Nikola tegeltija | 7 comments Ch. 5-8
Chapter Interactions
1. Imagery – In the beginning of chapter 8 it says “During the night, Flora Baumbach’s itsy-bitsy snowflings raged into a blizzard.” This appeal to the sense of touch because it is probably extremely cold and you could probably feel the cold. Also it later said there was 15 feet of snow and you can feel and touch snow.
2. Connection- Denton Deere is a medical intern who keeps diagnosing people to impress others. My sister is about to start residency at a Michigan hospital for internal medicine and she does diagnose people but not to impress them.
3. Imagery- In the start of chapter 5 Sixteen Heirs it called the sky “The Marbled Sky lay heavy on the gray Great Lake”. This appeals to the sense of sight, because it tells the color and of the sky, how it looks, and the color of the Great Lake.
4. Figures of Speech- On page 39 it said “The slow procession looked like some ancient, mysterious rite partner sought partner.” this is metaphor because it wasn’t ancient.
5. Plot Elements- The exposition includes the settings which are sunset towers, the room where the will was read, and the game room. The background information was given when the pairs were given and we learned the characters position.
Vocabulary
1. His ability to walk was relinquished because his spine was damaged.
2. The detective’s scrutiny was almost over and his had his culprit.
3. His feeling of reverence was gone and he wasn’t in awe.
4. The sailors were singing a jaunty song and were self-confident.
5. The country club is full of pompous jerks who had exaggerated dignity.
6. When the toddler fell she was shrewd and cried a lot.
7. When he moved his rook his opponent moved his pawn, to use to win.
8. Many comedians today are minstrels because they sing.
Clues:
Ch. 1-4
Chapter Interaction
1. Plot element- The exposition includes the settings which is a high rise apartment building on the shores of Lake Michigan. This would make it in a town somewhere in the Midwest and should be fairly similar to where we live. The background info.
2. Imagery- In chapter 2 it states “ A cold, raw wind whipped dead leaves about the ankles of the four people grouped in the Sunset Towers driveway but none of them shivered. Not yet” This passage appeals to the sense of touch; you can almost feel the cold. It also implies that there will be a reason for them to shiver later on and creates suspense. I’m guessing that it is not from the cold but from something that may scare them.
3. Connection- When they first see smoke coming from the westing house the kids imagine old man Westing still in his house. “They say his body is sprawled out on a fancy oriental rug, and his flesh is rotting off those mean bones and maggots are creeping in his eyes and crawling out his nose” This reminds me of “Bugs on the Beat”. If this were case, they could find out how long the body has been dead by the bugs they find on the corpse!
4. Suspense- In chapter 2 they set a spooky mood by telling the story of the boys taking the dare on Halloween and ending up in the state asylum. This creates suspense by making the Westing house seem pretty evil.
5. Plot element-The inciting incident occurs in chapter 4. Here, Turtle discovers the dead body of Sam Westing. The mystery (main conflict) is to discover who killed him. We also need to discover the connections between the characters
Vocabulary
1. The wood on the deck became warped and twisted out of shape.
2. The kids were trespassing on his lawn to get the ball and he was angry.
3. The girl tried to deal with her sadness but couldn’t Grapple.
4. His mouth was gaping open while he was chewing.
5. The girl was really gaunt so she could fit into all the tight places.
6. The necklace was marred so it cost less than others.
7. The executor handled the estate very nicely.
8. Even though she didn’t receive that much she was still beneficiary.

Nikola tegeltija | 7 comments Nikola Tesla
Harnessing Electricity
Lisa Yount

By:
Nikola Tegeltija

From a fascination with electricity to creating a whole alternating current system, Nikola Tesla achieved his dreams through perseverance and ambition. Even though he was born in a small village in Croatia and wasn’t thought that much of but he didn’t let that stand in his way. When he attended Higher Real Gymnasium (High School) he caught a physical illness that almost killed him and malaria but he studied hard and finished in three years instead of four. These are just a few of the obstacles that Nikola Tesla had to overcome to achieve his goal. That is why I admire Nikola Tesla; he had a drive that most people don’t have.

One of the main reasons why I admire Nikola Tesla is because he is very persistent with his goal. Like when Tesla was broke and no one would fund him, instead of giving up he invented the Bladeless Turbine which helped him receive funds to complete his dream of transmitting messages across the world. Or when Tesla arrived in the U.S with only 4 cents on his pocket and spent a year ditch digging to gain money to begin his projects. Or when Tesla was heading for New York and his belongings and ticket was stolen so he spent all his remaining money buying new tickets just for a chance at his dream. Also the book states “Tesla stepped up his efforts to obtain funding for the next several years” pg. 76, this shows that Tesla was persistent with his goal. That is just one of the main reasons I admire Nikola Tesla.

