Hope you enjoy Katherine! I read that one in 2010 and liked it very much.

Darkpool It's been right at the top of my "to read" list for more than a year...

Jemidar | 358 comments Katherine is wonderful :-). The Devil's Brood is also one that I'm planning to read (finger's crossed!) this year.

And I love the look of the book covers at the bottom of your lists. Very pretty. I'm going to head off and add some to mine!

Hannah (hannahr) I third the love for Katherine. After reading it, John of Gaunt became a historical "crush" :)

Darkpool Ooohhh... even more incentive!

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I have both Katherine and Devil's Brood in my TBR pile, although the Katherine pb is going through a de-smelling process with kitty litter to get read of the cigarette smoke odor.

Darkpool, what did you think of Tea with the Black Dragon? It's one both Ron and I have in our shared TBR pile.

Lee (leekat) Darkpool, I love the name of your challenge. I need a better one for mine!

I liked it well enough, although I only gave it 3 stars. It's one of those books that has been in my consciousness forever - I remember standing in a bookshop holding a copy when it must have been quite new out. Clearly I decided not to buy it at the time! The use of language is quite delicious and poetic in style. I felt it was showing its age somewhat, as any book featuring cutting edge computing tends to do - what is gee-whiz at time of publishing becomes quaint after a period of several decades, and I think this distorted the intended overall tone of the novel for me.
Bottom line: I'm really pleased I've read it: it was quick, interesting and enjoyable, but maybe also a little dated.

I guess I should go paste this into the review box now...!

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Thanks, you summed up are interest in it. We've had a copy of the book for a few years now. I remember picking it up and almost reading it last year but the computer technology did hold me back. Is is a large or important factor, or small and minor? I'm hoping for the latter.

BTW, I agree with Lee about your challenge name. So many of you have come up with such clever ones. Ours isn't so great either.

Darkpool :-) I don't know... the idea of a furry challenge is kinda fascinating...

The computer stuff really isn't so important. It's really just the context for the important stuff. And the writing really did strike me a particularly lyrical and fabulous in parts, so probably worth reading for that alone.
(Bother; seized with a desire to hold the book in my hands while I'm thinking about what to say, I've stomped all over the house looking for the darned thing, and can't find it. Wonder who I've pressed it on.)

Darkpool PROGRESS!!!!
I've decided to make this the post that lists where I'm up to, and that I can update as I go. I know it's a silly place to put it, not being at the top of my thread. Nevertheless...

Darkpool Well, I suppose I'd better update with my (lack of) progress over the latter 3/4 of the year... I have indeed read both Devil's Brood and The Time it Takes to Fall, and I'm almost 1/3 of the way through Katherine (will be finished before the end of December without a doubt). But that's all. My final score will be 6 out of 12. Trying again next year...
