's a whole different species.

But I don't think you'd like her, her boobs aren't big enough...

And Gary, I agree, Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Martin, none of whom interest me much outside of 30 Rock, have all knocked it out of the park this season...

message 16: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh yeah, and Dave, Toby's return was awesome...the screaming when Michael first sees him...brilliant.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I have to vote for Tina Fey as hot also.

Also Entourage is a good show that I try to watch every week though I can afford to miss it once in awhile.

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ingenting) I have never seen 30 Rock. I like The Office (both versions), Pushing Daisies, and Project Runway (even though the last season sucked).

Tina Fey is not as hot as the girl on Chuck, which I also watch.

message 20: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Tina Fey is attractive, but I will forever associate her with Sarah Palin now, so that makes me not as attracted to her anymore.

message 21: by shellyindallas (last edited Nov 22, 2008 05:49PM) (new)

shellyindallas I liked when Alec Baldwin's character was running from the cops in the Jennifer Aniston episode and she goes "he's the one in the cool, cool hat!"

And then in the last one when the Feds caught Steve Martin's character and he wailed "I counted wrong! I counted wrong!"

But enough of that, The Wire is the best show that has ever been on television. Ever. Have I said this before?

message 22: by Gåry! (new)

Gåry! (garyneill) haha, that was great... he miscounted the men.

I keep hearing this "The Wire" show is really good, I need to check it out.

message 23: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) The really disconcerting thing for me, Mindy, is that Sarah Palin is hot, too. As long as you don't have listen to her speak, that is. Or think about her maybe ending up the leader of the "free" world.

And yes Michelle, the girl on Chuck is way hotter than Tina Fey (and Sarah Palin hehe).

message 24: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) My all time favorite TV show was (no, not Howdy Doody Time) the final episode of Six Feet Under. The ending was breathtaking -- gives me goosebumps to think about it.

Bu then again, it wasn't TV. It was HBO.

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I love Chuck and Heroes. Zachary Levi (Chuck) sets my geek-lovin' heart all a-pitter.

message 26: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy I think television is the most dangerous invention to ever manipulate human society. If I had the choice to eradicate at once nuclear weapons, poverty, George W. Bush, and another half-dozen despots, or disinvent television, I would choose the latter without a moment's hesitation.

Also my first post in terminal coffee, but not my first sober post. Yeehaw for being agreeable.

message 27: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 23, 2008 05:03AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Sarah from Chuck is going through what Jennifer Garner went through in Alias; the producers' put her in a different hot outfit every episode. This week they put her in prostitute garb so she could sneak into a hotel.

Not that I'm complaining.

Never EVER ask if any female is "hot" around RA. Just do the math yourself... Vagina? Check. Under 250 pounds? Check. No goiters, cleft palate, or first-degree burns? Check. She is HOT, HOT, HOT! Yes, Bea Arthur qualifies!

And your mom. Give me a hug, son!

shellyindallas Isaiah- Luckily for the rest of the world, you'll never have that choice.

Isaiah, I love that you stumbled drunkenly into this conversation to make that pronouncement. I wholeheartedly agree with you. This country has a mental addiction, and it creeps me out.

"the mind control is steep here"

I've been "off" television for a year and a half now. I can usually go about this long before roommates, moving, something gets in there and causes there to be a television somewhere in my home. Then I start watching again.

It takes about a month, and I'm counting the days by the shows, and I know when what is on what channel. To wean off it only takes about half that time (reverse the formula for getting over an ex)

I've been reading this thread and waiting to chime in with a blatant "I don't watch TV" but then I know someone would come back with a Sam Jackson-esqe zinger.

David, don't correct my grammar. I'm all grammar-sensitive from my grammar-flagellation the past two days, and I'm not in the mood ... actually, bring it. I'm probably still a wee bit drunk.

message 32: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The "hungover but still vaguely drunk" phenomenon is interesting. I can never quite tell which part is hangover and which part is still evidence of drunkenness.

I don't think watching tv makes you less intelligent, and the research on tv's impact on kids has been mixed at best. The methodologies are tough to rationalize. I think anything can be done in excess, of course, including books.

If someone doesn't want to watch tv at that particular point in her life, I get that. But maybe it's a good time for me/others to watch tv. It's kind of like being a vegetarian. I'm a vegetarian, and it's important to me, but I'm not going to rag on other people for eating meat.

But if you feel like you watch too much and don't want to watch anymore, Sallers, feel free. You just got married and you're a new teacher. You have other things to do, anyway. :)

message 33: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Right, RA. You put that well. Later, when I'm sober I might read back over what I wrote earlier and realize I'm full of self-contradiction - but -

I don't think television, or the act of watching it, is only for stupid people. And I don't think TV causes stupidity. Neither/nor.

Like everything else, TV, NPR, red wine, exercise, meat, coffee, sex ... if you have an addictive personality (which I do) you can find a way to get too much of it. For me, life is a constant adjustment to get balance.

You are right, also about my newlywed & new teacher status, I just don't have time for television. I also don't have time for pleasure reading. But that's ok. I'm not looking down on people who have time to read all four Twilight books in a week. I wish I had that time, but I don't. I also don't much urgency for getting skunkdrunk or for step aerobics these days.

Sometimes I go through phases when I smoke cigarettes, or where I like to drink beer everyday after school. I try not to judge myself during those times, and I reel it in as soon as I can. Its the same with television for me. If one is around I find myself watching it every afternoon and evening, so I thus later focus for a while on weening myself off of it for a while. I like the way my mind operates when it is not distracted by Alton Brown everyday.

