VAMPS-R-US discussion

So what do you look for in a vampire? Or should i say what does your type of vampire look like? What traits sould they have? There are ALOT of variances within the the lore! What are 'must haves' and 'have nots' when it comes to our fanged friends???

I'll start!

Vampires should only be able to come out at night.....the sun should burn them! Now i know that older vampires can stand/tolerate the sun after many years of building up an immunity if you would like to call it.....im starting to think this may be okay, but im talking they have to be very very very old!

And yes.....they should NOT sparkle! I like the twilight books and all but damn....sparkle.....really????

ROFLMFAO!!!! They also have very intense sunscreen that may be applied, also prescription medication that can allow them go out in daylight. Without either of those, burn baby burn!

Strong, dangerous, extrememly hard to kill, full on fangs, large.....fangs, ferocious, deadly, beautiful, manevolent, evil, loyal, sneaky, creepy, bloody, tall, elusive, maniacal............

This topic is a bit similar to my Mythology topic, but I'll post anyway...

A Vampire
1.)Has no Soul
2.)Is Immortal
3.)Must Drink Blood
4.)Sleeps in a coffin, in the ground, or hanging upside down like a bat during the day
5.)Cannot go into the Sunlight
6.)Is repelled by and allergic to Garlic
7.)Allergic to Silver (yes that is vampires too, not just werewolves)
8.)Casts no reflection
9.) Needs to be invited in order to enter a person's home by someone who lives there
10.) Has super-human strength
11.) Uses a pair of fangs to drain victim's blood
12.) Is hard to kill
13.) Pale skin
14.) Fears and is hurt by holy items such as crosses,holy water, the Bible, Euchurest wafers,etc.

Okay i have a few more and they go like so....

1.Must drink blood but doesnt have to kill
2.does not infect by just bite alone, blood must be exchanged and then the person dies and is risen a vamp
3.Immortal and hard to kill
4.behedding, silver stake through heart, and burning are the only ways to kill them
5. well and i already mentioned the sunlight
6.uses compulsion/mind influence
7. appealing to the eye (what can i say im a chick and grotesque is not so hot) this i like of my sexed up vamps....evil vamps i guess the more hideous the better but still have to look human in some capacity.

Things that dont bother me that much are as follows....
garlic, holy crosses, reflections, coffins, etc.... well those can be manipulated a bit or omitted for the story to be complete!

Im sure there is more ill think on it more and update!

I have a problem with "sleeps in coffin, in the ground, or hanging upside down." First of all, why do they need to sleep upside down in the first place? Unless you go by the belief that they are somehow related to bats (which I don't). Also, this makes the romantic in me uncomfortable. How can you have a relationship with someone if they're always running off to their coffin afterwards? It's worse then the typical male who turns over and goes to sleep.

Also, the garlic one bothers me. That negates a whole bunch of terrific ethnic foods for romantic meals.

I agree that they have to be pale but beautiful (Rayna puts it so eloquently...I'm a chick and even if the vamp is evil and going to suck me dry or tear me apart, I'd like to be looking at something gorgeous as I die).

I like my vamps to be supernatural but not alien (even though there are some exceptions to my rule like Midnight Breed).

Yes, they also have to be invited in in my world but I don't go for the religious items that repel...that makes a vampire too black and white. I like the idea that there are good vampires and evil vampires that exist simultaneously and battle one another.

laugh.....you kill me RJ! All us girls sure like our pretty dont we? I agree with the concept of good and evil vampires. Just as there are humans that sway both ways vampires must too! Survival of the fittest and all. CAnt have one without the other! Now if you would like to play up the evil vamps looking like something out of 30 days of night i really could care....but if the good vampires are not pretty damn fine id be sorely dissapointed! They have been romanticized so much that, for it it has become the norm!

I guess what one had to ask themselves is what your willing to accept in your reading!

I have read stories.....and they have been good stories mind you.....but certain parts have left sour tastes in my mouth on how vampires have been depicted. i understand an authors need to be different and set themselves apart....but some of it is just to much to take!

Here are a couple examples.......
This one you've heard me say it before.....sparkly vamps is a no no
another is a book that was really good but this part i had trouble with.....when the vamp found its mate and they were in relations with each other the vamps heart would beat....thats right folks he came alive for a brief period (and if that just doesnt get you mind roiling.....hes turned back human in those few short moments) youll have to read it to get my jist i think!

LOL...I just wrote the whole ...sleeping upside down... thing because,in The Lost Boys, they slept hanging upide down in a cave. The first time I saw that when I was a kid, I thought it was pretty cool.

And as far as coffins go, I was sticking to the old classics I suppose. In a lot of the modern stories, they are able to just sleep in a bed. While we're on the subject though; don't you think it's wrong for a vampire who doesn't sleep at all to break into a girl's room in the middle of the night to watch her sleep?

I have no problem with vampires being sexy. And, perhaps there is somthing about a villain being attractive that makes him/her all the more sinster.

I also have no problem with the idea of there being good guy vampires. I liked Spike and Angel, and if you look at my avatar I have a picture of Nick Knight from Forever Knight up there. Also, one of the books we are reading this month is Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Not to spoil anything, but in that story,there are some pretty bad vampires, but at the same time there are some good vampires which help Abe through out the story to fight the evil ones.

There are so many interpretations, and I don't have a problem with an author who wants to slightly bend the rules. The only interpretation that I have a real problem with is the sparkly one.

Oh, I've heard of that one before. I'll have to add it to my list. I have so many other books to read though, so if I do find it, it may be a while before I can get to it.

its the one that has the temporary beating heart. It strays from the norm of vamps. And is a love story to boot, debut book by author!

