Why did Kisten have to die?

I am on WWBC right now, so no one spoil it if it tells me later, but does it say at all why he had to die? I know I herd from somewhere that he HAD to die and was just wondering if there was any real reason or if he just had to, like in other books

When I read his death, my reaction was that she killed him of because he was too easy. It was all hearts and flowers with very little drama and conflict. He offered Rachel happiness and, to paraphrase Bilbo Baggins, happy is boring.

I don't think the series ever really explained why Kirsten had to die, but it take a few books to find out who killed him. The scenes with Rachel at the boat were heart wrenching. I really liked the changes in Rachel when she finally got together with him. Kind of wished they'd been together longer.
I kind of like how she works with Trent, but wish they'd either get together or stop with the maybes.

I've read through Perfect Blood.

yeah it was too soon for rachel to settle down. though kisten was a good match and i miss him ( in my head he looks like spike from buffy/angel) in the books i am curious where shes goning to go next after marshal.

I felt the same way when I read the book. I was devastated by Kisten's death. I haven't read Kim Harrison's latest book, but I am anxious to see if Rachel finally finds happiness.

I hated that Kisten died. I mean; dying is one thing, but since he was a vampire that means even his soul is lost, and I will never find it in my heart to forgive Kim Harrison for that. Unless some demon magic can bring his soul back somehow in the last installment...

I'm hoping no one who hasn't read the books before this one finds this thread. Can you say spoiler alert?

As to why he had to die, can not have a character ever get too happy or comfortable.

Kisten's death was sad, it's true, but in the long run, he and Rachel couldn't have lasted. It's been pretty clear from the beginning that Rachel is the kind of gal who respects STRENGTH the most in her love interests. Kisten was a submissive -- she would have grown irritated then tired of him not wearing the pants in their relationship.

Same with Ivy, IMHO... She acts all tough and ominous on the outside, but when it comes down to it, she's pretty damned needy and will always submit to a stronger personality. Rachel needs an equal in her strength (emotional, physical, magical), and the more powerful she becomes through the series, the more powerful her eventual life partner must be.

I think a main character had to die in the series, it's as simple as that. They couldn't really kill off Jenks or Ivy (though that could still happen later on, I have no idea as this is the last book I read)
As soon as Kisten and Rachel fell in love I knew he'd die. I think they needed a little heart brake, they couldn't have the relationship fizzle out, because that would be boring. Kisten wasn't a div like Nik so he wouldn't brake her heart and he'd always still be around because of his relatonship with Ivy, so basically this way someone else can move in.. There will be a new romance to come!

I too, heard Kim Harrison say that it was too early for Rachel to "be happy", without the challenges the men (and women) create, some of them not so subtle, she can't become who she must become throughout the series.

But I also heard her on a live radio/chat say that she doesn't "control" the story in a calculete way and that she was as surprised as we all were about the death, and she mourned it, is still mourning, as well. I loved hearing that, that the story unfolds for her too, that she listens to her characters and that they take on a life of their own outside of the story.

I can't be the only one holding out, that he will somehow reappear?

Kisten didn't deserve to die....I miss him too....I am in book 7 now...great series!!!!

I cried when he died and then i cried some more in black witch white curse when we found out how he died and who killed him... -I Didn't meant to make you cry. I love you Rachel. :'C

One of my fav all time series...really liked Kisten as well (for some reason picture the Eric character from TruBlood...or something like that look), but at the same time....as hard as it was for me to read that he had died the "true death", ugh, I like how Rachel's relationships shift and it's not a "happy ever after" yet but more how relationships come and go in your life. I was really surprised that the "rat" guy..sorry, can't remember his name...turned out to be "different" than originally thought. I don't want to give away spoilers and it's been a while, so can't remember when that was in the series. But...I like how she and the characters and her relationships "evolve". Haven't read Perfect Blood yet...can't wait...I'm waiting cause I like to savour that I get to read it. haha

Karen This book is the beginning to the end of the series. 12 to 13 books and no more Kim said.

Maybe it also has something to do with giving Ivy hope that at the end she might still have her soul or something.

Because if otherwise how can Rachel have a new boyfriend?

I had just finally started to read his name is Kisten instead of Kristen and she goes and kills him off! *le sigh* He was good times.

I miss Kisten too. I felt he was good for Rachel, but she was probably right about it being to early in the series for her to settle down.... and I do wish something would happen with Trent. But Kisten was like a breath of fresh air.. he was fun. Couldn't they just have broken up and yeah somebody else(nick) could of died.
I am currently reading A Perfect Blood, but have been told is sort of like a bridging book. I am enjoying it thoroughly however Rachel still misses Kisten, I feel bad for her :(

Yes, this ordeal started all the way back to a short story about Ivy and Kisten, Rachel was not even in this story and Ivy worked under A vamp named Art... Well this short story is about 105 pages long and found in the book 'DATES FROM HELL' Get it and read it, I read this story last, and was so sorry I had not found the story before reading The entire Hollows series... But this story NAMED: UNDEAD IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL is the beginning of the end of Kisten. You can read this story and it will not ruin the other books for you but if you read this first and then read the hollows in the order they came out you will plainly see what happened.. Because the mystery is strung out over several books before you really find out who, where and why Kisten was killed. I really miss his character and when I heart Kim Harrison say she was sort of sorry she killed him off it made me feel better. It also made me feel like I really wish she had not allowed him to be killed. Knock of Nick instead LOL... BUT .. Do read this story before going on since it will take what is it 2-3 books to find the final answers.. in the end.. Enjoy... And visit Kims web site she has video taped question and answer sessions from her signings that answer a lot of questions too.. Oh do sign the facebook wall and beg Kim not to stop the hollows series at book 12 or 13, since that is right around the corner!!! two more books and that is it, NO MORE RACHEL OR HOLLOWS!! So please go to facebook and ask Kim to write more than the planned 12 or 13 books, next book is 11 so that is coming fast. Please do this show her we love her writing...petition for more hollows on facebook/kim harrison.. We are asking every body to beg kim not to end the HOLLOWS SERIES.. Thanks.

Sara Cooper gotta say I was glad to read that later on Nic got to slave away; he was a cocky s.o.b. and deserved some time in never never.

I went to signing by Kim Harrison and her answer was that it was that it was too soon in the series for Rachel to find true love and settle down. I'm all caught up on the series and still miss Kisten. :(
