Anytime a member publishes a new book we must absolutely announce it, recognize it and offer accolades! Congratulations, nnendi! I'm looking forward to reading it!
I completely agree with Marieke - this is a great place to announce members' books!! Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Andrea - and big congrats, Nnendi!!
Yesterday, the 14th, was the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps. I am sure that some members of this group first encountered Africa through a connection with the Peace Corps.NPR and other media sources noted the day with stories of JFK in Ann Arbor and stories of those who responded to his call to broaden horizons and outlooks.

Actually, 11/14 was the anniversary of the date on which candidate John F. Kennedy first publicly mentioned the concept of Peace Corps. The official founding of the agency is March 1, 1961. So, Peace Corps considers 3/1/2011 its official 50th birthday.

the Peace Corps can be like my grandparents, who had two wedding anniversaries (one for when they got married and secret and another for when they got married again for public knowledge.)

I've never been in the Peace Corp, but reminds me of all the wonderful Peace Corp veterans who have played a significant role in my life. Bravo!

Oh yes, please do!! That'll be a good excuse to read it! :)
Just in case someone missed this, Canadian author Esi Edugyan [child of Ghanaian immigrants], who was on the Booker shortlist for her second novel, Half Blood Blues, won Canada's prestigious Giller Prize http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainme...

I'll add her to the contemporary lit list for randomizing for future polls. I'm including diaspora lit in those polls.
Marieke wrote: "I did not know this! I'll add her to the contemporary lit list for randomizing for future polls. I'm including diaspora lit in those polls. "Please don't put Edugyan on the list until March; her book doesn't come out in the USA until mid-February, despite all the accolades.
Marieke wrote: "I'll keep that in mind, thanks Jenny!"Thank you! I really want to read it, so I've been checking back on the publishing date from time to time.

I very recently became aware that our fellow member, Richard de Nooy, received some rather nifty recognition for his novel "Six Fang Marks and a Tetanus Shot" in the past year.
He received honorable mention in the English language category from the MNET Literary Awards, recognized from among a record number of entries (130 compared with 87 last year). Please see the details here:

Richard also received the UJ Debut Prize, an award from the University of Johannesburg for creative writing in English. Details can be found here:
