JackieB | 123 comments How about something by Barbara Pym? her best book is supposed to be Excellent Women, but I'm not sure if it's set in a village. Crampton Hodnet sounds like it would be though.

Edited to add: I thought of her because I read Some Tame Gazelle, which was set in a village and was all about two spinster sisters. One expended all her maternal instincts on the various curates who came to the village. The other had an unrequited passion for the vicar. It sounds drippy, but was very funny as she laid bare the various characters' foibles (although she wasn't mean in the way she did it). It was full of having tea with the vicar, baking for fetes and other villagy things. I know she's written other books set in villages, so I think she's worth considering.
