Was Dylan Random?

Dylan seems to just pop up out of no where. There was no foreshadowing of him in the series. I kind of think Patterson just sort of like "I have no clue, where to go from here... Hm, lets throw in a completely random and pointless love triangle." Patterson pushed Max and Fang to be together for the 5 books of the series, making them seem like they were "perfect" for each other, than all of a sudden they're a terrible couple and she's perfect for Dylan.

There was even a part in "Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports" where the "voice" teased Max the her and Fang were "Crazy about each other," but after Dylan shows up the "voice" insists that they are perfect for each other and that she should get over Fang.

I don't know, everything seems so random, I don't see how it was possibly planned from the beginning. I think, that after Fang and Max got together, he didn't a sub-plot for them, so he just decided, last minute to add Dylan, but maybe I'm wrong.. I don't know.. Haha

Samuel Finley I don't know why he did it or if it was planned, but Maximum Ride has always seemed to concentrate on the romance too much. I could care less about what Max and Fang are up to while the others aren't even being mentioned. The romance never really brought the story anywhere, to me, and just annoyed me. It was a side thing that took over the story. Adding Dylan just made it even more annoying, because then it added the pointless, annoying as hell, "boy-fights" over Max.

Nicole I actually love the romance in the story, because, hey, that's just me. But, I am thinking that Dylan was random because he was made in a lab. He was just born, so there was no foreshadowing. But I really think Fang and Max will stay together because Max's voice said that she and Fang are soul-mates. Sure Dylan was created for her, and is perfect, but sometimes perfection is the biggest flaw.

True....

Rachel Alice This was originally supposed to be a trilogy, so after the Itex plot played out, there weren't very many logical directions for the story to go. Personally, I think that the first three were by far the best, and they got a little silly after that. Did anyone notice how Dylan's personality changed completely from Fang to Angel? He was sort of lost and pathetic and I kind of felt sorry for him, but then he became kind of weird and snarky.

Samantha Rizzuti snarky?

Kayla Snarky.

Allison i think he was a last resort for some last action. i think Patterson knew he was loosing steam on the whole series so he added this dylan guy as a last resort to hold on to what he had in Max and her flock.

I didnt like dylan and i still dont

Agreed.

Blujeanbooks96 I know it was completely suspicious, random, annoying, un-called-for and contradictory, but I guess we have to trust Mr Patterson and just trust he knows what the hell he's doing.

Rahel Abraham yeah dylan was completely random but a lot of the book is sooo yeah i thought dylan was okay

Abby ya he seems a little random, but with out him the story wouldn't be the same. But ya he seemed a little random.

Nichole I was upset when Dylan showed up. As if there weren't enough pointless, unexplained plot twists already, here's a guy who has no point in the story. I loved the first three books, and as much as i love the characters James Patterson should have stopped at three.

rachel ~ trans rights are human rights Everything after Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports is random. Everything.

Simplyminali he was random. but it was kinda funny how he was supposed to have kids with max

Emma i hate dylan, but i don't think it was super random that he came. what was random was that all of a sudden in the middle of the series, they start trying to save the world from global warming. is it just me, or should they be saving the world from something else more interesting for the plotline of a book?
