Regret


My father died at the age of 56. No one knows how he died, or why, but that it was in his sleep. I am his daughter, Ashley. I am currently 17 years old, and I will graduate from high school this year. He died just over a year ago. I have been living with my widowed mother ever since then, as an only child, remembering the haunting memory of that night…

He was a busy man, always seen on his phone, talking to one of his coworkers. While growing up, I always tried to show him the drawing that I had drawn for him, but he always rejected them and told me to show him later. Whenever I performed a song that I had been practicing for months at the piano recital, I would always scan the crowed quickly before I started and looked for Daddy. He was never there.

Another time, I had studied weeks for a math final in 10th grade. I had stayed up the entire night before to make sure I could remember everything that I needed to know. When I took the test, I remembered everything that I had studied and turned it in with a smile on my face. A day later, I got the test back with a 97 circled in red on the top, showing off my hard work. I drove quickly home and burst through the door, wanting to share the news with my parents. Apparently, my mother wasn’t home right then because I only found my dad in the dining room, texting on his phone. This is how the conversation went:

“Dad! Dad! Guess what?”
The only sound he made was the soft tap tap of his fingers on his phone.
“I got a 97 on my math final!”
I waited for him to reply, but he never did, so I built up the courage and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
“Hmm? What sweetie? I’m busy.”
“No…Dad, I said I got a 97 on my math…” I didn’t even finish, he had his eyes glued to the screen, never seeming to stop moving his fingers.
Finally beat, I took out my cell phone and texted him instead. Dad, I got 97 on my math final.
He stopped for a second and looked up at me and simply replied, “Why didn’t you get 100?”

Ever since that conversation, I began to notice exactly how much he was absorbed in his work, not his daughter. It hurt me, I could feel the empty void inside myself, knowing that he probably didn’t even notice me, let alone care or even love me. That’s when I started avoiding him, not really sharing a funny experience that happened at school, or who I was going to the Dance with.

Then, it was the night before he died…

I remember that night like it was yesterday. It was in the middle of 11th grade, and a guy that I had had a crush on since 3rd grade had asked me out. I was nervous and needed a man’s advice. I didn’t have any brothers, so I was forced to talk to my father. I knew tension had built between us, you could read the worry in Mother’s eyes. She wanted a happy family that got along with each other, and I had told her time and time again, it wasn’t my fault, he was too absorbed in his work. But I had to push this aside, this was a big moment in my life, and I wanted it to be the best it could be.

I shook off those thoughts, and hastily entered the family room. There was Dad, sitting on the couch, eyes locked on his phone, while keeping the soft hum of the television in the background. I smiled at him when he looked up at me. He quickly looked back down at his phone, eyebrows knit together. “What is it Ashley?”
I paused for a moment, wondering what I was going to say. Cool down Ashley, just ask him the question, maybe he‘ll listen then. I agreed with my reasoning and replied, “Dad, I need some advice.” He glanced up at me again, having a puzzling look on his face.
“What do you need advice about?”
“Well, I have had this crush on this boy since 3rd grade, and he asked me out yesterday.”
He raised one eyebrow, knowing where this was going. “Can we talk about this later? I have an important call coming in any minute, and I need to be able to take it.”
I stood there, suddenly remembering all the things he had not been there for, all the times he had hurt me. And it all came tumbling out of my mouth against my own will, “Dad! Just listen to me for one minute!” I yelled at him, willing him to listen. But I kept sharing my feelings even if he wasn‘t listening, letting all that anger inside of me out. “You have never been there for me, I have always tried to tell you all these events that have happened in my life, but you have shrugged them off your shoulder like they don’t matter. Like you’re doing now, all you do is text and call all day on you’re phone. You know, sometimes I feel like your job is more important than me, your own daughter!”
I looked into his eyes, actually seeing him listening to every word that I was saying. But I was too much in a rage to pay attention too much, “I’m here Dad! I have always been here, but I have been shrugged off ever since I can remember. And I’m tired of it!”
He set down his phone on the couch, putting up his arms to show me he was listening. “I know Ashley, I know I haven’t always been there, but…”
“No Dad, no buts. I’m 17 now! I have grown up, and without a real father. I…I hate you Dad!” I had said it, I hadn’t really believed it until I had said it, but I realized that I did that night after I had said it out loud.

By this time, tears were streaming down my face, and would not stop. Not even daring to look at him, I ran upstairs and slammed my bedroom door shut behind me. Collapsing on top of my bed, I cried into it, seeing the conversation happening over and over again in my head. And finally after the tears wouldn’t come anymore, I fell asleep, having no idea what the future would bring in store tomorrow.

Then I found out he had died the next morning. “In his sleep,” they said. But I wasn’t entirely sure if they were right. I didn’t go to school for weeks then, unable to face the world with guilt holding me down, confining me to my bed. My mother must have heard what had happened that night from my father, because she was always telling me, “He loved you Ashley, with all his heart.”

