I've started this book four times in three years, but something always interrupts me and I drop it. Hopefully, that won't be the case this time.
I'm 1/3 of the way through this and am really enjoying it. The constant introduction of new characters is a little difficult to keep up with, and deciding which ones are major, which ones are minor (and can be forgotten), and which ones seem minor but are likely to make a return appearance has become a bit of a game for me. Overall, I like the shifting perspectives and the multiple story lines, but with 4+ more books already out in the series I have concerns that it will all become a never ending, tedious ordeal before it's all over.
Thanks for the heads up on this, Jim. I haven't started it yet, but with the Nook, I think I'll start notes and bookmarks to track the characters. Or, even easier, I might just keep my browser open to shelfari.com. Apparently, there are 331 characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Shelfari is good at listing the characters with a short description.) I'm going to need a roadmap!
Is this the proper forum thread for discussions? Do we have an etiquette for dealing with spoilers? I've finished the book and would love to hear what others have to say, but so far there's little more than crickets here.
This is the right thread for discussion, but you are rignt; we are mostly "crickets!" There are no particular rules for discussion, so feel free to start commenting in any way that you would like. I would suggest, however, that you label a spoiler so we can skip the spoiler if we so choose. Maybe even something as simple as: **** SPOILER ALERT**** If anyone knows the actual way to hide a comment because of spoilers, I'd be interested in hearing it. . . .
I just started the book yesterday, am desperately wishing I had more time to read right now, and am hopeful for the weekend!

Ah, to hide spoilers you simply wrap them in <_spoiler> and tags (leave out the underscores I added to make the tags show up). Then it looks like this: (view spoiler).
I am really enjoying this book. I am 2/3 of the way done. I am slos finiding it hard to keep track of each character. It is starting to get easier, but with so many I think I might never have them all straight.
Nook Tablet has a Games of Thrones app. The app helps keep track of the characters, maps and other helpful information. It also has spoiler settings based on what book your are reading. I am on the 3rd book I refer to it often to keep up with the characters. I love how the chapters are written with the different character's voices.
I think I might be one of few who read this book for February. I almost gave up on it after the first few chapters, but stuck with it and am glad I did. I wrote a more lengthy review under the book, but wanted to write here that the book was more mentally involved that I expected. I like to be challenged during a book to think ahead to see if the characters or situations play out as I guessed. Sometimes I had it right and sometimes I just had to shake my head at the ingenuity of the author in how he drew the pictures. If anyone wants to try the book, get ready for a lot of action, politcal intrigue and an emotional connection to some of the characters. You need to be mentally ready for this book as it is not light reading. To do the author justice, you have to prepare yourself for an involved book.
I'm only about 1/2 way through as it has been a busy month. But I am very much enjoying this book, often find I have to keep my Shelfari page open to track the characters. I'm wanting to read the next books in the series, so I think I'll cave and buy the app. Thanks for letting us know about this, Mgray.

Mgray wrote: "...I love how the chapters are written with the different character's voices..."I liked this as well. With the multiple plot lines running throughout, I thought it gave the author a lot more room to explore the characters and their motives, especially since none of them seem to trust anyone else (usually for good reason).
I will definitely be continuing the series. I haven't followed a series since I made my way about halfway through the rabbit hole that is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I'm looking forward to seeing if Martin can keep my interest through 5 books (so far).
I finished the 3rd book - finally! I keep changing my mind about which charcaters I like and which ones I really hate and then I am surprised. I decided I needed to take a break before I started the 4th book, and started the Leftovers because it was the March book. I am mostly feeling withdrawls from AGOT and really not liking Leftovers, but I cannot decide if it is the story or the BLAH characters.
