message 27: by El (new)

El I also chose the ones that I gave 5/5 this year (I left even a few off here as I think as the year has gone on I no longer feel I would have given 5 stars to something if I re-read it):

1. The Aeneid of Virgil
2. The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue
3. Dvorak in Love by Josef Skvorecky
4. The Balkan Trilogy by Olivian Manning
5. Red Sky at Morning by Richard Bradford
6. Stories of Breece D'J Pancake
7. Ancestral Shadows by Russell Kirk
8. Anabasis by Xenophon
9. Nadja by Andre Breton

12. A Prayer for the Dying by Stewart O'Nan
13. A World Away by Stewart O'Nan
14. Man Who Cried I Am by John A. Williams

I am not finished yet, but know that 2666 by Roberto Bolano will be on the 5-star list also by the time I am done; it likely ranks highest on the list even, as it surpasses everything else I've read this year in both scope and vision.

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hmm, you have 2 of my faves on there, Heather, looks like I have to consider Lace Reader now!

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 117 comments Guernsey and Blindness

message 30: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Amazing when someone has read a book that u have on ur shelves and recommends lol.

Laura Register | 8 comments I just finished rereading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - always a favorite of mine.

Gravediggers Daughter - Joyce Carol Oates

message 32: by Will (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:31AM) (new)

Will Byrnes Limiting it to novels released in 2008, for me it is a tie between The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski and Serena by Ron Rash. Instant classics IMHO.

message 33: by Robin (last edited Dec 07, 2008 04:22AM) (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Hmmm... Would be unfair for me to put hubby's book here - although I feel that way about it. I think I too will have to go with Gursney and I just looked it up on Amazon to see if it qualifies (i.e published in 2008) and it does! It's doing well too look at these rankings...

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #44 in Books (See Bestsellers in Books)
#2 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Historical
#4 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Literary
#4 in Books > Literature & Fiction > United States

Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)

message 34: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments I forgot The Heretic's Daughter. Also, Heather, I really liked The Lace Reader. It's what led me to The Heretic's Daughter, the whole Salem and witches thing. It was interesting to see the modern day Salem in The Lace Reader and the witch hunt day of The Heretic's Daughter.

message 35: by Kristina (last edited Dec 07, 2008 07:17AM) (new)

Kristina (klonk) The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

message 36: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments El, You have The Stolen Child on your best book list; wasn't that a great and intriguing book? I haven't heard anyone else mention it yet, and I thought it was so good!

message 37: by El (new)

El Cindy, I absolutely adored The Stolen Child when I read it earlier this year. It embodies everything I like (in a literary sense) and the characters were so fascinating. I would love more people to read it and talk about it. I didn't know what to expect when I picked it up and I am generally wary of new writers, but I certainly am glad now that I did read it.

message 38: by Allison (new)

Allison i've never heard of the stolen child, but it looks like i'll have to look into it.
i'm heading off to the library in a few minutes- hopefully they'll have it available!

message 39: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments I totally agree El. I may have to 'reread' it as it's been a while and I couldn't remember enough to have a discussion about it. Except I do remember being pleasantly surprised!

message 40: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments It's funny. While I was reading it, I wasn't that crazy about The Life of Pi. After several months, I find myself thinking about it. I like it better now than when I was actually reading it.

I really liked The New Yorkers: A Novel by Cathleen Schine The New Yorkers, C Shine, strange but nice, oddly inconclusive, but it didn't matter.
