Let's discuss literary elements within the trilogy such as theme, characterization, plot, foreshadowing, symbolism, etc., etc. Can anyone identify a theme for any one of the three books? I've been trying to come up with one, but I can't seem to identify one...

I was thinking, as a theme, something like never give up. No matter how shitty Katniss' situation got, she never really gave up, she just struggled through it. Same goes for all of the other characters. And, the fact that the rebellion succeeded, it really reinforces that.

I absolutely loved the present-tense writing. It felt soo...awesome!

I agree with you, it so cool how we were like in the moment with katniss and we got all of her thoughts.

A lot of the character's names are from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar...like Cinna, Portia, Cato, and Caesar and other names

I love it too! This is going to make me sound very very nerdy, but I think that Ms. Collins probably wrote it this way because, especially in the first two books, Katniss didn't know if she would survive...so, writing in present tense made it so that Katniss could have been killed in the Games had the author wanted it. This way, Katniss was telling the story as it happened, not as though she was looking back on the experience.

Many of the other authors don't know how to write present-tense style and end up making it awkward to read but in this book it felt natural and, well...good!

Also, I have mentioned this in a different discussion, but I notice a lot of symbolism as far as the names go. It seems as though a character's name reflects his personality, hobby, district's industry, etc. For example, Peeta is a baker's son...pita is a type of bread. Thresh is from District 11 where you may thresh wheat, considering they are in charge of agriculture. Glimmer and Marvel are from 1 where they create luxury items which may glimmer and that you marvel at. Finally, Katniss hunts and knows a lot about edible plants...katniss is a wild plant that is obviously edible. Just some stuff I've thought about while reading the books.

The author obviously put some serious thinking into her character's names, personalities, etc. because she wasn't random with the characteristics, as we see some authors do. Almost everything about the character could be brought back to the character's background or personality or way of thinking.
