District Twelve's industry is coal mining. The citizens here, both male and female, start work at age eighteen. This leads to to a serious disadvantage during the Hunger Games (if Katniss Everdeen is anyone to go by), as coal miners learn their trade too late in their life for them to be of use. Most tributes from this district will be poor, generally underfed and unready to enter the Hunger Games. Here, it is regarded as a death sentence. It is said that there are woods outside of District 12, so some tributes may know how to hunt or be familiar with nature--but if I see every tribute being a hunter, I'll have to revoke the privilege of sneaking out into the woods entirely.
