Kathryn here, and I have to apologize for the slow start to our January book notes. I hope your new year is off to uproarious adventures. In Los Angeles, cast-off trees are waiting for pick-up at the curb and people everywhere are using label makers and organizational apps to get 2012 snapped together and ready to go. In the midst of it all, we're ready (at long last), dear Seedpodders, for another set of book notes for you:

Even though SOPA has gone to sleep for a while, there's still a lot to talk about. In this article (brought to our attention by the amazing author Susan Taylor Chehak): Tim O'Reilly describes why piracy isn't the problem, takes us back to the days of Dickens, and underscores the reasons that access is more important than digital rights management.

In a topic particularly important (we believe) during the digital revolution, Teleread looks at how low-income readers could lose access to books, if we're not mindful about ebook growth.

When publishing an ebook, quality really does matter.

And in case you thought the Library Police could only happen on old Seinfeld re-runs: One Library Sends Police After 5-Year-Old Girl To Tell Her To Pay Up Or Return Two Overdue Books.

Here's what our Seedpod editors have been reading in the new year:

Paint It Black by Janet Fitch Particles And Luck by Louis B. Jones
Writing Space Computers, Hypertext, and the Remediation of Print by Jay David Bolter
