Joseph | 1651 comments Did you see the movie? Did you read the book? How did they compare? How did the movie stand on its own?

message 2: by Jon (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I have the DVD. My daughter and I watch it once a year or so (just like we always watch Muppet Christmas Carol each Christmas season).

I saw the movies many years (repeatedly) before I ever read the book. I think it compares well to the book and stands well on it's own. In some ways, I prefer to watch the movie (but that could just be me getting lazy in my old age).

Shannon I think they are similar to the Princess Bride book/movie pairing. The movie follows the book fairly well, although there are enough differences that neither replaces the other. The books are really fun to read, and the movies are well done and enough like the book that they're good for a quick fix.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 47 comments I love this movie. I still need to read the book.

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I really liked the movie, but I still prefer the book. From what I remember, I imagined Schmendrick looking differently in the book vs movie.

It's been more years than I care to remember since I saw the movie but I remember enjoying it. I just watched the movie trailer on youtube & there is quite a bit I do not remember so I am looking forward to reading the book.

Catherine | 17 comments In the back of the book that I read from the library it said that he wrote the screenplay for the movie as well. I found that the book and movie were very similar!

Megan (megancallaway) I haven't seen the the movie since I was little, and while I don't remember much of the plot, I do remember feeling very frightened! I think that memory may be ruining the book for me because I keep expecting things to be a lot darker and grander than they seem to my grown-up self now. But I definitely want to watch it again when I finish reading.

Bryanruss Like a few of you, I watched this movie as a kid and absolutely loved it. I also remember being terrified by it! :) Even thinking about it now gives me goosebumps.

Not having realised this was also a book until recently, I fully intend to read this as soon as possible. It will be nice to read something that not only transports me to another world, but also back in time to my childhood. Is 28 years old too young to be able feel nostalgic? :)

Nah. Not too young at all.

Annie (ziggystardust) Watched the film with my 3 yr old daughter yesterday, I didn't have time to read the book this month. She loved it. I thought it was ok. Mia Farrow's whiny voice as the unicorn annoyed the crap out of me, however.

Becky Haha. I own the collectors edition, truly loved that movie as a child. Mia's voice didn't bother me then, but it does now. So does that creepy alcoholic skeleton lol.

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I watched it, too. Not annoyed, just a little bored, although it was nice. I'm sure if I were still a kid, I'd love it.

Margot (freezebaby) Watched the movie constantly as a kid. Know most of the dialogue by heart because I've watched it so much. That said, both the scenes and the dialogue stick pretty closely to the book. But I do think that the movie manages to improve on the book in parts, trimming dialogue where needed and expanding certain scenes and events. You get a better feel for the characters, I think. And I do love the artwork and music.

Lo Hey guys this is great! They have The Last Unicorn showing and Peter S. Beagle is going to be there!! Woot! The event from Newport Beach Film Festival is going to have a Q&A.

I love this movie so much! Especially the visual elements of it! It's pretty amazing how closely how they stay true to the book and gives the gist of the story. My favorite character is the magician, what about you guys?
