I read this when I was in high-school and have no interest in rereading it now. The Tolkien books are pretty much consider the apex of classic fantasy and after Lord Of The Rings came out on the big screen I'm pretty sure this has been read by most. I'd rather get to lesser known classic fantasy or scifi. And considering Tolkien's popularity I'd say that would be almost any other book. If we do go this route I'd most likely not be reading with the group. Too much out there in need of reading for me to revisit something I know so well. I wouldn't blame the group for picking it but I just won't be rereading it.
My 2 cents.
My only point was to either do it soon or skip it.Waiting till its the fad of the moment seems kind of silly.
I almost never re-read a book so I'm ambivalent on this one.

Understood. And my point was basically that I vote skip. :-)
It is aimed at a much younger audience than most of the S&L members.
Great book to read to your kids or to read as a kid.
It's a bit of a let down if you think you a getting more of "The Lord of the Rings"

Unlike the Golden Compass or Watership Down.So I guess the Tom Swift series is out too.
;-}
Anything new would be fine by me.

I read it for the first time as an adult, and was surprised at how adult it actually was.

If it goes like with past movies
Just before "An Unexpected Journey" comes out
expect copies of the book to disappear from the used book store.
The price of ebook versions to go up and
the "new and improved" hard copy version to be more expensive.
Blame Sauron.