But i really think you will like this one! Sean Hayden has a very unique outlook on vampires and he's an amazing storyteller! i think i sent this recommend to you before....i strongly suggest you read it!

Yes you did send me a recommendation of that one to me, also I think a while back you also recommended it to me in the Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter thread. I hate to judge a book by it's cover, but the whole pentegram thing kind of freaks me out (even if it's not the satanic pentegram)

I think its wrong for anyone ...vampire or human...to break into someone's bedroom to watch them sleep...even if they are your soulmate.

I agree with observation that it may be even more sinister if evil vampires are attractive...it goes against that whole concept we've been taught by society that good is beautiful and evil is ugly just so we can easily tell the difference.

I have read Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter already and loved it. Gave it to a friend as a gag gift since he's a social studies teacher and hates my obsession with vampires.

Let's pose this question...there seems to be many of you who detest the idea of sparkly vampires ( I don't really care either way; it was more of a plot enabler than anything...and remember, even Edward Cullen agrees with you about the sparkling; he thinks its hideous!)) but how do you feel about the concept of vampires who feed off animals to survive or synthetic blood like in Southern Vampires (True Blood)?

i agree with most everything that everyone has said, but RJ has brought up a good point that i was thinking of just before i read her entry. I believe that there should be no synthetic blood or drinking from blood bags. I think you should have to drink right from the source. I dont mind the animals as much but if a vamp choses to drink animal blood that should only sustain them for a little while they should have to drink human blood from the source to remain immortal, but the dont have to kill their vicims. the should only be nocturnal, use compulsion, super strong and sexy, the older they get the stronger they get, they should have FANGS! They should be made not born. Havent decided if they should reproduce yet or not because technically they are dead so they shouldnt have any alive bodily fluids.

Dont get me wrong I love the dhampire, but I dont know if that is something that I think a vampire should be considered able to do.

ways of death/weaknesses as mentioned before silver, staked through the heart, decapitation, burning, the sun and Were's if they are crazy enough to get that close. lol. I think yall have covered the rest.

well im not opposed to animal blood as a food sourse per say, but synthetic blood and for that matter blood bags are wrong! Food should come from the source.

Am I opposed to a vampire feeding off of animal blood or some synthetic substitute? Absolutley not. like I said before, some can be good and some can be bad. Angel and Spike both fed off of pigs blood. I have heard that pig's blood is genetically similar to human blood. Joss Whedon probably heard the same thing, and that is why he has his vampires with souls get pig's blood from a butcher's shop. Nick Knight fed off of cow's blood, which he kept bottled up in wine bottles and told everyone it was wine. LOL...Skanke thought he had a drinking problem.

Blade, who is half human, half vampire, had to shoot himself up with a synthetic serum which surpressed his thirst and kept him from attacking humans. I thought that was fascinating.

So yeah, I think there can be a handful of good vampires that don't feed on human blood. However the rest of them should feed off of humans.

Here's an interesting comparison; Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. In the beginning of the first book, when Louis becomes a vampire, he doesn't want to kill people. So he feeds off of animal blood (mostly rats)to survive, and Lestat keeps trying to convince him that he has to feed off of humans. Eventually, Louis finds that he has to feed off of human blood. He is stuck with killing and considers it to be Evil. Now, in the rest of the books, most of Rice's vampires only feed off of the "Evil-doer"-rapists and murders. It's like trading in the gas chamber for a pair of fangs. LOL.

Oh, and yes I agree that vampires must have fangs. It really annoys me when they don't!

Okay so here is my list!
Must have fangs- as much as I adore the Twilight series, I was disappointed in the fact that they didn't have fangs. I don't mind the sparkle and thought it brought a new spin on the whole vampire thing nor do I mind the animal drinking. Loved that they have to work to keep the humanity in check- so to speak.
Sunlight- I'm on the fence but really I think there is something sexy about the whole night staker idea. Not that I think stalking is sexy but the whole he's a bad guy thing and bad things happen at night, ya know.
Garlic- they just can't do it;)
Crosses- I'm not sure. I like that they have to suffer because they are supposed to be damned and all so... I guess no crosses too
Coffins- I love the idea of a bed;) (snicker)
They have to sleep- the whole doesn't sleep thing is too much for me
They have to die by stake in the heart- it goes with the whole love thing- for me anyways
ALWAYS goes back to the love 'em or hate 'em, hehe
I'll have to think on others. This is too much fun. I've never been able to chat it up about all things Vampire and I have to say, I am really enjoying it:)

This one is kind of silly, but they should turn to dust (or ash) when they die.

Well, the short story I just wrote- they just died after being staked- so I guess I have to not agree but... I kinda like that... shh;)

That's a tough one...again I'm torn by good vs. evil. If they're evil I want them to age and turn to dust or burn to ashes...but if their good vamps I would like to just see them die a normal death. Of course, that's a double standard; so if I had to I would choose just die a normal death.

im for them turning to ashes in any case either good or bad.

Titanium Alloy??I thought that was werewolves. In "The Howling 2:Striba-Werewolf Bitch", Christophee Lee uses a Titanium stake to kill a werewolf. I'm such a dork. LOL.

In most of today's stories, they have black eyes, which annoys me. It just looks like they have too much of that stuff that the optometrist gives you when you go for an eye exam in thier eyes.

In Stoker's Dracula, they had red eyes "as if the flames of hell burned behind them". I really like that. As far as movies go, there was something about the yellow eyes in The Lost Boys that was just so mysterious and sinister.

I agree...red is much more frightening than yellow...maybe I relate it to traffic signs. You know yellow is caution but we all go through it any way while red is stop or you're going to get splattered...blood and gore and all that.
