The trouble with Palin's books to me would be which country to count them for, as he spends a few hours, days, or maybe a week per country as he's travelling through each country.

Don't Tell Mum I Work On The Rigs, She Thinks I'm A Piano Player In A Whorehouse - a fun non-fiction book (the immature kind of fun) about a freelance oil rigger who works in various places around the world. The book in not as much about his job as it is about the people he meets and the experiences he has. Silly, but entertaining.

A Summer In Europe by Marilyn Brant

Have not read this, I just bought a 2nd hand copy of it and thought I'd share.

I think this book would qualify: "Walking for Peace, an inner journey"


It's the true story of my and my Spanish husband's 3100-mile, 13-country, 13-month walk for peace. It is less of a travelogue and more of an intimate portrayal of the struggles (and triumphs) of two people who are trying to do some constructive for peace, and who believe that to create peace in the world, you have to begin by creating it within your own heart first. It's very much an inner journey wrapped up in the context of an outer adventure.

One of my favorite Around the World books is A Fortune-Teller Told Me: Earthbound Travels in the Far East.
He is a journalist and decides to travel overland, mostly in various places of Southeast Asia, visiting fortune tellers along the way after one of them told him he would die in a plane crash if he flew in a certain year.

My mum says this is the best travel book of all time….



Just saying.

If somebody is interested in a lot of states of the Caucasus I would suggest Goodnight, Mr. Lenin: A Journey Through the End of the Soviet Empire.
But it is non-ficition and the author talks above all about the historical, political and economical situation. There are also some hints to legends and monuments and there are at least two chapters for every region like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Taijikistan, Kasakhstan, Kyrgyzstan. I liked the book and it was interesting but I know that not everybody likes non-fiction.

Thanks for posting. I love non-fiction and am currently looking for anything decent about Kazakhstan, so I've added this to my list!

I hope you will like it. Remember that it isn't only about Kazakhstan! The whole book is a travel from the river Amur to Moscow though the author writes above all about the regions of the Caucasus.

That's ok, too - it gives the country context within the region, so I look forward to it.

you could try Woman in Exile: My Life in Kazakhstan - it is a memoir about her life in Kazah - I read it a year or so ago

A journey through Asia: A Fortune-Teller Told Me: Earthbound Travels in the Far East by Tiziano Terzani.

The author's journey starts from Thailand and he goes to Laos, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, Cambodia, Vietnam; then he makes a long trip with the train from Mongolia crossing Russia in order to arrive in Italy. From here he goes to England, Germany, again Italy where he takes a ship to Singapore; then again to Burma in order to arrive again in Thailand where he lived.

In bold the places about which he writes more. It is an amazing book!

Besides the magazine National Geographic Travel, is there any other magazines that are helpful to learn about different countries?

There are lots of good travel magazines, I like 'Afar' a lot. Conde Nast Traveller and Travel & Leisure are Ok, but they focus too much on shopping for my taste.

Try the cooking magazine 'Saveur', it includes a lot of cultural info. Or 'La Cucina Italiana' for Italy.

There are also a lot of good travel bloggers. Check out the Wordpress home page and then just search for travel blogs. Blogs can be more personal than magazines sometimes.
