Spencer (spencerafreeman) I thought we could use this folder as a place to blow off steam, as the lives of us "young adults," as they like to call us, can actually be quite stressful.

I'm up first to bat:

So I'm applying to grad school for my MA in journalism and the school I'm applying to is my #1 (and only) choice, and extrememly competitive, thus I need to be on top of my game and make my application stand out as much as possible.
Of course there's the GRE test and "tell me about yourself" essay, but I was really banking on a letter of recommendation from my boss at a newspaper I worked at this summber because she is a news editor and pretty much the best person to get to write a letter.
I emailed her over a month ago asking if she could write one for me and she said yes. I told her I needed it by Dec 5- Dec 10th. When I realized there was an extra form that she needed to fill out, I emailed her to let her know. Didn't hear anything. Emailed her 2 more times, reminding her of the upcoming due date. Didn't hear anything. Emailed her again. Didn't hear anything. I emailed her AGAIN today, asking if she would be able to complete it on time, offering to take off work so I can pick it up myself, so she wouldnt have to mail it.
Wouldn't you know she emailed me back (FINALLY) just to say that something came up and that she wouldn't be able to do it. I about screamed! I had waited all this time, banked on the fact that this was the most important thing I could get to help me, only to be told at the last minute that she couldn't do it. Because of her yanking my chain, its too late to find someone else to write one in a timely manner, which leaves me up the creek w/o a paddle.
There is more to the story, but the point is that I feel SO taken advantage of and duped. I am a very nice person, sometimes too nice since I let people take advantage of me. But this showed me that being nice does NOT pay off all the time and that if you want to get something you have to bust asses until you do.
I wrote her a professional yet informative email pointing out to her what she did. I can only hope that this will make her realize the weight of her actions.

Spencer (spencerafreeman) ps- oops, amidst all my ranting, I accidentally put this thread in the wrong folder.
I can't change it bc im not a moderator, so Jamie or Ashley, if you want, can you put this thread under "general" or "college talk" ?

thanks!

message 3: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Aww Anastasia, that's terrible! Things like that have happened to me far too many times because I'm also too nice of a person and people take advantage of that all the time. I'm so sorry you got screwed over like that, but hopefully without the letter of rec you'll still get in! Maybe your email will make her see that she needs to stick to her word and she'll be able to write it for you. Good luck!

That sucks. Think a whole bunch of letters of recommedation from your book club would help? :)

message 5: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I hate it when people say "I know how you feel" so I won't say that.. but I have been in slightly similar situations. That sucks so much!

I am too nice as well, but I still don't see it as a detriment.

I know you're probably worrying right now, but I try and take comfort in the fact that everything happens for a reason!

aww Anastasia! that is horrible! that seriously makes ME so mad and i'm not even you..ughh i feel like that always happens to me too..being too nice..i'm really sorry Anastasia..i hope everything works out..keep us updated!

message 7: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Anastasia that is so not fair to you! I had one similar but it wasn't nearly as big as your situation! I hope you can still get in and like Tami said...maybe a bunch of your goodreads friends can get ya in!

message 8: by Janet (new)

Janet I hope you e-mailing her, Anastasia, the professional e-mail telling her how much she screwed you will help! I can't believe that and I hate when people do that. It is so irritating, even when it's for something that doesn't matter, but this really does matter (a lot) so it makes it all that much worse!!

message 9: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) =( You would think she'd have been reliable! Gah, people are soooooo rude and stupid sometimes.

i have a short rant!

I had to pay $60 to my school library!! How annoying! I returned the books and paid early last week because i needed to before graduation. and then suddenly they send an email out saying that they are having a library grace day..or something like that..where if you return books on that day you won't have to pay your fines!! after i already paid my damn fines!! haha i know its not a big deal..but 60$..?? i should have just kept the dumb books!

message 11: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie ugh! That's so stupid! I kinda did that once.. in HS i thought I'd lost my lit book so I had to go pay for it. Then I found it like the next week and returned it at the end of the year and everything but they never refunded my money!

message 12: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Jamie and Lynn both of those stories suck!

message 13: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) SO I'm super pissed! I not only got pink eye BUT I got my boyfriend's weird cold, so I have a huge headache, my nose is runny, my throat is constantly hurting and I have a fever! Oh and the best part, I have my wonderful time of the month! GRRRR!

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Holy crap, Caiti! That sucks! We'll I hope none of it lasts too long. Hehe. Get well soon!

Ok, so most of you will either roll your eyes, or chuckle, but I have to rant! There is this horrible white stuff falling from the sky! It is Hell in December! I freeze just seeing it. I know I am a big baby, but this is the desert. There isn't supposed to ever be snow in the desert. Thanks for letting me vent.

message 18: by Caiti Casey (last edited Dec 15, 2008 02:37PM) (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Aw that's horrible Tami! I know how that is, other than we expect every year. We sometimes even get it for one day in June. I swear our weather is so bipolar! If this will make you feel any better though it's -8 right now.

message 19: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I would die. The lowest we got last year was 12. I would be a worse hermit than I am right now. I would never leave the house.

message 20: by Janet (new)

Janet Tami where do you live? Colorado broke a record... negative 18 degrees!! Haha woooo hoooo!!! I love winter so much, even if it does get bone chillingly (is that a word?) cold!

message 21: by Janet (new)

Janet I guess I should add that if I hadn't lived in Colorado my whole life and lived somewhere warmer, I would feel the same way Tami! I'm just used to it and love it! :)

message 22: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I live in Utah, so we are neighbors. The thing is everyone because of the Olympics thinks Utah gets snow all the time. I live in the farthest south west corner, and it is desert here. I have lived here or around here my whole life, but so have my siblings and they don't seem to hate the snow as much as I do. I remember when we were all little they would go play in it when we actually got enough to stick. Yuck! I live for our 100+ degree summer days.

I hate the cold weather!! But today was a pleasant surprise..it was like 60..just out of nowhere.. :)

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'll just say it took me 5 minutes to open my damn door on my lunch break today so I could get a sweet tea at mcdonalds across the street. I live in Kentucky, so we get every kind of weather there is.. including the aftermath of hurricanes. I almost busted my ass a few times today, but I guess I am meant to fall tomorrow, not today... but we'll see. I think my bf will be off work tomorrow because he's got a 45 minute drive to work, but ooooh no.. not me. I work about 2 minutes away, right in the city. I will be expected promptly at 8. Haha.

message 25: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie yeah Kentucky has the WEIRDEST and wildest weather! and it changes at the drop of a hat. In the last two years we had a mini-flood, an ice storm, several tornados, an earthquake, and a hurricane (Lauren, I heard that it actually WAS the hurricane - obviously very diminuated - rather than just aftermath like we normally get. Idk if that's 100% true but that's what I heard)

I prefer the cold to hot. So fall and winter make me happy. As long as I have a warm bed to sleep in, I'm good.

message 26: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Ugh, Lynn I'm not sure how you do that. I would rather be hot than cold because it's easy to cool down than heat up!

message 27: by Janet (new)

Janet I think the opposite, Caiti! How funny! I really think it's easier to get warm than it is to get cold. Weird!!
Lynn, I don't know how you put up with that weather. I get worried when tornados are just in my state! Haha. The hurricane thing would scare me too!! AHh! haha :)

message 28: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I love semi chilly weather because I hardly ever get it. I live in Atlanta (where it rarely snows) and it was beginning to actually get coldish (low 40s) then out of nowhere its almost 70 degrees today with humidity and gloominess!
whats going on clouds?!

message 29: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I agree, Janet. It's so much easier to get warmer... always more quilts to pile on the bed! haha. and Cute jackets and scarves to wear. In the summer it is sooo humid and I can't escape it no matter how few clothes I wear. Its like I want to take my skin off! haa.

I absolutely HATE tornados! I'm terrified of them. But we get tornados and tornado scares all the time. At least 5 a year. In Nov 2005 when I was a senior in HS, my county had an F4 tornado which was supposedly the worst of the year in America. It was awful. But praise the Lord, no one was killed. And last year we had an almost tornado that hit my school and messed up some stuff.. but no injuries thankfully. That one was really scary too.

message 30: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) I guess the reason why we don't complain about the heat as much over where I am at is because we have like a maximum of 60% humidity. I forgot about that little factor.

Tornadoes are pretty scary I've had a couple scares too! That would be really really hard to deal with though Lynn, I would probably freak out like a crazy person!

message 31: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
We have no humidity or very very little especially during the summer months, but I love it. When we went to Florida and the Carribean everyone told me how hot I would be miserable with the humidity factor, still wasn't hot enough. I guess I am like a snake. Need sun to be warm. :)

message 32: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie The humidity is the main problem. I was in Santa Fe one summer and I thought it was going to be sooo hot and miserable but it felt wonderful! Like spring-ish! I guess b/c they don't have a lot of humidity out there.

message 33: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Yeah, living in both Atlanta and Miami, the humidity is what always kills me, especially if its muggy and gloomy out (like today). I'd take California/New Mexico weather anyday!

message 34: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
bring on the heat without the humidity for me! :)
i fall in the "i'd rather be hot than cold" camp. i am one miserable person when i'm cold haha. my boyfriend is the exact opposite. needless to say we fight in the car about the temperature all the time. haha

message 35: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Oh Jamie my boyfriend and I do that all the time too. It's actually really funny because he doesn't mind the cold nearly as much as I do like you guys but I almost always refuse to wear a coat and just run around with a hoodie on but insist that the heater is on HIGH! He would rather wear a jacket and keep the heat in the car at normal lighter temperature. Sorry that was my rant for the night.

message 36: by Janet (new)

Janet Haha that's funny Caiti! My boyfriend and I always make fun of his little sister because she is 14 and is too cool to wear a coat. I remember going through that stage, did anyone else?

message 37: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Haha, yes I definitely went through the "too cool for a coat" stage. I was the same way about really any kind of winter outerwear.. boots, hats. I still don't like to wear a hat, but my dislike of the cold usually outweighs that and I give in on the hat. I LOVE boots now though. I learned the hard way on that, I got slight frostbite on my toe so now whenever it gets cold it's painful and turns white.

message 38: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
hahah oh my gosh..i remember when my sister and i went through that stage..i seriously would FREEZE before i'd wear a coat. now..you are lucky if you can get the jacket off me!

message 39: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I definitely thought I was too cool to wear a coat. Haha that's so lame, but it's true. And it's definitely not cool to go coatless in below zero temperatures...but I guess beauty is pain?

message 40: by Janet (new)

Janet So....this isn't really a rant but just going off the cold weather conversation! So it's supposed to be 5 degrees on Sunday!! BRRR!!! And my boyfriend has tickets to the Broncos game, which if San Diego wins their game, it's going to be a HUGE game for us to win. If we win we get into the playoffs! We really want to go...but 5 degrees!? Haha I guess we'll have to see!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
oh my goodness I would die in that weather Janet!! You'll need to get those warmer things that you put in your shoes when you go skiing..basically you will need to be bundled up and not able to move!! Good luck!! Hopefully it will be a little bit warmer than predicted!

message 42: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Our weather has been so freaky this week... The last few days it was so icy that school was cancelled and all that.. yesterday it was kinda melting but still cold... today it's like 60 and all the ice is completely gone. Two days ago it was 30 and you had to be careful of ice. Today feels like how our early springs are.. wet and a tad cool. Our dog is loving it.. he's jumping around, running after thrown deer bones, and playing again just when I thought he might be getting too old for that. This weather feels good but I really do love a White Christmas and we rarely get them.

ps. I like how this thread has turned into the Weather Complaints thread. haha.

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Lynn... did you feel how awesome it was outside!??!? On my lunch break, I sat in my car with the windows down and read. It was great! And now, 5 hours later, its frickin cold!!!

message 44: by Janet (new)

Janet That's the way it's been here too! Crazy warm and then crazy colder than usual! Yay global wamring! Haha j/k. The weather is just a surprise everyday!

message 45: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments ah that stinks SBG.im sorry. i hate failing classes. hopefully you'll get it all worked out.

message 46: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm sorry to here that SBG :( Good luck retaking it. I hate those boring classes!

I'm having an annoying morning. I'm going home to my parents house tonight after work for the holidays, so I've been packing all morning, rushing around trying to get ready. So I left myself about 15 extra minutes to clean off my car after the big snowstorm all weekend (I cleaned it off twice throughout the storm, so it wasn't bad, just some ice). So I get out there and find that my car key is bent, so I had to find my spare. Then I'm realizing that my tires are stuck in ice, so I'm trying to clean off my car and chisel my tires out. There was a creepy guy shoveling off the roof of the building next to where my car was parked who kept talking to me telling me how to do it better and asking about my boyfriend and whatnot. He did let me borrow his icepick, so that was nice of him, but still, he was a CREEP. When I finally got my car unstuck, my windshield wipers wouldn't work, so I could not see anything on my drive. I ended up being a half hour late for work and there was no parking. I really really hate winter!

Ahh, I feel a little better after venting.

message 47: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Heather, you need to get some pepperspray! I would have already sprayed him though! Hehe.

message 48: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) That sucks SBG, hopefully it will go better next semester.

Heather I hate creepers! And winter does suck!