I'm sorry to be judgmental. I tend to unleash an unpleasant side of me about things like that. I remember stepping on somebody's toes about credit cards in the same way this summer. Mindy, Sarah, whomever, I'm sorry again about that.

Lordy! Is it Sunday or what? Think I should wander back over to the apology thread.

message 34: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I don't think it was me. (Although I have a horrible credit history.)

message 35: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy One of my favorite Onion articles ever, RA! I think that one and this one -- http://www.theonion.com/content/node/... -- are written just for me.

I've actually long ago given up as annoying and ineffectual the practice of rubbing my disdain for television in people's faces. (Although I used to be especially guilty of this.) Now when people talk about television, I usually just mumble "oh I don't watch that show," and nod along stupidly to whatever philistine nonsense they're going on about.

But drunken (hungover) Goodreads posts are a different matter and since we're here...

Although I'm glad to have a comrade-in-arms, I don't agree with Sally that tv is simply "bad in excess." Television is the most effective form of autocratic control that has ever existed. The content is entirely superseded by the medium, which is actively maintained by a small, plutomanic contingent of society with the express purpose of degrading the human mind's ability to process information on a mass scale.

Whether or not this was conceived as the original purpose of television is immaterial (though the answer is probably no). Qualities inherent to the technology itself rendered it suitable for only one use -- the appropriation of the human organism's responsiveness to visual stimuli in the interest of inhibiting an understanding of the boundaries of the natural world (thus, selfhood), and thereby obviating the need for or interest in independent thought.

I know, I know. Get out yer foil hats.

shellyindallas Oh, speaking of love:

Sheeley, fellate me you self-righteous, schnozz-beset whore.

Where'd you learn to talk like that, Isaiah? Glad you're too good for television and self-righteousness, it could have been a lot worse.

message 38: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy Agreed.

shellyindallas BTW- Didn't you used to live in Austin? I'm quite sure we have a mutual friend.

message 41: by Laurel (last edited Nov 23, 2008 01:39PM) (new)

Laurel I'd rather watch TV than read Isaiah's posts.

message 42: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 23, 2008 02:04PM) (new)

Isaiah, did you really say this?

Sheeley, fellate me you self-righteous, schnozz-beset whore.

If so, that has to be one of the most sexist, personal, and cruel insults I have ever read on GoodReads yet. (And that's saying a lot.)

Lame. Really, really lame.

message 43: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 23, 2008 03:16PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Isaiah, I can't tell you how tempted I am to kick your ass out of this group for insulting one of my best friends on GR. Or maybe I should go private and make sure you're excluded from the conversation just because I disagree with you and you leveled mean-spirted insults at my friends. Shelly and David were kicked out of the group you moderate for less.

But then...I wouldn't be better any than your co-moderator, would I?

You and I have always gotten along, Isaiah...I hope we can still get along despite your getting caught in the crossfire with that other bullshit. I sense you're a better person than that one comment.

message 44: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy I did indeed say that.

For the record, let me preface that I think all of this infighting and clannery on Goodreads is unbelievably childish. And I consciously avoided the crossfire; that is, until the comment in question.

Why did I succumb? Ultimately, it doesn't matter, because it was a petty, classless, sexist thing to say and that will stand taller than anything I'm about to say.

But it was my perception, that within all of the adolescent squabbling going on that I didn't care about, that for some reason Shelly was singling out not someone's views, but their personal foibles and insecurities (I'm talking about Charissa here and her much-maligned need for affirmation), and picking on them like a schoolyard bully. For what reason? I was unable to ascertain. The logic of most of the other disagreements and mud being flung, I could follow. But this apparent holier-than-thou remonstrance appeared totally without cause.

(I do not mean to imply that I supported Charissa's reactions, nor her own brand of adolescence, and I told her as much when I invited her back to moderatorship.)

I reasoned that to someone with this sort of approach to human interaction, something should be said -- primarily for shock value -- which was bullying, mean, and totally without cause. I am and was keenly aware of the hypocrisy in the use of "self-righteous" in particular, as in finally entering the fray in such a manner I was imagining myself as righter of wrongs, re-establisher of equilibrium, etc., which is just total bollocks. But I pushed the "post" button anyway, primarily to show solidarity with the offended, but also, to be frank, because I didn't think Shelly would actually see it.

Again, I am aware that rationale does not equal justification. In fact, while I'm afraid I don't see anything in particular wrong with the logic, I regret the remark.

I would ask that I be considered not by the cheapness of one moment of very little discretion, but by the levelheadedness which I more habitually demonstrate.

And, Shelly, for what it's worth, I apologize.

message 45: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 23, 2008 05:37PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Thanks, Isaiah. I've had my share of regret over GR comments I've made as well. I appreciate what you're saying, and it's fair to say you don't have all the history and the like, and I doubt very much if you're the only one sick of the fighting. Let's put the fucker to rest.

message 46: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy Thanks, RA, and well said. I am aware I don't have all the history, which was yet another reason not to jump in in the first place. I've also absconded from my pseudo-moderator position. I have no interest in being perceived as a partisan.

Books Ring Mah Bell so how 'bout that t.v.?

um.

I like Weeds. Californication was great the first season, this season kinda blows. I admit to having a girl crush on Marcy Runkle...
This season has let me down, even though I love Marcy!

I loved the Office but I have not seen an episode yet this season.

I don't watch anything religiously, except Keith Olbermann.

message 48: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, man, you've been missing some great Office episodes, Books...Toby's back!

I'm on season two of Weeds and diggin' it every week.

I'm still catching up on House. Now that I can't run outside as easily I'll probably catch up while working out.
