Sounds similar to the Dancing Girls of Lahore by Louise Brown

I bought the Dancing Girl's of Lahore when I was in NY. I got into a cab at the bookstore and the Pakistani driver saw the book. He was none too pleased. Fascinating read, nonetheless.

That was a great book. Very touching.
