Books2Movies Club discussion

Every moviegoer and booklover has his own taste in movies and books. Some do not like sword and sorcery books and movies, some do not like dramas and romances. Well, in this club we wish to give our members each month an opportunity to explore different genres, subjects and moods of the books and movies selected.

Year will be divided into ten categories and two random picks in which obviously you may nominate whichever book you wish. Also, notice that many examples mentioned below may be nominated in two or even more categories.

So, the categories - with some examples that might inspire you - are:

1. Epic and Historical Fiction

(Ben-Hur, The English Patient, The Age of Innocence, The Count of Monte Cristo, Doctor Zhivago, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Passage to India, Quo Vadis, Girl With a Pearl Earring)

2. Fantasy and Science Fiction

(2001: A Space Odyssey, A Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, The Time Machine, Neverwhere, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?)

3. Non Fiction and Biopics

(In Cold Blood, Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph, Awakenings, Papillon, Amazing Grace, Out of Africa, Ned Kelly)

4. Mystery Fiction and Thrillers

(The Big Sleep, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Black Dahlia, Death on the Nile, The Lovely Bones)

5. Horror Fiction

(Jaws, The Mist, Who Goes There?, Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Gray)

6. Classics

(Around the World in Eighty Days, Mrs. Dalloway, Middlemarch, Moby-Dick, The Three Musketeers, Anna Karenina, The Phantom of the Opera)

7. War and Western Fiction

(True Grit, Riders of the Purple Sage, Lonesome Dove, Empire of the Sun, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Last of the Mohicans, Atonement)

8. Romances and Dramas

(The French Lieutenant's Woman, Pride and Prejudice, The Bridges of Madison County, Possession, Water for Elephants)

9. Children and Young Adult

(A Walk to Remember, Treasure Island, Black Beauty, The Jungle Books, Oliver Twist, Ella Enchanted, Coraline, Watership Down)

10. Humorous Fiction

(The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Red Dwarf, Forrest Gump)

Random Choice

This one may include books that do not have necessarily to be made into the movies and series, but may be linked to the magic screen somehow. For an example, Walt Disney An American Original, Full Circle, or David Attenborough: Life on Air.

The 10 Best Movies Adapted from Memoirs

Do we have a topic for like plays or non-fiction adapted into movies? Like for instance as said above memoirs (for non fiction) like We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Change Their Lives Forever or A Beautiful Mind. And as for plays there are many made into films: Pygmalion, Twelve Angry Men, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof etc.

Hi Jonathan! Your suggestions are really interesting - movies were really good, so would be great to read the books and plays as well.

We do not have specific topic about non-fiction books and movies in general (you may open one if you like), but they may be nominated for reading, in Monthly Reads Nominations. February is dedicated to war/western fiction (the only one left unconquered ;), but there are some good non-fiction books related to these genres too. In any case, I'll open in the next few days a genre poll for the following two months.

Plays we decided to put with Quick Reads - we have already a bunch of them nominated (see this link), but interesting, not a single has won the round yet :o QR nominations are closed now, till mid-February I think, when you may bring any of your suggestions to our attention again :)

1. Does the numbering of the genre list correspond to the month? For example War and Western is # 7 (does that mean July?)
2. Is the sequence the same evert year?

Hi Nancy, the numbering isn't fixed and the sequence is always different. Thrice a year we do a poll in which our votes decide genres that will be next. Our last poll was this one:
The Third Genre Poll of 2019

We are now onto romances for October, the next will be war and western, and the last one, right for December, will be a random choice. It doesn't matter actually the order in which we do those genres, voting just seems a fun way to make decisions :)

Thank you for explaining how genre selection works, etc. Is there an existing thread for War and Westerns? OR will a notification be broadcast to members when the nominstions for that genre start?
I am probably being dense (or as the Brits say "thick").

Don't worry Nancy, I am glad you asked! It's difficult even to me to navigate our threads. I am telling myself every day I must do some cleanup. Well, I'll probably do it one day.. eventually :)

As for your question, we used to have threads open every single month, but now we have a single thread for each genre instead. It is now so much easier to track what's nominated and what's not read yet. Not to mention that now one can nominate a book appropriate for one particular genre even ahead of time, just because one might forget it till then :)

Of course, when time comes for each genre, I do broadcasts, just to remind members that they can now officially put their nominations in.

I've just edited the first post and added links to our nominations threads that belong to each genre. The only one without a link is War and Western, I'll open it this October.
