Wow I guess I am one of those who assumed the sunlight was part of mythology. learn something new every day :)

Dan your gunna have to lead this one!!! lolI have no idea where all the myths originate from....interestig none the less!
There would be another discussion nosferatu/vampire/vampyre.....potato/patoto

Personally, I found the sunlight thing to be a dissapointment. Yes, Rayna, I'm afraid your right. I may have to lead this. I'm not sure if members really want to go and buy those books I mentioned just to look stuff up for this. There are websites you can go to though. LOL.
I wrote a term paper on this when I was in college and was taking a class in the Occult. I just thought the whole thing was really fascinating.

i agree is very fascinating! we will all go away the more knowledgeable....and maybe even a bit interested in more than just the 'pretty' vampire novels....lolKeep them coming!
how about this little ditty...Vampires burst into flames upon exposure to sunlight
Source: Most likely based on observations of a vampire's extreme reaction to sunlight
Fact: Sunlight renders vampires, with their hyperdilated irises, blind. It also causes neural pathways to fire randomly in the vampire brain, creating an extreme epileptic reaction. As dramatic as this reaction may appear, it will not be enough to start a fire.

Thanks. Oh, and I found that paper I wrote in college that I was talking about, the one on Vampire Mythology. I also found one I wrote on Bram Stoker's research for Dracula.

Well then i guess as soon as Tiff sorts her computer out we will delve into the realm of emo vamps....hmmm which books comes to mind! you know i can see the story liine in my head but the book title escapes me, im a gunna have to ga back to my read folder!

LOL. That would be Riley Jenson series. There was a nest of Emo Vamps that Quinn helped Riley to take down. ;-)

THANK YOU!!!!! i was just going to post that series! It was bugging me and i LOVE that series! We may have to do that one as a series group read later in the year! I think most will like it and if im not mistaking our newbie MODs havent read them yet!

Here's another one!!!Vampires having to be invited into a persons residence!!!!
I have always thought this was a good point and wished it true for all vampires. Even though some authors don't hold this one myth in high regard i think that vampires should have to be invited in and that their invitation can be rescinded at any time. Which then will lead into the subject of sacred ground im sure and other relics like the crosses, garlic, and holy water! crosses....yes only the ones made of silver....garlic....no that one is redundant.....holy water....hmmm well the jury is still out on that one! Should vampires be allowed to visit the church! Well my answer is no they shouldn't....which then would lead into the vampire possessing a soul....laugh i could probably go on forever and link all pieces vampirism is founded on.....but i will regress and get back to invitations!
Maybe would should tackle each one!!!! and then maybe some references from readings to back up our points!!!
So any stories people that have you for or against the theory of invitations???
I agree, I like the idea of a vampire having to be invited into your home. Keeps the bad guys out as well as the sacred ground too! Good point well made Mrs. Rayna;)

Amazon's Kindle Daily Deals is offering a vampire anthology of Victorian shorts that might be interesting for us :Kindle Daily Deal: Dracula's Guest: A Connoisseur's Collection of Victorian Vampire Stories ($1.99)
Before Twilight, vampires haunted popular culture around the world in the nineteenth century. In Dracula’s Guest, Michael Sims gathers the best vampire stories of the Victorian era, a collection that highlights their cultural variety. Sims rounds out the anthology with a chapter omitted from Bram Stoker's legendary 1897 novel, Dracula.

I've seen this book in stores before and it looks pretty good. It's all about the nineteenth century vamps (the ones that could walk in daylight). Since I've just bought Carmilla, The Vampyre, and love Stoker's Dracula so much, I'm all for this book. I'll add it to my TBR list.

      .Creating vampires..
found this ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire)
The causes of vampiric generation were many and varied in original folklore. In Slavic and Chinese traditions, any corpse that was jumped over by an animal, particularly a dog or a cat, was feared to become one of the undead. A body with a wound that had not been treated with boiling water was also at risk. In Russian folklore, vampires were said to have once been witches or people who had rebelled against the Russian Orthodox Church while they were alive.

      Interesting, Bite Me.
I have heard about the cat thing before. Thanks for that. I'll try and come up with some info and post.

Name a legend and talk about the lore behind it. I'll start off.
Sunlight.
Most people think that the idea of vampires burning in the sun came from the mythology. This is not Entirely true. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Count could walk around in the sun. He just couldn't shapshift in it and preferred to sleep in his coffin/box of Earth during the day. The burning to ash in the sunlight started with the 1922 silent film, Nosferatu. The Director, F. W. Murnau basically took the plot from Dracula without the Stoker family's permission, and he came up with the sunlight thing to avoid copyright infringment.