Another main reason why I admire Nikola Tesla would be his intelligence. An example of his intelligence would be when he invented an insect-powered motor at the young age of nine. Another example would be when Nikola Tesla did so well that he finished High School in just three years instead of four years. But the best example would be his career, Tesla developed a completely new electricity system that we still use and he also formed the basis for modern cell phones and radios. The book even states that “During his first year, he took about twice as many courses as he was required to do and excelled in all of them.” Pg. 9.That is another main reason why I admire Nikola Tesla.

Nikola Tesla’s ambition is the last and most important reason why I admire him. As I said before, he was born in a small village called Smiljan that is now in Croatia but he still accomplished his dream of being an inventor. In Smiljan, young Tesla also dreamed of harnessing the power of Niagara Falls and creating electricity from it, this made some people call him crazy but he does do that in later years he does exactly that. The book even states “he told an uncle, that one day he would use a huge wheel to make Niagara Falls produce electric power. About 30 years later, he made his vision come true” Pg. 6.But as Tesla grew older however, his dreams became more and more out of reach, (and costly) like the wireless communications empire, (that we do have today) his death ray, and even robot. Even though Tesla lacked the money he needed to produce these things he did have all the plans, which shows his ambition in his dreams. Like pg. 76 said “Turning dreams to reality can be expensive and difficult but Tesla already completed the designs” That explains the last and most important main reason why I admire Nikola Tesla his ambition.

Overall in this essay I said that I admired Nikola Tesla for the unique drive he possessed and other things like his perseverance, brilliance and ambition. I gave support and quotes for each of these reasons and while writing this I realize how different I world would be without people like Nikola Tesla. We wouldn’t have electricity and many other things without Nikola Tesla, and so I really admire him and everything he did for the world.

Between 1800 and 1850, the northern and southern parts of the United States were becoming more and more divided. As the south became more agricultural and dependent on slavery, the north focus more on business and industry and mostly abolished slavery. These changes set the stage for the civil war that followed. How is the transportation and economy of the north different and similar with the transportation and economy of the south?

The transportation of the entire United States was mostly river based because of the steam boat but the invention of the train followed. The north decided to use trains as their main means of transportation because they didn’t need rivers. But in the south, the steam boat continued to be the main form of transportation since the south had many more streams and rivers than the north. Though they weren’t too different, the steam boat was still popular along rivers in the north and the south had 10,000 miles of railroad set, half of railroads in the north. Europe was also slightly divided on this front at the time because the industrial revolution brought about changes throughout the entire world. Also this difference of trains to boats aided the north since they could move troop and supplies anywhere they were needed.

The economy of the north and south was growing more and more different as time passed on. The north pursued manufacturing, industry, and business as a basis for their economy and this made the north much more rich and powerful than the south. The south however decided to have an almost completely agricultural economy but they grew cash crops, like cotton, and used slaves. Some similarities are that the north still had a lot of farms it’s just they grew crops to just feed themselves and the south had manufacturing and industry it just paled in comparison to the north. All around the world this happened, some countries chose to embrace the industrial revolution and profit from it and other countries chose to improve farming and remain agriculturally based. Since the north was much more rich and powerful than the south, due to its industry, it began the war with impressive strengths like larger population, more money, and being more technically advanced.

The differences and similarities of the northern and southern United States before the civil war matters because it lets us see how a civil war was possible for a democratic country with equal rights, for white men.

Part I
A: There have been 13 deaths in this section of Limestone Ridge road in the past 10 years.
B: The percentage of the amount of people killed by cancer is 69%
The percentage of the amount of people killed by heart attack is 15%
C: The environmental factors that could influence cancer are the sun, which could cause skin cancer, and the pollution from the plastic plant.
D: If I lived in that area I would stop using pesticides which have simazine, alachlor,
E: Alachlor is a pesticide from the chloroacetanilide family. It can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, spleen, and can cause cancer from lifetime exposure.
Simazine is a pesticide formed from triazine. It can cause problems with your blood if exposed in excess for many years.
Nitrate is a salt or ester of nitric acid, containing the anion NO3-. Nitrate can cause “Blue Baby Syndrome” to babies under 6 months old.
Methoxychlor is an organochlorine used as an insecticide. It is not classified as a carcinogen but it can cause central nervous depression, diarrhea, and damage to liver, kidney, and heart.
Hexachlorobenzene is a chlorocarbon used as a fungicide and for seed treatment. It is a carcinogen for animals and a probable human carcinogen.
F: The wells in the neighborhood were about 45 feet deep and drilled into a sandstone aquifer.
G: The groundwater flows east.
I know this because I know there is a stream that exits a cave in the east and I know that there is a river to the southwest where the stream runs into its center. Since all of this information suggests that the stream flows east, that is what I believe. I also believe that the groundwater flows with the stream.
