I think the writer used him for his magic had Mercer trumple over his heart, the kills him, I would've rather it been Finley in that hole instead of Cal, then she traps his soul on that island gardening for eternity, with Elodie as company. it's appaling.

I was so sad when I read the part where he died, I wanted Sophie to choose Cal.
PLEASE edit the title of this thread. It has ruined the book for a lot of people who haven't had the chance to read it yet.
i liked Cal and i was very upset he was used. i felt bad for him and was sad he died but he wasnt the one for Sophie. Archer was and i loved Archer. I didnt mind that Cal died i was sad but i got over it quickly. He loved it there at hecate hall and i dont like elodie but i dont hate her. She cant be that bad so i didnt mind how this book turned out...i actually liked it
I havent read the book yet but if I see a huge sine saying spoiler alert ur an idiot to think I won't read it along with half the people on good reads!!! Killing cal was totally unnessisary and I cried when u first read that he died, it's nice to put him in a garden if u kill him off but with Elodie?! That is cruel and desturbing! I wish Any author dealing with a love triangle could clean it up nicer. Introduce a new love interest for one of the people in the triangle, or maybe the guy ( or girl) just needs to deal with the fact that they have been friendzoned, seriously is that to hard?
I thought cal was pretty awesome ("I owe that guy, like, a mountain of burgers. it's getting embarrassing.") i was sad he died, but not devastated. archer is truly the one for sophie.
His death was completely unnecessary. It felt rushed and almost as if Rachel was just tired of writing the book towards the end and didn't feel like dealing with the love triangle. Although she kind of did take care of the love triangle when she had Cal confess that he loved Sophie, but understood that she wasn't in love with him. Bam problem solved. No need to go finish the guy off. Plus there was no real mourning period for the poor guy. One paragraph your reading that he was dead (which if you blinked and kept reading you would have missed it.) The next Sophie is waking up and every thing is all happily ever after. What a cop out. :-)
I think killing Cal was good for the plot. Another unexpected twist. I was heartbroken to see him go but it was good for the story line , can't lie

Did you seriously just put such a huge spoiler as a thread title?!?! Couldn't you put "Was it necessary? (SPOILER ALERT)"? You just ruined the book for me! Some people don't like this, ok?
WHOA WHOA WHAO!!!! CAL IS FREAKIN DEAD??? When did this book come out!
Just finished this book a few hours ago.
Although I thought Sophie and Archer were good together, I really liked Cal as a character.
Killing him was unnecessary.
Plus, like Audrey said he told Sophie to be with Archer because he could see Archer's love for her.
I hate when authors kill off a character part of a love triangle. It's like they're taking the easy way out.

WHAT?!?!?! SHE KILLS CAL!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even want to read this now!!!!!!!
I think she killed Cal off so that he would be out of thew question because of the whole arranged marriage thing, but even so he was going to let Sophie go.
i didn't think it was neccessary. i was actually really surprised that he died and totally didn't see it coming. Cal does love that island so i guess he was in, a way... probably, happy that he was stuck to the island. But still i think it would have been better if he had lived.
I think what Cal did in the end proved how much he loved Sophie. He sacrificed himself for her. And he seemed so calm about it, like of course he would risk everything to save her.
We didn't see Archer going in to get her. I was very Team Cal. Ugh.
