To begin with, I'm a writer -- been making my living at it for 25+ years. I've published two nonfiction books, which have done well, and I'm proud of them. But the memoir was a whole different kettle of fish.
I've always known I had to write it, ever since I was a kid going through it all. But I couldn't start until my uncle died.
My whole family betrayed us (my brother & me) -- looked the other way while we were abused physically and emotionally. But you have to love someone, and I loved my uncle, who was in many ways good to me. So I never had the heart to start that conversation with him. That stopped me. He died in 2009, aged 96. By that time, the need had been submerged so long that it took me months to wake to the realization. I started slowly, but once things got rolling, it was obvious what needed to happen.
How about you? Is there a book you'd like to write?