Before they closed the casket at his funeral, I looked at my father, sleeping in the soft bed of his, and I knew he loved me. I remember the look in his eyes that night, the one time I had actually seen him listen to me. And now that I think back on it, I swore that I had seen heartache in them. In that one look, I suddenly realized that he really had cared about me. I kissed him on the forehead and whispered into his ear, “I’m sorry Daddy, I regret having said I hate you. I know you had just been doing what was best for me. I love you.” And with my final words, they closed the casket, sealing my guilt along with his body.

A Gift
Something special I wrote for a friend.


A gift

What is a gift?

A gift can be a lot of things

it can be that thing that you've wanted your whole life

it could be that loving hug from your friends and family

it could be a simple smile from that special someone

a quick nod of approval from your parents

everyone paying attention to you and only you

the fact that that day was given to you

spending cherished time with friends

or even getting all the cake and ice cream you want

But what is a gift?

It's different for every person

what they want is in their heart and no one knows what's inside

It is something special...something that you can call yours

and that no one can take away from you

It touches you in ways that nothing else can

and it can change your look on life

But no matter what it is

or who gave it to you

you know that they loved you enough to take that time to think of you

What is a gift you ask?

It's knowing that you're loved.

Jason's Unaverage Day
This is a story I wrote late last night off of a prompt I was given. This isn't finished yet, but I want to see if it's any good before I continue it.

