James stood by the reception desk, filling out a form.
Dr.Everheart came down the hall and stopped at the nurses station waiting for her new patient.
"Hey, Dr.Everheart." James greeted her, "Who are you waiting for?"
"No one in particular what are you doing?"she said looking at the papers James has in his hands.
"Writing up a..." James trailed off. What had he been writing?
She stared at James with a smile,"You forgot didn't you?"
James laughed, "Yeah. Mind telling me what they are?"
She smiled and looked the parer"It's a.....uhh.." she looked up from the paper without a smile "A death confirmation form."
"Oh, right.." James remembered the patient now. It had been a 9 year old boy.
"Who was the doctor?Doctors always feel horrible after losing a young patient might as well say something to them."
"OK...how are you doing?" she said knowing that losing a child patient is the hardest.
His stomach felt queasy, "Not well."
She patted his shoulder,"It'll be OK."
Dr. Beal could barely make out James and Dr. Everheart's conversation from her hiding spot deep within the supply closet. She had just lost a little boy, and- while it actually was not her fault this time- it had nearly broken her. She couldn't face anyone until she regained her composure.
"Yeah..I suppose you're right." He said looking down at the form.
((ha ha can't stop laughing!!))
Dr. Beal knew that Dr. Everheart already had doubts about her coworker, so she couldn't stand to face her and the possible accusations. James, at least (hopefully) knew that Dr. Beal had done all she could...Dr. Beal stood from her crouch and went to put her ear to the door so she could hear her coworkers' conversation.
"Dr. Beal did all she could, I'm sure." James said, turning to Dr. Everheart.
"I know. When it comes to children she works the hardest she just to save that child....but you can't save them all.."
Dr. Beal heaved a sigh of relief at James and Dr. Everheart's words. Unfortunately, now she was worried about them seeing her coming out of the closet. She looked around and found some post-it pads and filled her hands with them. She took and deep breath and quietly crept out of the closet, hoping that they wouldn't see her.
"Well might as well go in search of Dr.Beal."
"She's right there." James said. He had turned around and had spotted her.
Dr.Everheart turned and saw Dr.Beal and thought to herself Poor thing. She must really feel horrible about this.....what's with the sticky notes?
Dr. Beal briefly met James' eyes, then she looked at the floor as she told her lie: "I was just getting some sticky notes...I, uh, needed some." She still couldn't look at Dr. Everheart.
James nodded, smiling sweetly at her.
She smiled and understood and walked toward Dr.Beal
Dr. Beal forced herself to look up at Dr. Everheart as she approached. She cursed inwardly as she felt her chin begin to crumple.
Dr.Everheart walked toward her and put a hand on her shoulder,"It's OK you did everything you can.Don't put yourself down."
Dr. Beal blinked back the tears so that she could meet Dr. Everheart's dark brown ((right?)) eyes. Her heart lifted at the honest, heartfelt expression on the young doctor's face. She really means it. "Thank you, Dr. Everheart," she said earnestly.
She smiled,"NOW!Let go get coffee cuz I have been awake for awhile and I am tired!"
