Katherine | 187 comments Wendy, Sorry but have you checked out the author you selected for Ireland. I'm from Ireland and I have never even heard of him. Try Tana French or Gerard O'Donovan. At least they write books

message 6: by Charlotte (Buried in Books) (last edited Apr 27, 2013 02:27AM) (new)

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Ian Sansom's from England. But the book is based in Ireland and I thought the challenge was about where the book is based.

So it's all good Wendy!!!

I grew tired of the series after maybe #3

Kent Sievers (kentsageek) Scrolling through the posts, it appears that mystery/thrillers set in Nebraska are hard to find. Hope I'm not overstepping to suggest-

message 10: by Gary (new)

Gary Van Cott | 187 comments I have been on Johnston Atoll. It was for 24 hours in the early 1980s. It was just military and contractors there. I thought it was a very strange place. It reminded me of the movie Outland, partly because of the rent-a-cop security. One of our party ended up in a cell for the night. Because of its isolation, it would actually be a good setting for a mystery if you could find someone who was really familiar with it. Wikipedia says it was closed in 2004.

Wendy | 581 comments As I have to wait inpatiently for another book to come out. (May) I begin again my UN Challenge.
My UN Challenge is to read as many books from as many countries, their territories as possible. I acknowledge is is unlikely this challenge will be ever completed because of all the mutiple political unrest, and conservative counties out there.
Also, I have to mostly limit myself to books from the library due to limited space and an addictive book habit. Unless I win the lottery, then skies the limit.

Gary Van Cott | 187 comments Wendy wrote: "It actually took about two years, but I am done with the US Challenge. Included are: DC, American Solomon Islands ..."

Do you mean American Samoa? I don't think the Solomon Islands have ever been US territory although there was fighting in them during World War II.

Wendy | 581 comments Jamaica, The Man Who Turned Both Cheeks: A Novel Gillian Royes This had a very very minor mystery. I am not counting this under my World Countries Challenge. It brings up Jamaica's very serious prejudices against homosexuality.

I'm going to use your list of countries, Wendy! Sorry I didn't comment earlier, but I've been away on vacation.

message 19: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments I made up my own list because I recognized that the original list was too limited. As with the US, Canada, Australia and the UK are too diverse to dedicate to one book. The challenge for me is parts of Africa Mid-East have no mystery/suspense books at all. Also,I am not really into reading about warlike conflicts which can limit my search.

message 20: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments I am updating my challenge via above list because when you cut and paste you lose the touchstones. I am not going to touchstone each and every time I cut and paste.

if you hit "edit", you can then copy what is in the box.
You can then cancel the edit, and then paste in a new message and you keep all of the tags and stuff.

Wendy | 581 comments I have began a new series, and hope it is a good one. Shamini Flint writes the Inspector Singh series. He is first in Malaysia with the first book then Bali (2nd) and Singapore (3rd). There are a couple others based in Asia, Cambodia, China and India). I am praying these are good because each one will knock off a Country for my Country Challenge.
I had one other series where the main character went all over the world and the books are hit and miss. I loved one and could not finish the other.(Lyn Hamilton Another series was rather dated and almost the character tends to be unrealistic. (Mrs. Pollifax, Dorothy Gilman I am beginning to like Mrs. P., though she ain't Bond or Ms Marple.

Harriet (harrietstay) | 49 comments You've lost me. Can anyone add to "Wendy's" list or is this just Wendy's? It says Group on the top. I realize it started in 2014 but this is the first I've seen this.

message 33: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments It is my personal challenge list for anyone to read, comment or suggest on. Go to this Group's Group Challenges. Some of us created our own "Challenge Topic". A Long time ago, the Moderators brought up the suggestion of a USA State Challenge and an UN Challenge. We were to read a mystery, suspense, thriller book based in each US State or Country from the original UN. I expanded MY challenge by trying to hit every World Country I can. These specific challenges have not had many "hits" lately, but I keep plugging along!

message 34: by Wendy (last edited Feb 27, 2015 07:11PM) (new)

Thomas (tom471) | 2033 comments I'm impressed. If I took this on, is there a time limit? Can I count some books that I have already read?

message 38: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments Thomas, it is a personal challenge with no time limit.

message 39: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments Thomas, if you go to this Group's Challenges, you will see the Original Challenge where readers read books about each original UN member. Some, like me, created their own Post to keep track. I have been "working" on ghis challenge for a long long time. It would be refreshing to see more active members on the challenge.

Thomas (tom471) | 2033 comments Evidently I must start a new thread. How do I do this?

message 41: by Wendy (last edited Jul 10, 2015 11:12PM) (new)

Wendy | 581 comments Stay in Group Challenges. Find "add new topic"- call it Thomas's UN Challenge or whatever you want. I cut and pasted the Countries listed in the original challenge onto that new topic. Oh, I included nioks I had previously read.

Wendy | 581 comments THIS IS A RE-POST FROM WHEN I FINISHED THIS CHALLENGE. I HAVE ADDED THE TOUCHSTONES. I STILL HAVE FOUND BOOKS ON THE TERRITORIES MENTIONED BELOW. I HAVE ALSO DELETED REPETITIVE THREADS IN BOTH THE US AND UN LISTS AS THEY ONLY SUITED MY PERSONAL NEEDS.
It actually took about two years, but I am done with the US Challenge. No book available for Northern Mariana Islands, though there is one in my TBR. Still nada on Guam. MANY HAVE REVIEWS

Wendy | 581 comments Algeria: The First Wave James R. Benn Well, I am going to include this in my UN Challenge. I learned a lot about WW2 and the politics involved in Algeria. What a tangled mess that was!
This is the second Billy Boyle book. Billy's war experiences are already changing him. The US has been in WW2 barely a year and he has already becoming much less naive and much, much more jaded and ruthless.