An average boy, in an average family, in an average neighborhood, in an average state, in an average country, was walking to the bus stop to go to school. This average boy's name was Jason. Jason, like I said before, was pretty average. He didn't really play on any of the school teams, or were in any of the clubs. He definitely wasn't one of the popular kids, or a bully, or a nerd, or a rich kid, he was just one of the normal ones that were right in the middle on the school food chain. But being average had it's advantages, he never got beat up because he was never noticed, he could do whatever he wanted without being worried what other people thought about him, well, unless he changed his clothes, then the populars would notice. And he could read.
Jason, was definitely a reader. He didn't like nonfiction books, he liked action and adventure in his, which most of the books in the library were. He wasn't considered a nerd because of his brother. He had a brother that was a senior this year that was the linebacker for the school football team, so everyone knew that Jason was legit.
One day, he was waiting for the bus to come pick him and a few kids up for school early in the morning. Because his family wasn't rich, his brother didn't have his own car, which meant that he got to ride with his football jocks to school. Jason, sadly, wasn't invited to ride with them, so he was stuck riding the bus. So he stood in the sunlight, clutching his book in his right and his breakfast of toast with butter in his left, he waited for the giant yellow deathtrap to arrive.
Hearing voices, he turned his head slightly and saw Marissa and a few of her friends walking toward him. He was shocked for a second, Marissa was the most popular girl singer in their grade. She was so known in all the other grades that she even was currently going out with the quarterback. But why isn't she riding with him to school? Jason thought, taking a bite of his toast and fixing his short brown hair so it stood on ends again. Then figured out why she was riding the bus when he could start overhearing what they were talking about.
"It's okay, I didn't really want to ride with Kerk anyway, he's getting too clingy to me, so it might be time to find another guy," Marissa said, playing with her diamond necklace that was hanging around her neck. She wore a short skirt with a white blouse on top and her curly blonde hair. And as Jason observed more, he couldn't remember a day where Marissa wasn't wearing that necklace. He wondered why she never wore a different one, if she's that rich, couldn't she afford other necklaces as well?
The friend to the right flipped her brown straight hair and put her hand on her hip, "Well, I think it's like not right what your mom is doing. I mean, like who would want to ride with their parents to school?"
Marissa shrugged her shoulders sadly guestering to the group of anxious kids waiting for the bus, "Exactly, now I'm forced to ride a yellow piece of garbage with these...outcasts. It's horrible, I know, but if my mom's trying to spend more time with me, it can't be taking me to school in that old car of hers that she just can't let go." She finished, rolling her eyes that had been covered in mascara. For some reason, she seemed to look perfect every day, which was very benefiting for her since all the guys worshiped the ground she walked on, but all the girls either dispise her or envy her for her looks.
All the children at the bus stopped watched as Marrissa and her friends came and stood at the very front of the line, just as the bus pulled up and squeeked loudly when the brakes were being applied. Jason looked around at the other people, not believing that Marissa, the most popular kid in their entire town was riding on their school bus. While the girls were deciding what seats they wanted to sit in, Jason's friend, Connor, ran up to the bus and quickly got on, sitting next to Jason. "Hey dude," he said in between mouthfuls of oatmeal, "the bus came early today."
Jason guestered to the girls that had chosen the seat only a few in front of their own, "the police probably told the bus to be here right as they came, or he'd get fired."
Connor stood half way up out of his seat, wanting to get a better look at the popular group, at first not believing what Jason was saying. The bus lurched foreward as it started to take them to school, which caused Connor to fall back in his seat with a thud. He turned to Jason and shook his head slowly, "Wow, I never thought it'd come to this. What are they doing on our bus when they wouldn't be caught dead riding it any other day?"
"Got me," Jason replied, shrugging his shoulders, "I just heard them talking and they said something about her mom trying to bond with her and something about her boyfriend being too clingy."
Connor looked over again at the girls, who were now putting on jackets and pulling up the hoods as they approtched the front of the school, "Well, I would be a little clingy too if I had a girl like that." He said with a wink, then pointed out to Jason what they were doing, "Dude, they don't even want to be seen on the bus."
The bus stopped with another lurch again and everyone immedeately stood up, trying to crowd out of the bus as soon as possible. Jason grabbed his backpack and stood up in the isle, slowly moving foreward. As he passed the seat where the girls sat, something shiny caught his eye. When he looked down, there was Marissa's diamon necklace, sitting right in the glare of the sun, not around Marissa's neck. Before anyone could see, he quickly picked it up and shoved it in his pocket, getting off the bus as soon as possible.
He glanced around, ready to run after her and give it back as soon as he spotted her, but he never did. Conner hurried off the bus as well and ran up to where Jason was, "Jeez man, you got off as fast as those girls did," he said, looking around where Jason was. "Hey, what are ya looking for?"
Jason shook his head, seriously thinking that they had evaporated in mid air until he finally spotted them accross the field, Marissa at Kirk's side. Rolling his eyes, he wondered how he was going to return it if she would never be seen with the likes of him in school. Connor saw what he was looking at and patted Jason's shoulder, "Buddy, trust me, you don't want to go down that path. It's the point of no return."
Jason turned back to Conner and took the necklace out, making sure that no one else could see. "No, look, I found this on the seat they were sitting in. I thought that it would have been nice to return it to her, but I'm thinking I might get beat up if I try to approch her with Kirk there." He said, guestering towards the giant quarterback that was currently flexing for Marissa and her friends.
Conner's eyes widened at the sight of the necklace, he glanced up quickly and shoved it back into Jason's jacket pocket, making sure no one else had seen it. "Dude, you are currently the most powerfuly kid in our school. You know Marissa never takes that neclace off, I bet she'd give anything to have it back. You could make a fine negotaion with her." He said, wiggling his eyebrows a bit, already wondering what they could get from her.
Jason smiled but shoved Conner lightly, beginning to walk up the steps into the school. "Yea, then after I asked for a million dollars, she'd probably hire asassins to murder me in my sleep." They approtched his locker while Connor laughed at his comment and there were a few girls standing in front of it. He stood awkwardly in front of them and said, "Um, excuse me, that's my locker. Can I get to it please?"
At first, both girls turned around, disgusted that a nobody like him was asking them to move, then something changed in their expression. The two girls smiled at him and casually moved closer to him, one of them even putting her hand on his shoulder. "Why of course Jason," The one with red hair said, slightly blushing in his presence.
"We wouldn't want to be in the way." The other soothing replied, not letting go of his shoulder and kept moving closer. She wore her hair in a french braid today and was probably a year or two older than Jason, but seemed to suddenly find interest in him. Jason and Connor, both wide eyed, wondered if they were dreaming. Conner even pinched himself just to check.
Umm....okay then," Jason managed to quitely muble, while peeling off the french braid girl. Her and her red haired friend both smiled at him like they had just met their celebrity crush and walked away, giggling and whispering with each other. By then, more people were staring at him like he had just saved the world by walking to his locker, and Jason and Conner were as confused as ever. And to make things even more backwards, Marissa and her boyfriend came walking down the hall, him carrying her backpack on his own back. Usually on a normal day, everyone would move out of the way to let them through, but this wasn't a normal day... Instead, nobody moved and continued to stare at Jason and the scene that had just happened.
At first Marissa wasn't knowing what all the other students were looking at, but then met eyes with Jason and immedeately knew that something was up. When she had first gotten off the bus, she hadn't noticed that her neclace was missing. But when the guys that usually begged to carry her bags, never showed up, she knew that something was wrong. Then, Marissa found out that her necklace was missing. And guessing from what everyone had just seen, he had found it and the affects were already starting to work. Her death glare burnt into Jason, warning him that she'd get her necklace one way or another, and continued down the hall, pushing through all the students blocking her way.

Like I said before, this isn't finished, but I wanted to see everyone's reaction to it. Tell me anything wrong, right, grammer wise, spelling wise, etc. about this story. :)

I like it, but I still don't quite get the plot. Maybe when you write more. =)

That's what I'm trying to debate. If I should write more or not.

I have a habit of saying 'like' a lot. I think it was from Shaggy on Scooby Doo. I was obsessed for the first 10 years of my life. Still am slightly. =D

ME TOO! I'm still obsessed with it! I currently have 2 scooby-doo dvds, maybe 3, two pairs of pj pants with SD on them, and an SD blanket I got from my aunt when I was like 6. ^-^
