Bridgette wrote: "lets dicuss non-fiction authors this will include biographies, travel books, etc"This seems a bit broad to me, Bridgette, a bit like saying Let's discuss fiction authors, but I'm happy to discuss, say, travel books.
I particularly like the Dorling Kindersley guide books (lots of photos, cut-away diagrams of buildings, timelines, local information etc) but I guess you're particularly thinking of travel writing. So here I'll mention Jan Morris who has written lots of studies of exotic places (I'm ploughing through her book on Hong Kong, where I was brought up, but there are also titles on Venice, and even a novel Hav about a fictional East Mediterranean city-state) as well as her own Wales.
Recommended to me (though I'm ashamed to say I haven't yet got stuck into) are Bruce Chatwin and Colin Thubron, the latter with a book on Tibet I hope to tackle soon.
