Gena Showalter Fans discussion

I've been looking for other series to get into so I started this thread in the hopes seeing what others enjoy might lead me to something new. I'm a PR noob compared to most other readers I think.

Here's my list. Perhaps it will change (although that would be a tough sell. I'm a huge fan of LotU. It would take a LOT to make that change).

What:

1. Lords of the Underworld (by far my fave)
2. Immortals after Dark (very close 2nd)
3. Demonica

Why:

1. LotU: Tons of sexy Lords and even supporting characters like the Angels (raise you're hands if you're a fan of Zacharel. *grin*). Also I love the backstory for LotU. I'm a big Epic Fantasy fan and Gena seems to have a good handle on giving interesting story plots and situations to go right alongside the fun romance.

2. IaD: What can I say about IaD except what's not to love? I love all the whacky characters (Luv Luv Luv Nucking Futs Nix). Ditto above about the fascinating backstory that surrounds the characters (the War that comes around every few centuries that heavily winnows out the Immortal populations).

3. Demonica: This has to have one of the oddest settings for any book I've read (I'm a big fantasy, SF and horror reader). Don't recall too many books set in a hospital and certainly not one staffed by demons. Good characterization. I liked the later books more than the first one. First one was the weakest imo. They progressively got better as the story moved along. Hoping to start Ione's Riders series soon.



Commentary on Also-Rans

I've read several of the Dark-Hunter books and while they are good for some reason the whole series has failed to really grab me the way the 3 listed above have. Ditto with Nalini Singh's Psy-Changling series. Just haven't been able to 'get into' them for some reason even though I do concede they are well written.

I did like J.D. Ward's first Black Dagger Brotherhood book but haven't had the chance to read the rest of the series. The wait list at the library has like 25+ people ahead of me to check it out.

However I liked the first BDB book enough (unlike the other 2 above) that I might eventually have a new Fave PR Series to add to my listing above.


Please tell me what your faves are and why. Make it as long or short as you like cause I'm interested in finding new authors/stories/characters, etc to get into.

You should try PC Cast's goddess summoning series. I believe the goddess of the sea is first, but the series gets progressively better as it goes along. You also don't HAVE to read them in order but I did because she does mention a few of the same characters in different books. She also does an amazing job with her parthanon series and house of night. P.C. is one of my favorite authors!
I also really liked the mysteria series that is by PC Cast and Gena Showalter along with two others...it is four short stories and very fun.

Gee wiz...how can i pick just ONE series out of all the awesome ones out there? I can't rank them, its just impossible I think. But here are my current favs (in no particular order).

Out of curiousity, have you checked out Gena's other series? I've been wanting to, but want to catch up on LotU first.

I love the Goddess summoning books, Lotu also love, havent read the mysteria series whats it about??

I've read Gena's Atlantis Series... I liked it but not as much as LOTU. Read book 1 of Alien Huntress Series and didn't care for it.

Hamsterdance, have you read Christine Feehan's Dark Series?

It's hard to pick a few good series but IAD & LOTU are amongst my fav's.

I really enjoy Jeaninne Frost's Night Huntress Series

Feehan's Dark series and Kenyon's Dark Hunters series were actually the two series that got me addicted to PNR in the first place. It seems that I've found other series I enjoy more now though.

It is basically 4 short stories in one book (there are three out now- Mysteria, Mysteria lane, and Mysteria Nights. There are four authors: Candy Cox, Susan Grant, PC Cast, & Gena Showalter. In each book they write a short story about the 'strange-goings-on' in a little town in Colorado called Mysteria. It is super fun there is everything from Vampires and Faeries to Demons and Ghosts.

Oh I forgot about Gena's tales of an extraordinary girl I really liked those...not as much as LotU but still really nicely done!

Gena Showalter - Love Lords of the Underworld and probably going to add Wicked Nights to the list

J.R. Ward - BDB By far, my favorite and Fallen Angels too

Sherrily Kenyon - Dark Hunters - awesome

Kelley Armstrong - Although not sure if she falls under PRN

Nalini Singh - Psy-Changling - currently reading and keeping me up at night. Always a good sign.

Fayth Devlin - Blood Lust Rising Trilogy - love

Lara Adrian - Midnight Breed

Kresley Cole - IAD - Nucking Futs Nix, 'nuff said

I don’t know if I’m alone in this but I LOVE Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series. It takes a while for the romance to really develop but I think it’s worth it :D

I love the KD series as well. Such an amazing world and da Hotness!!!

Karen Moning - Fever Series - Jericho Barrons (nothing more can be said)

Gena Showalter- LOTU & AOD, I can't get enough of these guys

Kresley Cole - IAD, I love the Valkyrie those girls ROCK!

Sherrilyn Kenyon - Dark Hunters (though the books in this series are a little to predictable, they got better when the dream hunters were more involved, and the back story became thick with tons of mythology)

I strongly suggest the Demonica or Lords of Deliverance series, they are both great series and offer up plenty of good humor,action, and romance. I would also suggest the Night Huntress series and the spin-offs following it, if you're are looking for great reads that are, again packed with humor, action, and romance!!

I enjoy many of the series mentioned, most especially Cole's IAD and Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter series. Here are a few others not previously mentioned:

1. Shannon K. Butcher's Sentinel Wars series. (She's Jim Butcher's wife by the way!)
2. Jennifer Ashley's Shifters Unbound
3. Alexandra Ivy's Guardians of Eternity
4. Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker series

I agree that the Demonica series is amazing but I quit reading the LoD.

I think I'll give some of the series mentioned a try. I already started with the Guild Hunter series.

I think the Guild Hunters series is great too! Nalini has a way with describing scents that the characters have in the book and it is so intriguing to me how she does that. She is also masterful at creating a love scene and causing the build up of it to be so pressing YOUR heart will be beating quick for the moment to happen already!! Or maybe that's just me;-)LOL!!!

So far I've only read the first short story, Angel's Pawn. It was good as an introduction into her world. I like her take on angels and vampires.

Sarah, Angel's Pawn is pretty good but the full-length books are way better. I think you are going to like Raphael and Elena and the Seven.

My new obsession is Heather Killough-Walden. I love her Kings series and Im currently reading The Chosen Soul series. I'm also about to read her Vampire, vampire which i heard is quite good too.

OOOO!! Thanks for talking about Nalini's Guild Hunter series, I am on the 4th and final book in the "Royal House of Shadows" series. I have never read any of Nalini's books before but her's is the best in this series and I think I will have to try her Guild Hunter series now.

Lynn I totally agree with you on Nalini's book being the best in the series. She is an amazing author so I strongly suggest you give her Guild Hunter's series a chance! Nothing like a bunch of sexy lethal angels and vampires:-)!!!

I love Nalini's book in the Royal House of Shadow's series. It truly was the best in the series. Definitely read the Guild Hunter series. It's good stuff.

Oh, definitely, Nalini's book was the best of that series. I loved Micah and Lily.

The style of that book though is really quite different than the Guild Hunter series. Royal House of Shadows was more Harlequin if you know what I mean. Guild Hunter is much darker, grittier, a very complex and intricate world. Really excellent.

And, if you like Guild Hunter, then you should really try her Psy-Changeling series which is more traditional romance. It's probably my favorite PNR series going right now.

My first love is the BDB series by J.R. Ward, the rest fall in no particular order.

Oh now I'm even more excited to check out the Guild Hunter series as I'd rather have more adventure than "Harlequin"

Lynn, also try her Psy-Changeling series. It is more romance than Guild Hunter, with a HEA at the end of each. Singh really excels with plot, story arc and working with a constantly increasing cast of characters. It all holds together so well and some of her couples are my favorites in all of PNR.

I love Jim too. I can't wait until Rapture comes out. Maybe it's time for a re-read? LOL!

My favorites in no particular order are: Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld, and Sherrilynn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series.

Shirley I think I finished Rapture in one long sitting once it came out and I got it! It was such a great book I really couldnt put it down, but then I didnt expect anything less! I fell in love with Matthais-didnt have a choice! He proved to be a great hero in the end. "SIGH" on romance HEA's!!!;-)

I have a tie right now between Larissa iones rouge riders and Rebecca Zanetti dark protectors is anyone else into the Dark protectors I love me some Talen mmmmmmmmm

JR Ward is my favorite without a doubt. I love Gena but there are certain thinks in her books that get on my nerves.

I really enjoy Ward's sex scenes. They feel very genuine and varied. Also, the male characters seem very MALE to me, not like men written by a female, even though they are.

Kresley Cole's IAD, Nalini Singh's both Phy-Changeling and Guild Hunter, Dark-Hunter, Feehan's Carpathian Series (although the last book was not good), Jeanniene Frost's Night Huntress (is it PNR or Urban), Demonica, Edge, LOTU, & BDB

Lords of the underworld

Gena Sbowalter (Lord of the Underworld) because I love that even though some.of the mates are annoying the women have parts in the storyline other than being mates. They are useful.

Rebecca Zanetti (The Dark Protector Series) these books are amazing

Mandy I read the first 3 of the order of the blade and loved them. Is the rest of the series good?

BDB, IAD, lords of the underworld, dark hunters, touched series by nancy straight...HP mallories books are pretty good too

I haven't read the BDB series, I feel like I'm missing out.
